HELLA PAGID MAKES SAFETY

Parts and systems for active braking safetyWe have been making a vital contribution to improving safety on our streets for many decades. Today, HELLA PAGID is an internationally renowned partner to the automotive industry and also one of the leading brake system suppliers in the independent aftermarket. One of the principles of our company policy is the reconciliation of expectation with

reality. Our research and development therefore focuses on Germany and we

manufacture only at high-performance production plants (located for example in

Germany, France and England, etc.) in accordance with German specifications.

Another aspect that underpins our success is and will always be the nurturing of

partnerships with our customers based on a fair-minded responsible approach. We want

to draw attention to this specific aspect once again in this brochure for the following

reason: Economic success in the garage and aftermarket sector is partly

determined by correct storage of products!

Of course it goes without saying that we cannot guarantee the shelf life and storage durability of

HELLA PAGID products because we cannot influence the on-site storage conditions in each case. It is

therefore worth observing our recommendations on the following pages.

Also bear in mind that the shelf life of small packages is often shorter than larger ones. One more

thing: Always use the oldest stock first (FIFO principle).

OUT OF STOCK? OUT OF DATE? AVOIDABLE!

Storage of fluids and chemicalsA satisfactory answer to the question of economically-sound inventory management can only be found for the aftermarket and garage sector by taking the fundamental criteria into account in the requirements planning, in addition to the empirical values in each individual case.Of course it goes without saying that the purpose of storage and stockpiling is to be

prepared for all eventualities at all times. However, it is also important to store goods

under the optimum conditions whenever possible to maximize safety and avoid wastage.

HELLA PAGID therefore recommends the following storage conditions:

"'7 Store in enclosed dry rooms

"'7 Avoid direct sunlight

"'7 Store in sealed original container

"'7 Store on level pallets/shelves

"'7 Protect from impacts/overloading

"'7 Protect against extremes of temperature and air humidity

Also observe the specifications in the relevant safety data sheets. Note that

additional regulations that must also be taken into consideration may exist. All

applicable national, international and local regulations and specifications must be

observed. In addition, also observe the special characteristics of the individual product

groups in the area of fluids and chemicals as follows.

Storage of brake and clutch fluidsThe recommended maximum storage period depends on the climate at the respective storage location:

Moderate climate:"'7 Max. temperature 20°C and relative

humidity 75%Max. storage period 18 months

Tropical climate:"'7 Max. temperature 35°C and relative humidity

90% Max. storage period 12 months

Storage of brake cleanerAs HELLA PAGID brake cleaner is sold in compressed gas packages, the following storage conditions are recommended:"'7 Keep containers tightly sealed. Keep

containers in a cool well ventilated location.

"'7 Keep away from heat / sparks / open flames / hot surfaces.

"'7 Protect from sunlight and temperatures higher than 50 °C. Heating leads to increased pressure and a risk of bursting.

"'7 Even after use, do not force open or

burn. "'7 Equip storage rooms with solvent-

resistantsealed floors.

Also observe the local regulations concerning the storage of compressed gas packages.Recommended storage temperature: 20°C Storage period: max. 18 months

Storage of metal-free permanent lubricant Recommended storage temperature: 10°C – 20°C Storage period: max. 24 months

CORROSION PROTECTION VIA CONTROLLED CLIMATE

Storage of consumable goodsHELLA PAGID recommends you store consumable goods such as brake pads, brake

shoes, brake discs and brake drums under the following conditions:

"'7 Store in enclosed dry rooms

"'7 Avoid direct sunlight

"'7 Store in sealed original packaging

"'7 Store on level pallets/shelves

"'7 Protect from impacts/overloading

"'7 Protect from temperature extremes and air humidity

The main factors that affect the shelf life of the named products are internal and

external corrosion (rust). The products named should be stored in rooms where the

European climatic conditions (-10°C to 30°C) are not exceeded/undercut. A visual

inspection of the products is recommended every 3-5 years.

In addition, the special characteristics of individual product groups in the area of

consumable goods must be observed as follows.

Storage of brake shoes and brake pads:

All friction materials should be inspected after the specified time period for any signs of serious corrosion. If corrosion is not found, they can be stored for another 3-5 years. A further visual inspection is then due.Minor corrosion on the surface of the pad is not critical and normally disappears during the initial braking operations following installation of the pads or shoes.

If a brake pad or brake shoe is so heavily corroded that the specified dimensions can no longer be complied with, the product is no longer suitable for installation and must be disposed of accordingly.

Storage of brake discs and drums

Coated brake discs by HELLA PAGID are permanently protected against corrosion by a special treatment. A film of oil is applied to uncoated brake discs and drums and they are then packaged infoil which affords the greatest possible corrosion protection up to the point of installation. However, a visual inspection should still be performed every3-5 years. Minor corrosion on the running surface is not critical and is removed during the initial braking operations following installation. If, on the other hand, there is corrosion on the wheel hubs or wheel contact surfaces, the disc must be thrown away.

THEY LAST LONGER IF THEY ARE STORED IN A COOL PLACE

Storage of rubber partsRubber is generally considered to be a versatile, elastic and relatively hard-wearing material. It is therefore no surprise that state-of-the-art braking technology also makes use of these positive characteristics.Under adverse conditions however, rubber also cannot be stored indefinitely. HELLA

PAGID therefore recommends that rubber parts, such as brake and clutch hoses,

brake master cylinders and wheel brake cylinders, are stored under the following

conditions.

Brake hoses

Storage conditions:

"'7 Storage in cool, dry, low-dust moderately- ventilated rooms

"'7 Storage outdoors is not permitted, even when protected against the weather

"'7 Storage not below -10°C and not above 35°C

"'7 Rubber and natural rubber products must be shielded from heat sources in heated storage rooms

"'7 Avoid direct sunlight

"'7 Protect against intense artificial light with high ultraviolet content

"'7 As ozone is particularly harmful, storage rooms must not contain any ozone-producing equipment whatsoever, e.g. electric motors or other equipment that could generate sparks or other forms of electrical discharge

"'7 Store in sealed original packaging

"'7 Make sure that rubber parts are stored free of stress, i.e. without tension, compression or other deformation, as stress creates the ideal conditions for permanent deformation and cracking.

Storage time and shelf life:

The storage time of rubber parts is between 2 and 15 years, depending on the application. For relevant information, please refer to ISO2230 (see table). As the allocation to a material group cannot be guaranteed in every case, HELLA PAGIDrecommends you inspect rubber parts for the first time following an initial storage period of five years. The storage period can then be extended by two years. The storage period can only be extended by the maximum amount if the optimum storageconditions exist and if the parts have been inspected accordingly.

Recommended storage temperature: 25°C
