This date commemorates the end of the great siege of 1565, the end of the French occupation in Malta and co-incidentally enough the armistice of the Fascist regime in Italy in 1943. The Maltese archipelago consists of three main islands – Gozo, Comino and Malta – and several small islets. Millions of years ago, the Maltese Islands were the elevated part of a mass of land extending southwards from nearby Sicily. This continental shelf was submerged when the sea level rose during the inter-glacial period, leaving the land tips exposed in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.The islands are situated in the heart of the Mediterranean, between Europe and Africa. Control of Malta meant control of the Mediterranean and Malta was an ideal stepping stone from one continent to the other. It is therefore no wonder that conquerors down the ages have left their mark on the islands: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, the Knights of St John, the French and the British, who held the islands until 1964, when Malta finally became independent. Climate: Malta enjoys a Mediterranean climate with very mild winters and very hot summers. Temperatures in summer can go up to 40°C and more and the winters are very mild. The total annual rainfall, which occurs mainly between October and February, averages around 500 mm.

GeographyThe Maltese archipelago consists of three inhabited islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino, and two other uninhabited islands. They lie in the middle of the Mediterranean, with Malta 93km south of Sicily and 230km north of North Africa. Phönizier, Karthager, Römer, Araber, Normannen, die Ritter des Johanniter Ordens mit ihren spanischen, französischen und deutschen Fürstenhäusern sind alle auf der Insel vertreten gewesen. Schliesslich nach 150 Jahren als englische Kolonie wurde Malta 1964 selbständig. Klima; Malta genießt ein mediterranes Klima mit sehr milden Wintern und sehr heißen

XVIIème siècle Meublée en style d’époque.Chambre de guerre de Lascaris: Ce sont les bureaux de commandement de la RAF (Royale Air Force) où, lors de la seconde guerre mondiale, toutes les opérations contre l’Allemagne et l’Italie se planifiaient.La bibliothèque nationale: Elle abrite aujourd’hui les archives de l’Ordre des Chevaliers de St Jean de Jérusalem, de Rhodes et de Malte, dit «Ordre de Malte », et celle de l’Université.Le Centre Mediterraneen de Conference Construit par les Chevaliers à l’origine pour être un hôpital, c’est devenu en 1979 un centre de conférences.Le Centre du Chevalier de Saint James Aujourd’hui ensemble d’ateliers de création artistique, il fut également construit par les Chevaliers. Es una casa privada del siglo XVII decorada con exquisitos muebles antiguos.Lascaris War Rooms (Salas de operaciones militares): Son las originales salas de control de combate desde las cuales se han planeado e iniciado todas las operacionescontra los alemanes y los italianos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La Biblioteca Nacional alberga todos los archivos de la Orden de St. John comotambién los archivos de la Universita.Centro de Conferencias del Mediterráneo Fue originalmente un hospital construido por los caballeros. En 1979 fue convertido en un centro de conferencias. El Centro para la Creatividad St. James Cavalier fue construido originalmente por los caballeros como torre de defensa elevada a la entrada de Valletta.Los Albergues Estos edificios señoriales pertenecen a los diferentes lenguajes que formaron parte de la orden. L’edificio dietro al cancello interno, ex residenza del governatore inglese, è attualmente, la residenza ufficiale del Presidente di Malta. Il giardino principale, con le sue piante esotiche, fu aperto al pubblico nel 188.

Birgu, Bormla, l-lsla: Ces trois villes ceintes au cœur des lignes de fortification Cottonera sont également connues respectivement sous le nom de Vittoriosa, Senglea et Cospicua. VIcTORIA: (RABAT)This is Gozo’s commercial and cultural Capital. It is a reference point for anyone who wants to explore Gozo, whether on foot or by car.

The Citadel, Victoria (Rabat)The Citadel is the fortified and upper most part of Victoria this enclosed fortified part of the town boasts of a cathedral, the Gozo Law courts, the old Bishop’s Palace and a small number of museums displaying various Gozo related exhibits. Only a handful of residents live in the Citadel. From the ramparts one may enjoy a 360o panormaic view of the island

Archaeology Museum: Casa Bondi, The Citadel. The museum houses archaeological artefacts from Gozo, amongst which the two famous Neolithic statueues found at Xaghra Circle ill 1986.

Cathedral and Museum: The Citadel. The present cathedral was constructed between 1697 and 1711. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. A major highlight is the trompe I’oeil dome inside the church.

Xwejni Bay: This creek is one of those hid-den charms of Gozo with coral line cliffs. It can be reached via a stretch of salt pans which are still harvested regularly.

The Ciudadela, Victoria: (Rabat)La Ciudadela (the Citadel) es la parte fortificada de la ciudad de Victoria y la más alta. The Blue Lagoon: Die Blaue Lagune – der silberne Sandboden lässt das Meer hier wie ein türkis schillerndes Naturschwimmbecken erscheinen.

Dwejra Bay: Eine malerische, ausgefallene Küstenlandschaft mit interes santen geologischen Formati onen wie z.B. dem von Klippen umgebenen und

durch eine Kluft mit dem offenen Meer verbundenen Inland Sea und dem Azure Window, einer Felsformation, die über mehrere Jahrhunderte durch die Wellen aus den Klippen geformt wurde. Unweit der felsigen Küste ragt der Fungus Rock, Ġebla tal Ġeneral, aus dem Meer.

Ħondoq ir-Rummien: Einer der ruhigen Strände Gozos, der durch seine relativ abgeschiedene Lage besticht.

Marsalforn: Dieser Badeort hat sowohl einen Sandstrand als auch eine interessante Felsküste mit histo rischen Salzpfannen. Die Bucht ist wegen ihrer Promenade auch bei den Gozitanern und Malte sern sehr beliebt.

Mġarr ix-Xini: Innerhalb Xewkija gelegen. Eine sehr schmale Felsenbucht mit einem kleinen Strand, einge bettet in die felsigen Klippen unterhalb des Gebiets Ta’ Ċenċ in Sannat.

San Blas Cove: Eine versteckte aber reizvolle Hügellandschaft, die zu einem kleinen Sandstrand führt. Man erreicht sie am besten zu Fuß (ca. 30 Minuten Spaziergang von Nadur).

Xlendi: Eine kleine Bucht, die sich von einem kleinen Fischerdorf zu einem gut ausgestatteten Feri enort entwickelt hat. Die Bucht ist auf der einen Seite von einer steilen Klippe umgeben.

Xwejni Bay: Diese Bucht ist eine der ver steckten Reize von Gozo mit korallenbedeckten Felsgewölben. Sie ist über eine Strecke von Salzpfannen, in denen noch heute Salz gewonnen wird, zu erreichen.
