The placement system

40 credit module This must be passed in order to gain a degree endorsed with

industrial placement This module cannot be used to substitute for any of the taughtmodules

Placement Plan

Required to present a portfolio containing evidence ofexperience gained.

Goal of the Placement

To enable students to gain relevant practical experience

that allows them to transfer knowledge, skills and

understanding developed in an academic context to a

workplace environment and to foster their development

as reflective practitioners.

To enable students to develop professional

competencies appropriate to Quantity Surveying career

path.

Placement Duration

Minimum 10 Months

A clear indication of the Start and Finish datesof your placement must be indicated in your

paper work

Selecting your PlacementDuring this time the following skills development is anticipated

At the consultancy organisation

Preliminary estimating, cost planning, preparation of Bills of Quantities, specification writing,tender documentation, tender procedure and evaluation, contractual documentation, interim

valuation, variations and extra works, management of claims, preparation of final accounts,

specialised services

At the contracting organisation

Estimating and tendering, selection of sub-contractors, project planning site organisation,

preparation of interim valuation, sub-contractor payments, variations and extra works, preparation

and negotiation of claims, final accounts, arbitration and litigation, pro0gress monitoring and cost

control, work studies, documentation and record keeping

What you do at your selected placement is important- especially in terms of

reporting. The above is just some of the skills you might seek to gain whilst on

placement

Placement Tutor & Your Placement

Placement Tutor and you have an important relationship

Your Responsibility

agree on the Skill/Competency you intend to develop with the PT

Agree on the process on development with the PT

Keep accurate records and submit them monthly

Ensure your employer is aware of the requirements that need to be

fulfilled while you are on placement

Ensure that the skills you intended to develop are indeed the ones that

you are learning or advise placement tutor of change in skillsdevelopment plan

Placement Tutors Responsibility

Monitor your performance and advise PD if student not fulfilling

agreement

How do you select a placement and your responsibility

Plan your placement: when deciding on the type

of skills you wish to develop ask the followingquestions:

What do you want to gain from the experience?

What kind of skills do you need to develop further or

lack? Selected Placement- Is it Convenience? Or Other

agenda?

Select placement for right reasons

This document must have specific time lines completed and you

must report monthly on the outcome of the skill development. It is

your responsibility to ensure that this document is agreed upon with

your placement employer, yourself and PT.When completing this plan, you may seek advice from the PT

however ultimately you need to know what skills you are lacking

and whether your chosen placement employer is in a position to

provide you with the training necessary to obtain such skills

3. Placement Portfolio Template

This template has been provided as guide to assist you in

record keeping. This template will provide you with

guidelines on what kind information will be examined to

ensure you fulfill the requirements of the placement. At theend of each month of your placement, your supervisor

should sign the document and this should be emailed to

your PT. You must also include supporting documentation
