GeBE develops and manufactures data input and outputsystems in hard- and software for industrial applications,focusing on small thermal printers as well as keyboards ofvarious technologies with electronic controllers controlledby µ-processors.

In thermal printing, the color develops within the coatingof the thermal paper. It therefore becomes part of theprinter and has a significant effect on the overall result.The wrong type of thermal paper or one of bad qualitycan cause damage to the printer within only a shortamount of time. Surface RoughnessDuring operation, the thermal paper will graduallygrind down the print head. Good quality papers havea smooth surface, which makes them less mechani-cally abrasive. Due to their particularly low surfaceroughness, topcoat papers are generally less abrasiveagainst the print head than non-topcoat papers.

Ion ContentAs a result of the production process, thermal paperscontain free charge carriers in the form of Na, K, andCl ions. In high humidity, these ions will react veryaggressively with the glass passivation of the printhead, gradually corroding it.The ion content of a good quality thermal paper isbelow (Na<500ppm, K<100ppm, and Cl<300ppm).

TemperatureDuring thermal printing, the print elements inside theprint head are heated up to temperatures of up to400 °C within µseconds. The bulk of the heat flowsinto the thermal paper and reacts with the thermo-sen-sitive layer. This causes the print head to cool down.An efficient heat transfer therefore adds to the life spanof the print head.

Good Quality Thermal Paperssupport a type of self cleaning effect. If the heating periods have been selected accurately,and the print head has been mechanically set correct-ly, there will only be a small deposit right behind theprint elements. With the wrong settings, these depo-sits will grow continuously in the direction of the printelements, or they will burn directly into the elements.In this case, the print elements will be thermally insu-lated causing them to rapidly wear.

Thermal Printing on Pre-Printed PaperThe thermal printing technology also allows the printingon pre-printed paper.

Rules for the Printing on Pre-Printed Paper1. The areas that are to be printed should have as little

ink application as possible, preferably no ink at all.2. Only use colors with a temperature resistance of up to

230 °C minimum and are specified as thermal printink.

3. Safety inks, metalic inks, or flourenscent inks may notbe printed on. Hologram films should also be placedoutside the print image.

4. The thermal output (blackening) has to be reduced,and a different printer setting may have to be selec-ted.
