1. FROM MINE TO CAMPUS – A PIT IN TRANSITION

A lot has happened on the mine site since the last tonne of coal was mined in the shafts of Göttelborn mine in 2000.

Industriekultur Saar has created a site of knowledge with the character of a town on the more than 130 hectares of mine land in a ‘second shift’, offering space for industry, innovation and learning on approximately 30 hectares.

Other topics here include culture, nature, relaxation and tourism.

2. A ‘GOLD MINE’ FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE 2.1 LOCATION ADVANTAGES

There are many factors in favour of Göttelborn Campus

These include the optimum location right on the highway network A1/A8/A623 (20 minutes by car from the state capital Saarbrücken, 30 minutes to Saarbrücken Airport) and a flexible administration concept comprising a mixture of rental and sale.

The companies that have relocated here – from leading international nano-technology through large engineering companies through to start-ups and gastronomy businesses – really appreciate it. Up to now 16 companies have created approximately 500 jobs.

The area also offers space for apprenticeships and training for young specialist staff.

And solar energy is now used in place of fossil fuels.

2. A ‘GOLD MINE’ FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE 2.2. WHO IS ON SITE ALREADY?

It is a very wide spectrum.

It extends from globally operating companies like Nanogate AG and Hydac System GmbH through to regional service providers such as GVT Gesellschaft für Vakuum-Technik mbH, Ingenieurbüro Krück, Life Gesundheitszentrum (fitness studio and physiotherapy practice) or CaféCantine ‘Flöz’.

3. A MINE OF KNOWLEDGE

Göttelborn Campus is currently home to two colleges with 640 students: the university of applied sciences htw saar Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft des Saarlandes and the public administration university FHVS Fachhochschule für Verwaltung des Saarlandes.

At the beginning only the htw saar course Aviation Business was located in the former pithead baths. In addition to this the university now also uses the different renovated buildings for its faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering with the associated libraries, study rooms and a canteen.

The former, now renovated, pithead baths are now used by FHVS for the training of approximately 500 students in the faculty of General Administration and Law enforcement.

4. FROM FOSSIL FUEL TO RENEWABLE ENERGY

A 16 hectare solar power station had been installed at the former tailings basin within four years of the losing of the Göttelborn mine.

The photovoltaic system, which was opened in 2004, now produces power for over 3,500 households, without any emissions and using its 50,000 solar modules, at the same location where fossil fuels were mined just a few years earlier.

5. EXCURSION DESTINATION

The future town of Göttelborn is not only an attractive industrial and training location but also offers many sights for tourists. Because of its historical background this former mine site offers an opportunity to enter the highest mining tower in the world via Shaft IV.

IKS (Industriekultur Saar) and DSK (RAG Deutsche Steinkohle AG ) have cooperated to develop a new, attractive, green site around the former mine. The slag landscape, which was completed in 2015, now offers an opportunity to walk or cycle on the rock plateau. When there is good visibility you can see across to the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Hunsrück Mountains from here.

The ‘Himmelspfeil’, another worthwhile attraction at the future town, offers similarly impressive vistas.
