Current Industrial Energy Consumption

• Industrial energy consumption accounted for more than a fifth of all UK energy consumption in 2003.

• 34,634 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent were consumed in 2003 (1593 PJ). That’s a 4% decrease since 2001.

• In 2003, the largest sub-sector was the chemicals industry accounting for 22% of all industrial energy consumption.

• + 4% 1996 to 2001, but back to - 3% 2001 to 2003.

• Overall, + 17% increase in Chemicals.

• 58% decrease in Iron and Steel.

Conclusions

• 1394 PJ of energy required by 2030 if current trends continue.

• If see increase in renewable energies i.e wind power, then industrial energy consumption will considerably increase. (1820 PJ)

• Future reduction in energy intensity depends upon the structure, efficiency and technologies used.
