Dear Parents, This week we inducted the remainder of our College leaders who have taken an oath to lead positively, be actively involved and to undertake their duties diligently and thoughtfully. I highlighted some of the many attri- butes that make a good leader, and my hope is that at the end of their term they will be proud of what they have achieved. I also hope that they will be able to reflect back after their tenure and say, ‘‘Yes, I was active in my role, and yes, I did contribute to the betterment of the College and the community, and yes, I made a difference.” This Friday sees the end of another very busy term, and I would like to thank all of our staff and all of our students who have worked so hard at the many dif- ferent activities and events that make St Philip’s unique. I am in awe of the quality of the programs our staff put together, and I am in awe of the outcomes our students produce; your children are truly receiving a world class education. I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all in Term 4. Dear Parents,

This week we inducted the remainder of our College leaders who have taken an oath to lead positively, be actively involved and to undertake their duties diligently and thoughtfully.

I highlighted some of the many attri-butes that make a good leader, and my hope is that at the end of their term they will be proud of what they have achieved.

I also hope that they will be able to reflect back after their tenure and say, ‘‘Yes, I was active in my role, and yes, I did contribute to the betterment of the College and the community, and yes, I made a difference.”

This Friday sees the end of another very busy term, and I would like to thank all of our staff and all of our students who have worked so hard at the many dif-ferent activities and events that make St Philip’s unique. I am in awe of the quality of the programs our staff put together, and I am in awe of the outcomes our students produce; your children are truly receiving a world class education.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you all in Term 4.

Regards,

Roger Herbert Principal

Boys’ Boarding News

How quickly the term has gone! It has been a great term full of lots of good times.

This morning, as with most mornings, the junior boys were at the school oval kicking a footy and waiting for school to begin. It is great to see the camaraderie and brotherly attitudes amongst the boys. There was a real sense of pride and respect amongst the boys. Fan-tastic to see!

Over the weekend the AFL grand final was played. Most of our boys were in the winning Under 15’s or Under 18’s teams, or umpiring. They all ran and played their hearts out. Well done to all involved! On Saturday night the boarding house was very quiet, as most boarders were out for the evening. Those who remained had some fun making pizzas at the College’s Food Tech kitchen. To their credit all of the boys made some very delicious pizzas. Following our cooking session we took a walk into town and I treated the boys to a gelato at Uncle Edy’s.

With the holidays upon us, it is a great time to check on your child’s uniforms, shoes and clothes. Some boys are in need of some re-placement clothes or a restock. In particular, fresh socks are needed by most of the boys. Some could do with a fresh pair of shoes too.

It has been a great term and all of the boys have been getting involved with activities and enjoying themselves. Of late there have been a few occasions where boarders have left with family, but the supervisors have not been informed or family members have not met with the supervisors before taking their child. Please take the time to check in with whoever is on duty before you take your child. Thank you for your cooperation.

Space has also become a bit of a concern as some boarders have a large amount of belongings. Although we do have some space for storage, boarders have been asked to take home anything they don’t need.

Next term is only eight weeks long, and it will fly by. I look forward to seeing all of the boarders upon their return and having another great term.

The Duty phone is the immediate point of contact to the boarders. The number is 0400 972 342.

Apples

A few years ago, a group of salesmen went to a regional sales con-vention in Chicago. They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner.

In their rush, with tickets and briefcases in hand, moving quickly through the airport terminal, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly missed boarding.

All but one! He paused, took a deep breath, quickly assessed the situation -- and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him, waved good-bye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then, he returned to the terminal where the apples were still all over the terminal floor.

The man was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl running the stand, he discovered, was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, all the while helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the rushing crowd swirled about her, no one stopping and no one caring for her plight.

Chaplain’s Message

No one else, that is. The salesman knelt on the floor with her, gathered up the apples, put them back on the table and helped organize her display. As he did this, he noticed that many of them had become battered and bruised. These he set aside in another basket.

When he had finished, he pulled out his wallet and said to the girl, “Here, please take this $40 for the damage we did. Are you okay?” She nodded through her tears. “I hope we didn’t spoil your day too badly,” he said.

As the salesman started to walk away, the bewildered blind girl called out to him, “Mister...” He paused and turned to look back into those blind eyes. She continued, “Are you Jesus?”

He stopped in mid-stride, and he wondered, stunned by the words. Then slowly, he made his way to catch the later flight with that question burning in his soul: “Are you Jesus?”
