Home to the Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires,
the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its
long history.
India is a republic consisting of various states and union territories with a parliamentary system
of democracy. It is one of the world’s largest economy at market exchange rates as well as in
purchasing power. Progressive Economic reforms have transformed it into the second fastest
growing large economy.
India's climate is strongly influenced by the Himalayas and the Thar Desert, both of which drive
the monsoons. The Himalayas prevent cold Central Asian katabatic winds from blowing in,
keeping the bulk of the Indian subcontinent warmer than most locations at similar latitudes. The
Thar Desert plays a crucial role in attracting the moisture-laden southwest summer monsoon
winds that, between June and October, provide the majority of India's rainfall. Four major climatic
groupings predominate in India: tropical wet, tropical dry, subtropical humid and alpine.
India - An economic giant awakes
India - An economic giant awakes (cont’d)
With an average annual GDP growth rate of 5.7% for the past two decades, the economy is among
the fastest growing in the world. India has the world's second largest labour force. Major industries
include automobiles, cement, chemicals, consumer electronics, food processing, machinery, mining,
petroleum, pharmaceuticals, steel, transportation equipment, and textiles. Along with India’s fast
economic growth comes its growing demand for energy. According to the Energy Information
Administration, India is the sixth largest consumer of oil and third largest consumer of coal.
More recently, India has capitalised on its large pool of educated, English-speaking people, and
trained professionals to become an important outsourcing destination for multinational
corporations and a popular destination for medical tourism. India has also become a major exporter
of software as well as financial, research, and technological services.
In 2007, estimated exports stood at US$140 billion and imports were around US$224.9 billion.
Textiles, jewellery, engineering goods and software are major export commodities. While crude oil,
machineries, fertilizers, and chemicals are major imports. India's most important trading partners
are the United States, the European Union, and China.
Mysore, renamed to Mysuru is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka, India. It is the
headquarters of the Mysore district and the Mysore division and lies about 146 km (91 mi) southwest of
Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka.
While tourism is the major industry in Mysore, the growth of information technology related industry in the
first decade of the 21st century, has resulted in the city emerging as the second largest software exporter in
the state of Karnataka, next to Bangalore. Mysore is also well connected to other parts of India by railways
and road transport.
Mysore is located at 12.30° N 76.65° E and has an average altitude of 770 metres (2,526 ft). It is situated in
the southern region of the state of Karnataka, at the base of the Chamundi Hills and spreads across an area
of 128.42 km2 (50 sq mi). The summer season is from March to June, followed by the monsoon season from
July to November and the winter season from December to February. The highest temperature recorded in
Mysore was 38.5 °C (101 °F) on May 4, 2006 and in winter, temperatures as low as 9.6 °C (49 °F) have been
recorded. The average annual rainfall received by the city is 798.2 mm (31 in).
Mysore is situated between the rivers Kaveri and Kabini, which are a source of drinking water to the city.
The city has had an underground drainage system since 1904 and the entire sewage from the city drains into
four valleys; Kesare, Malalavadi, Dalavai and Belavatha. According to the census of 2001, Mysore city had a
total population of 799,228 with 406,363 males and 392,865 females, making it the second largest city in
Karnataka.
Mysore - The emerging IT giant
Mysore - The emerging IT giant (cont’d)
Traditionally, Mysore has been home to industries such as weaving, sandalwood carving, bronzework and the production of lime and salt. In a survey
conducted in 2001 by Business Today, the business arm of India Today, Mysore was ranked the 5th best city in India in which to conduct business. Moreover,
Mysore has truly emerged as the hub of the tourism industry in Karnataka, attracting about 2.5 million tourists in 2006.
For the industrial development of the city, the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) has established four industrial areas in and around
Mysore and are located in Belagola, Belawadi, Hebbal (Electronic City) and Hootagalli areas. The major industries in Mysore include BEML, J. K. Tyres,
Wipro, Falcon Tyres, L & T and Infosys. Since 2003, information technology companies have been creating bases in Mysore, with the city contributing Rs.
760 crores (US$190 million) to Karnataka's Rs. 48,700 crores ($12.175 billion) IT exports in the financial year 2006–2007. Infosys has established one of the
largest technical training centres in the world and Wipro has established its Global Service Management Center (GSMC) at Mysore. Non-IT related
services have been outsourced from other countries to companies in Mysore.
The nearest functional airport to the city is the Bengaluru International Airport at Bangalore. The Mandakalli airport near the city is being upgraded by the
Airports Authority of India and is expected to be operational by 2009.
Another major aspect to note is that Mysore has been gaining ground over the years, courtesy big brother Bangalore, which because of its proximity has
been sending corporate traffic Mysore's way. Infosys arrived here in 1999, giving legitimacy to the city's aspirations of being a software centre. Since then,
a number of other it companies-including Wipro, Software Paradigm and Mylax have set up shop in the erstwhile princely state. The result? Software
exports have soared from Rs 80 lakh in 1998-99 to Rs 35 crore in 2000-01. Needless to say, the potential is immense primarily because highly talented
engineers are available at costs lower than Bangalore's. Thanks to the presence of a number of engineering colleges in the city (incidentally, Infosys' head
N.R. Narayana Murthy is an alumni of Mysore University), sourcing skilled workforce hasn't been a problem. That apart, it has numerous central
government undertakings like the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Bharat Earth Movers and Central Sericulture Technology Development
Institute. All of them have in turn encouraged development of ancillary industries-albeit, small-in and around the city. It isn't just new economy companies
that are discovering Mysore. In the recent past, Nestle has set up a manufacturing base in the Nanjangud Industrial estate, as has Reid & Taylor. RPG
Telecom and Kirloskar also have operations here. New industrial estates like Hebbal Industrial Area, Belagolu Metagahalli and Hootagahalli are being
promoted.
