THE LIBRARY COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIARESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS in

AMERICAN HISTORY and CULTURE for 1998-1999

The Library Company of Philadelphia each year offers a number ofshort-term fellowships for research in residence in its collections, whichare capable of supporting scholarship in a variety of fields and disci-plines relating to the history of North America, principally in the 18thand 19th centuries. Founded in 1731, the Library Company was thelargest public library in America until the 1850s and thus contains printedmaterials on every aspect of American culture and society in that pe-riod. It has since become a research library with over half a millionbooks, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, prints, maps, photographsand manuscripts.

The collection is especially strong in Afro-Americana, German-Ameri-cana, American Judaica, history of women, domestic economy, bank-ing and business, medicine, agriculture, natural history, philanthropy,education, art (including Philadelphia-area prints and photographs), ar-chitecture, technology, local and regional history, and the history ofprinting and publishing. The library also has a significant collection ofBritish and Continental books and pamphlets of the 17th to the 19thcenturies, reflecting the intense interest of Americans in the world aroundthem. The library's holdings of American novels, plays, poems, essays,and orations up to 1860 are extensive, and complementary collections ofBritish and Continental literature, popular non-fiction, and periodicalsilluminate the context in which these literary texts were read.

The fellowship program supports both post-doctoral and dissertationresearch. The project proposal should demonstrate that the Library Com-pany has primary sources central to the research topic. Candidates areencouraged to inquire about the appropriateness of a proposed topic.

The fellowships are tenable for any one month from June 1998 to May1999. The stipend is $1,400. International applications are encouraged.
