In meeting with Tonie Casey (Community Center Director) to assess their needs, the girls decided they wanted to plant a shade garden, enhance the roses and add two water features. 23RD Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 8, 2019

Appreciating Mary, Our Blessed Mother

Today, September 8, is usually the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, Our Blessed Mother. But because September 8 falls on Sunday this year, the celebration of the 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time supersedes the feast day of the birth of Mary. However, it does not mean that we can't celebrate and ap-preciate Mary's birth this Sunday. In our hearts and prayers, we give thanks to God for giving us Mary as an example of Christian faith, whose "yes" to God brought us the Child Jesus, our Savior. We are also grateful for Mary's powerful intercessions, especially in times of temptation, sickness, and desperation. Nowadays, we need to assert Mary's role in our life ac-cording to our Catholic Christian faith. We need Mary's prayers to bring back faith in Jesus Christ and love for the Sacraments to many people, particularly the youth who are influenced by the strong forces of secularism and lib-eralism. We need her to pray for our pope, bishops, priests, and religious that they may be faithful to their vows, be holy, and become true shepherds and servants of the Gospel. We need her to guard the Catholic Church against evil attacks. Let Mary crush the Devil's head as foreshadowed in the Book of Genesis (Chapter 3:15): "I will put enmity be-tween you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." Let's ask Mary to help us reject the Devil's tempta-tions, and to call on her for help whenever we face temp-tation. So I suggest that we bring back the fervor of Marian devo-tions in our parishes and reintroduce Mary to our youth as a mother who cares for our needs and accompanies us in our aspiration for holiness. I suggest that we evangelize people through meaningful and inspiring Marian piety by traditional practices such as praying the Holy Rosary and novenas and candlelight processions. One of my priest-friends told me that we don't have to come up with a magic formula to bring life to our Church. We just have to uncover the richness, beauty, glory, and effectiveness of our age-old traditions of liturgy, prayers, and practices like Marian piety. I think he's right. We thank you, and we love you, Mary, Our Mother! Pray for us, the Church, and the whole world!

Your loving pastor,

Fr. Rodel “Odey” Balagtas

Did You Know Teach your children the concept of “total body safety”.

Teaching the concept of “total body safety” encompasses all parts of the body, including the head, mouth, legs and arms, which are usually overlooked. Child abuse perpetra-tors can use any part of the body to stimulate a child or young person, or to arouse themselves. Additionally, it is important to stress to teens the importance of “total body safety” in their relationships with others. Tell them, “Just because a person is a close friend, or even a girlfriend or boyfriend, that does not give them a right to touch you in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable.” For additional information, or to contact the Office of Safeguard the Children, please call or email us at: (213) 637-7508 [email protected].

Young Disciples of Incarnation YDs meet Sundays after the Sunday, 5:30 PM MASS at the Parish Center Patio. If you have any questions, please email Louis or
