Historian, Padamshri – Dr. Saryu Doshi, new Chairman Ar. Dhiraj Jhamaria and his committee members, graced by members of IIID, eminent architects, artists, and the city’s intellectual elite.

The evening started with the customary lamp lighting ceremony, marking the special beginnings of the Chapter alongside the celebrations of the 104th birth anniversary of Sawai Maan Singh. This was followed by the Inauguration of the exhibition “Splendours of Indian Architectural Heritage”, a special highlight of the evening curated by Dr. Saryu Doshi. India’s resplendent history and architecture spanning various eras through the Hindu, Islamic and western influences was on display in one of the magnificent halls of the City Palace. One could not help but feel the surge of national pride over our heritage monuments as one took a round of the exhibition, interspersed with bouts of animated conversation. The service of high tea and the quiet dignified hospitality of the City Palace remained with us, a continuous aura of aristocracy. The Princess was surely the show stopper. The new committee heralded their tenure with style, substance and esteemed company!!

A round of felicitations introduced the crowd to the distinguished panel of visitors. Pratap Jadhav had the crowd in rapt attention with his eloquence. His impromptu speech was evident in enthusiasm and demonstrated a focused mission. The audience was impressed by his emphasis on education, client-designer expectations and privileges, and the need to bring the profession

into the households of people and to demonstrate to them the worthiness of an interior designer as a professional. The Chapter Chairman Ar. Dhiraj Jhamaria thanked the JRC Immediate Past Chairman Ar. Sanjay Kothari for a brilliant innings, a smooth transition and his good fortune of inheriting a Design Centre. He introduced his team members to the gathering and also spoke of his agenda for the next two years. ChANGiNG of the GuARD – the 9th iNvestituRe of the mANAGiNG Committee of iiiD-hRC

The swearing in of the new Managing Committee was interesting as this was probably the first time that the entire committee read the manifesto of duties together as a Team lead by the Chairperson ID Sona Chatwani.

Elegantly dressed in a stunning black Kalamkari sari, the newly anointed IIID HRC Chairperson Ms. Sona Chatwani was the picture of poise and dynamism as she stepped up to the podium and spent the next fifteen minutes elaborating on her vision for the upcoming two year term. She congratulated Imm. Past Chairman Ravi and his team, and the other seniors of HRC for raising the bar so high.

Spelling out her HRC Team’s and the National agenda for the term 2014-16, she said, “Every great journey and adventure begins with a premise and a promise. This year’s National Agenda is the Panchatatva or the 5 truths – Ideate, Invigorate, Innovate, Integrate and Disseminate, which will be the core philosophy that will drive our organization for the next two years”.

As part of the National Agenda, the primary focus for the upcoming term will be the promotion of Indian art and crafts. The vision 14-16, she stated, has been incorporated for everyone; including students, trade, sponsors and the masses. But major emphasis will be to bring the young designers to the forum.

“Taking design to the masses is a part of our National Agenda and would work towards this vison. At the Chapter level, we hope to create a bigger impact at exhibitions and will take part and lend support to other allied organizations”, she added.

Close to Ms. Chatwani’s heart is the CSR initiatives which will be worked on aggressively, focusing specially on

the lost and forgotten arts and craft of Telangana. “We will be working with artisans and craftsmen; going to their workplace in towns and villages; with the idea of reviving and documenting the craft and facilitating its sales”.

She also added “Another important CSR activity would be working closely with government agencies revamping an entire stretch of street in Hyderabad. As a designer, an important responsibility of ours lies in documentation and archiving. We will be setting up a subcommittee for the documentation of heritage homes. We will be setting up different sub-committees and we look forward to all of you members being a part of these committees”.

She ended her inspiring speech by promising that the next two years will be a whirlwind of a celebration of design for the Hyderabad Chapter. She invited every HRCian to be an integral part of this adventure.•
