a IIID-BMRCL initiative

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Project Background

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is in the process of

implementing Bangalore’s first Mass Transit Rail system. The Bangalore Metro

Rail Project was cleared by the Karnataka Government in March, 2005 and theUnion Government approved the project in April, 2006.

The Bangalore Metro weaves through the bustling commercial and residential

areas of the city. The first phase of Bangalore Metro, consisting of two corridors

of double line electrified, will cover a total of 42.30 km. The East-West Corridor

of REACH 1 of the Bangalore Metrorail (from M.G. Road to Byappanahalli) is due

to commence operations soon. This REACH traverses though two prominent

roads namely, Swamy Vivikananda Road and Mahatma Gandhi Road and BMRCL

have appropriately named the stations at these roads after them.

Modern India's rich and diverse history throws up two iconic traditions, whoseconfluence makes the perfect dynamic for a civilisation culture of the future. The

one Spiritual and the other Secular. In it stand two men, who similarly sought

that convergence.

Swami Vivekananda chose to bring the country's spiritual ethos out of its

cloister, into the ambit of the global, secular forum. Mohandas Karamchand

Gandhi on the other hand, took political action to the heights of spiritual

endeavour. Both were strategic. Both were successful.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)  in association with IIID,

Bangalore wants to be that unique catalyst for this iconic city by involvingcollege students to participate in an ideas competition to design the interior

walls/spaces of the station to reflect and celebrate the life, spirit and message of

the twin personas of Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi at the stations

named after them. This is an opportunity for students to express their fitting

tribute to the timeless values practiced by these great souls–universal wellbeing

and individual responsibility- and be a part of Bangalore’s Urban History.

To this endeavour BMRCL is proud to be associated with the Institute of Indian

Interior Designers (IIID)www.iiid.in , a premiere National professional body with

its Head-Office in Mumbai and Bangalore being one of its regional chapters. The

BMRCL-IIID invites student studying in Karnataka to put their creative minds to

come out with out-of-the-box designs which not only reflect the ethos of these

great personas but should be captivating to the 35000 Metro commuters who

will be passing through these station daily.  Apart from designing the said

stations, the median between the piers from Mahatma Gandhi Metro Station up

to Trinity Circle junction and Trinity Circle junction up to Swami Vivekananda

Metro Station is also set out for this ideas competition. In keeping with the spirit

of the theme there is NO PARTICIPATING FEE for this competition.

1.2 Statement of Vision

Metros need not be boring or dreary! On the contrary, the IIID – BMRCL want to

attract passengers with good station design and showcase the design talent of

our State. This often means extra effort for the metro operators, but it will pay

off when the metro is not just a means of transport, but something the residents

can be proud of too. This is an ideas competition with a view to helping our

community enjoy innovative design of public spaces. Over 35000 commuters will

use this first stretch of Metro every day and the visuals on the interiors of the

stations will gently and constantly imbibe the commuters the relevance of these

great souls in modern times.

2. Design Guidelines

2.1 Design Brief

The intent of the design ideas competition is set out herein under for the said

two Metro Stations and the medians between the piers.

2.1.1 Design for the interior spaces of Metro Stations

The design for each Metro station must primarily express the philosophies,

teachings, life and history that have made them immortal. The designs may also

include the historic connection that Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda

had with Bangalore. You may use different medium/ media to suit your design

be it technology, graphics, art, electronics and visuals.

2.1.2 Design for the medians between supporting columns

The median must act as a physical but not necessarily visual barrier between thetwo sides of the road, to regulate traffic and protect the structural supports of

the Metro rail. The median could be designed to reduce the glare from headlights

from the other side of the road. It is important that the median be aesthetically

pleasing without posing a distraction to the drivers.

2.2 Design Restrictions

•  Only specific walls surfaces within the Metro Stations will be available to

the designers and have been indicated in the design materials. The

exteriors of the Metro Stations are not available to designers, except the

exterior wall of the MG road station facing the Parade Grounds is available

for the design competition.

•  All structural supports and elements of the Metro Station and the median

are not available to designers for any form of physical use or support.

Frequently asked question:

Q. What is the scope of this competition? Is there a fee for the

competition?

Ans. The scope of this competition is to reflect thematically the vision of the

Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekanda and their relevance in modern times.

The station buildings at MG Road and SV Road, have two distinct portions: the

unpaid area, where one buys the ticket and the other, the paid area, where the

commuter is ready to board the train. The scope is restricted to the design of the

interior walls of both the paid area and unpaid areas of the station buildings,

especially the walls surface that that is clearly visible to a commuter as they

enter/exit the station building. However, the exterior wall of MG road station

facing the parade ground is available for the design competition.

The design completion is also extended to designing the median along MG Road

Station up to Trinity Circle junction and from Trinity Circle junction to Swami

Vivekananda station.

There is no fee for the competition.

Q. Should the design of the entire interior wall be on the theme of

Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi?

Ans. Yes the design should essentially be focused to showcase Mahatma Gandhi

and Swamy Vivekananda their ideology and the relevance in modern times.

Ans. No, we cannot alter the structural walls. However if your concept requires

structural support to hold your theme on the internal walls you may suggest the

requirement.

Gandhi and Swamy Vivekananda?
