In April 2016, I applied online for an audi4on to get into the Hallé Youth Orchestra. Following my applica4on, I received an invita4on to audi4on the next month. It was an informal and friendly audi4on which helped me to enjoy it and play to the best of my ability. In the audi4on, I had to play an accompanied piece of my choice as well as three extracts I had been posted and a piece of sight reading. It was a nervous wait aGer the audi4on but I managed to get in!
Since being a member of the orchestra, I have had many exci4ng performance opportuni4es, my favourite being on tour last summer. We had just a five day summer school to prepare for the tour to Dublin and we were playing challenging repertoire, but everything came together for a brilliant performance in a beau4ful church (on my birthday!).
I have grown as a musician since I began playing in the orchestra due to the countless sight reading opportuni4es which have been given to me. Also, being surrounded by other musicians playing at a high level, gives me a chance to learn from them too. My favourite piece that I have played with the orchestra in the past year was Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, it was my first performance with the Hallé Youth Orchestra and it was amazing to see our hard work really pay off.
I highly recommend any musicians of around a grade six standard to audi4on as the orchestra has given me more confidence in my orchestral playing and general performing -‐ it is an experience I will con4nue to enjoy for years to come.

On Friday the 24th March the MAPAS Community Choir will return to the Newcastle Under Lyme music festival to defend their Open Vocal Category title.
The community choir under the leadership of MAPAS tutor Ashley Mellor made the 96 mile round trip in March of 2016 to perform as part of the pres4gious Newcastle-‐Under-‐Lyme Fes4val for Music , Speech and Drama with around one thousand performers taking part across two days. Of the choirs success and defence of their 4tle choir leader Ashley said: "It was such a proud moment for the Salford community choir when we won our class at the Newcastle-‐Under-‐Lyme music fes:val back in March last year. The choir worked so well together, with an infec:ous team spirit. All choirs performing in the class were a pleasure to watch, and there was a good feeling of camaraderie in the air. The class seems to have grown significantly for 2017 with lots of interest so we shall have to work just as hard this year if we want to be in with a chance of holding our :tle -‐ but I do not doubt that our choir will rise to the challenge as they always do and make me a very proud conductor indeed."
The MAPAS Community Choir has been a real success story over the last eighteen months having increased in size by over seventy percent in the last year. The choir con4nues to progress and have several other exci4ng performance opportuni4es on the horizon in addi4on to their return to Newcastle. On the fourth of March the choir will be compe4ng much closer to home in the Salford MAPAS Choral Fes4val to be held at PatricroG Methodist Church and in April another away day to Leicester for a singing workshop. The choir will also have a prime slot at the ‘MAPAS @50 fes4val’ to be held at Ordsall Hall on Saturday 15th July. Together with the MAPAS Singing Squad and Youth Choir they will perform ‘Zimbe’ an exci4ng suite of African songs by Alexander L’Estrange. It promises to be an exci4ng 12 months for the choir with hopefully more silverware to add to the MAPAS trophy cabinet!
If you are interested in joining our Community Choir and being a part of their continued success please come along each Thursday here at the Arts Centre between 7.15pm-8.45pm.
