Spring Annual Report 2012 for the blind and visually impaired Geri McGinty’s vision loss wasn’t much of a problem until 2006. After making a left-hand turn, in her rear- view mirror she saw a school bus full of children directly behind her that she hadn’t seen a moment before. She returned to her Phoenix, Arizona home immediately, realizing she had just driven for the last time. “My heart was in my throat. I was devastated. I could have killed or injured those children, those babies. It was not a choice. I wasn’t safe,” said Geri, who suffers from a retinal vascular disorder. “My daughter used to take me places, but I needed to have some freedom. I’m independent and didn’t want to rely upon her.” Without the use of her car, she was certain her independence was gone forever. “I was a home health nurse. I thought my career and life were over,” she said. Geri’s next door neighbor approached as she cried in her car. The neighbor, who happened to be Geri’s 80-year-old father, listened to her story and her concern about her future. Her father explained that he had nothing but time on his hands and he’d be happy to chauffeur his daughter to work assignments. “He always wanted to know when ‘we’ were going to work,” she said. When her father died at the end of 2011, Geri’s daughter encouraged her mother to leave Phoenix and share her home in Soquel. Once in her new home, her top priority was to maintain her independence. Less than a month after her move, Geri contacted Vista Center in Santa Cruz seeking information about services. She quickly joined a support group, received orienta- tion and mobility instruction for her new environment, had a low vision evaluation and learned about local resources. for the bl ind and visual ly impaired

Geri McGinty’s vision loss wasn’t much of a problem until 2006. After making a left-hand turn, in her rear-view mirror she saw a school bus full of children directly behind her that she hadn’t seen a moment before.

I’m independent and didn’t want to rely upon her.”

Without the use of her car, she was certain her independence was gone forever. “I was a home health nurse. I thought my career and life were over,” she said. Geri’s next door neighbor approached as she cried in her car. The neighbor, who happened to be Geri’s 80-year-old father, listened to her story and her concern about her future. Her father explained that he had nothing but time on his hands and he’d be happy to chauffeur his daughter to work

assignments. “He always wanted to know when ‘we’ were going to work,” she said. When her father died at the end of 2011, Geri’s daughter encouraged her mother to leave Phoenix and share her home in Soquel. Once in her new home, her top priority was to maintain her independence. Technology and the latest research and developments concerning eye disease will be showcased at the Saturday, May 12, Low Vision Expo in San Jose. Mirrored after a long-standing successful event in Santa Cruz, the San Jose event is being co-sponsored by Vista Center and the Santa Clara Valley Blind Center (SCVBC). “The Santa Cruz Expo has been going on for years and is always very well attended,” said Garlyn Serame, Vista Center’s Director of Clinic Services. “By teaming up with SCVBC, we’re hoping to educate those living with vision loss and their families about local resources and

what the future may hold in terms of advancements in eye disease and accessible technology.” Michael May of the Sendero Group will provide a comparison of accessible Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and the opportuni-ties they provide for those living with vision loss. May has met with four

U.S. presidents including President Obama, and has been inducted into the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes Hall of Fame. Retinal Specialist Dr. Darius Moshfeghi, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Stanford, will discuss age-related macular degen-eration with a question and answer session to follow. Age-related macu-lar degeneration is one of the fastest growing eye conditions in America. Android Accessibility will be the presentation given by Google software engineer and Vista Center board member Charles Chen. Chen works on accessibility for the Android and Chrome smart phones at Google. Attendees will have the oppor-tunity to meet with numerous ven-dors throughout the day. Scheduled to be on hand are Access Ingenuity, J Bliss, HumanWare, CTAP, Sterling Adaptives, A&E Low Vision, VA Palo Alto’s Western Blind Rehabilitation Center, Freedom Vision and Vista Center’s Store. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration begin-ning at 9 a.m. The event will be held at SCVBC at 101 North Bascom, San Jose. Attendees are asked to RSVP, by calling Vista Center at 650.858.0202. If calling after hours, please leave your RSVP information by entering extension 102. Lunch will be available for $3 to those who RSVP. When making your reserva-tion, please note if you wish to order lunch and how many in your party wish to have a meal reserved for them.

“What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?” I read this quote a few weeks ago and was reminded of it, watching 24 blind and visually impaired school children participate in our Northern California Braille Challenge in early March. These youngsters were enthusiasti-cally competing over the course of several hours, demonstrating their skills in writing, reading and under-standing Braille. In the end, each of them received a medal, and the most accomplished among them were given additional awards. Some will go on to compete in the National Braille Challenge. From the looks on their faces when they marched in as a group to begin the competition, none of the participants was contemplating failure and everyone left that day a winner. I was proud that Vista Center plays an important role in developing such self-confidence in young people. The participants were addressed by Caitlin Hernandez, a former National Braille Challenge winner who started competing in the Northern California Braille Challenge in the early years of our event. She is now a senior at UC Santa Cruz, planning to work towards a master’s degree in literature. Caitlin is a Braille whiz. She is also a technology whiz, and enumerated the many devices that help her to be a high-achieving young woman and very successful adult role model. At Vista Center, we have recog-nized for a number of years that our clients can benefit from both high-

tech devices, such as computers and smart phones, and from low-tech ones, such as magnifiers, large-button phones and braillers. We are connecting clients and others who are visually impaired to the latest in accessible technology as fast as we can – and it’s hard to keep up! We have a Vista Center app available on Android phones – check it out. It has a number of helpful training videos, including instruction in how to use some of the technology-based devices that are able to help change the lives of visually impaired users. In addition to bringing young people together this spring, we recently brought a group of 40 for-mer Vista Center board members and board presidents together for a reunion and update on the status of the agency. It was impressive to see these leaders from the past 35 years who have been so instrumental in our growth and development, and affirming to know that they still have Vista Center in their hearts!

Months of planning and anticipa-tion went into preparing the Seventh Annual Woof to Woof in Scotts Valley, set for June 4, 2011, a day that broke records. Rainfall, in amounts unprec-edented for early June, fell upon the Skypark soccer fields. Event Co-Chair Claire Biancalana gathered together the volunteers who — clad in rain-coats, boots and rain pants — deter-mined the fundraiser could not go on as planned. “It was unreal. None of us could believe the amount of rain that was falling,” said Biancalana. “We were grateful our vendors were so under-standing about the cancellation.” But it took more than rain to dampen the enthusiasm and deter-mination of the Woof to Woof vol-unteers. Volunteers organized the event’s auction in a private home overlooking Monterey Bay in Capitola on July 10, and the invitation-only auction was standing-room only. Attendees enjoyed a barbe-cued lunch and beverages, and bid

on art and jewelry, wine and sport-ing goods, trips and dinners. Woof to Woof volunteers and brother and sis-ter, Nels Westman and Carin Hanna, hosted the auction. “We’re happy that Mother Nature cooperated with us this time,” said Westman. Though off to a soggy start, Woof to Woof 2011 brought in more than $20,000 for Vista Center programs. The Woof to Woof committee is reprising its Retriever Fever theme for 2012. This dog-centric occasion is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Scotts Valley at Skypark Soccer Fields, 361 Kings Village Road. We are hoping for a sunny day! Vintage Affaire switched things up for its 29th annual event, hosting the revered gala at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton for the first time in its history. Attendees followed the red carpet to be greeted warmly by Vintage Affaire Chair and 2010/11 Vista Center Board President Susan Martin. Food and wine pairings got attendees circulating through the silent auction. Chefs from Quattro Restaurant at the Four Seasons Silicon Valley, The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, Station 1 Restaurant, Madera at Rosewood Sand Hill and Dio Deka showed off their creativity

and culinary prowess by serving hors d’oeuvres that complemented the wines on hand. More than two dozen wineries, each sharing several wines, were represented and eager to talk about their wines and food pairings. Auctioneer John Glines brought his energy and enthusiasm to the live auction, which featured select items that garnered active bidding. Auction items included exclusive get-aways, fine wines, private dinners

and amazing adventures. Generous attendees raised nearly $32,000 for Vista Center’s Fund-A-Need. The 2011 event was dedicated to the memory and legacy of Marilyn Pratt, who served as the Vintage Affaire Chair in 1986 and 1994. She and her husband David worked for many years preparing the contents of the auction catalog, as well as serv-ing as Vintage Affaire Wine Advisors. The 30th Vintage Affaire is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 at the Woodside estate of a Silicon Valley icon. As in years past, the event will offer two levels of tickets. Club Level tickets are $225 and offer access to the silent and live auctions, pouring vintners and guest chefs. Patron Level tickets are $475 and, in addition to what is offered at the Club Level, include a wine pairing dinner after the live auction, along with an invitation to Vintage Evening, an extra special wine event held prior to Vintage Affaire at a private estate. Riders and spectators were treated to another brilliant and well-orchestrated event, thanks to the efforts of every-one associated with the 41st Annual Menlo Charity Horse Show (MCHS). Running from August 9-14, the 2011 event was up against one of its most formidable opponents ever — a dead-ly equine virus that was highly con-tagious and forced the cancellation of several California equestrian events scheduled earlier in the year. “Many riders and horse owners chose to sit out some shows earlier in the year out of great concern,” said MCHS Co-Chair Betsy Glikbarg. “Thankfully, our event was later in the year and we had a wonderful turnout.”

Riders came from near and far to compete at the Menlo Circus Club. Tina Dilandri, riding Avargo, was the Grand Prix winner. Royal Rider Handy Hunter winner was Karrie Rufer riding her horse, My Way. Local resident Taylor Siebel notched several victories including the KEW Farm Ryman Memorial Speed Class and Larry Mayfield Memorial Ride and Drive mounted on Natsu.

Under the tent for Friday night’s Speed Jumper Class, it was standing room only and the dinner that fol-lowed was sold out. Vendors clam-ored to secure a spot in the coveted Horse Show Marketplace, which sold out in record time. Sponsors also turned out in force. Several long-time sponsors including ABC 7/KGO, Mountain Home Stables, Summerhouse Farms and Shreve & Company, were joined by newcomers Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry and Louis Vuitton. The MCHS has been a faith-ful supporter of Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired and has been the largest special event fund-raiser for several years. Glikbarg pre-sented a check to the Vista Center Board of Directors for $433,000. The generous work on behalf of this committee has resulted in total Vista Center contributions in excess of $6,000,000. The 2012 event is slated for August 7-12 and will be held once again at the Menlo Circus Club. Formoreinformation,visitwww.menlohorseshow.com.

Susan Kokores: HowmanyyearshaveyoubeeninvolvedinsupportingVistaCenterandinwhatcapacities?

Mona Armistead: Thirty-one years ago, I was asked to form a group with the goal of establishing an event to support the then, Peninsula Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which is now Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. The tal-ented group of volun-teers associated with this effort developed a wine auction, which we named Vintage Affaire. Bob and I are so excited to be attending the 30th Anniversary of this event this June. Later on I served on the Vista Center Board of Directors from 1985 to 1991 and was president 1987-1988.

Bob Armistead: I have so enjoyed attending Vintage Affaire over the years. We have only missed one out of 30 years. We are both so appre-ciative that this fundraiser supports Vista Center!

SK: WhyhaveyousupportedVistaCentersosteadfastly?

MA: As a board member, I came to really appreciate the excellent staff and the tremendous benefits the

clients receive through Vista Center. I have always had a sensitivity to vision loss issues, and after my close involvement, my husband and I sim-ply have Vista Center in our hearts!

SK: Inyouropinion,whyisVistaCenteravitalresourcetoourcommunity?

Armisteads: Vista Center has been a long-standing resource, with a reputation for excellent services and

a compassionate staff. They work with people of all ages, from young children to the very old. One never knows when vision loss may occur. Vista Center helps cli-ents learn the practical adjustments such as mobility or daily liv-ing skills, in addition to providing emotional support for the entire

family. Vision loss is a very scary thing to face, so it is great to know that Vista Center is a resource you can count on.

SK: DoyouhaveanyadviceforothercommunitymemberslikeyouwhomaybeconsideringaddingVistaCentertotheirestateplans?

Armisteads: For us, it was just bit-ing the bullet and actually updating our estate plans. That is an easy thing to put off. Once we decided to have a charitable part of our estate, we knew instantly that Vista Center would be one of our beneficiaries.

ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTEDfor the bl ind and visual ly impaired

Continued from page 1

Within a week of registering with the county’s paratransit service, Geri was out of the house exploring her new hometown of Soquel. “My daughter used to take me places, but I needed to have some freedom. I’m indepen-dent and didn’t want to rely upon her.” Always eager to reach out to others, Geri shared her newfound knowledge with a paratransit pas-senger who also had vision loss. Geri explained how to schedule multiple destinations in one day with the ser-vice. “We emailed one another and I described how to do it. I told her I’d accompany her on her next multiple-stop trip if that would make her feel more confident,” she said. Geri’s workout friends at the Capitola Recreation Center know she has limited vision and save her a spot up front so she can see the

instructor. And when she felt she needed more independence at church instead of relying upon her daugh-ter for sighted guide, she took her cane to church. “That pretty much announced my vision loss.” Leading by example educates people about vision loss and Geri is determined to make the best of her situation and help others in the com-munity to retain their independence. “Independence is important,” she said. “If you let people do too much, you get too comfortable.”
