Bringing Home the Gold:Danielle Kanas Accepts No Limits

For as long as she can remember, Danielle Kanas has been a member of the Shriners Hospitals for Children family. The 11-year-old Tampa resident and rising sixth grader at Martinez Middle School in Lutz became a Shriners Hospitals patient as a toddler, shortly after coming from China to the United States and settling in New Jersey with her adoptive mother, JoAnne Kanas.

In her infancy, Danielle was found at a train station. After she was left at an orphanage, doctors surmised the circulation in her left arm had somehow been compromised, causing irreversible damage to her left hand and the lower part of her arm below the elbow. As a result, both impaired areas had to be amputated.

Over the years, Danielle has received multiple prostheses, as well as occupational therapy beginning at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia and now at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa, a place where she knows many of the medical staff and other patients by name. “She’s home and she’s comfortable when she’s there,” her mom said.

In addition, being a single-arm amputee has mattered little to Danielle outside the four walls of the hospital. “She is a very determined young lady,” said Andy Chasanoff, coach of Danielle’s Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay team. “She wants to make the most of her abilities. She is always upbeat and positive.”

Danielle’s can-do attitude shined during her team’s recent participation in the National Junior Disability Championships (NJDC), where Danielle captured 15 gold medals and set a new national record in 13 of the events. Some of the events Danielle competed in included discus, shot put, the long jump and her favorite – javelin. “One of the great things about Danielle is she doesn’t compete for the medals or to set records,” Chasanoff said. “She just goes out there wanting to do better than she did before. For the intrinsic reward of knowing she did her personal best.”

The girl whom Chasanoff describes as “one of the most well-rounded kids I know,” is also more than just an athlete. She’s a straight “A” student, a Girl Scout and a guitar player. She played the Star-Spangled Banner on July 5 at the Walk for LOVE™, one of the major events that took place during the 142nd Shriners International Imperial Session that was hosted in Tampa, Florida.

Thomas Coffey, a former University of South Florida guitar professor, is Danielle’s guitar teacher. She is his first student with a prosthetic arm. “It could be a challenge, but to see a person who is so willing to practice and do what it takes to learn is just really wonderful,” Coffey said.

JoAnne Kanas is Shriners Hospitals for Children corporate director of orthotics and prosthetics, and whose office is located at Shriners International headquarters in Tampa. As such, she is especially privy to the state-of-the-art prostheses and tremendously skilled personnel in the Tampa Shriners Hospital’s Pediatric Orthotic and Prosthetic Services – Southeast, LLC department, which she claims is probably one of the busiest of its kind in the country. “They are a fabulous department, a wonderful group, and they make a lot of orthotic and prosthetic devices,” she said.

Danielle is just simply grateful for the top-notch care and heartfelt concern for her well-being that she has received at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa, which specializes in treating youngsters with orthopaedic conditions, regardless of the families’ ability to pay. “Everyone is so friendly and kind,” she said, adding that Shriners Hospitals has made a huge difference in the way she views her own life. “I know now that there are more people with disabilities in the world, and it’s not just me.”

It’s clear that Danielle’s limb difference makes no difference, and that her no limits attitude inspires her to be a better athlete, student, musician and all around better person. Like many of the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Tampa, she continues to defy the odds, and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

MESSAGEfrom the PRESIDENT

As I sit here in a campground in Pasco, Washington, all the way across the US from home in North Carolina, I am thinking that August is quickly passing, which means that summer is quickly passing, and before we know it Fall will be upon us. With Fall comes a new set of activities. In our case, South Atlantic Shrine Association in September; Jesters in October, and the Fall ceremonial in November. Then the holidays begin and before you know it 2017 is here. The arrival of 2017 means that it is time for the Mid-Winter Meeting of INSHP.

Mark your calendars now. Don’t let these dates get away. Some of this information will be repeated in other places in this issue of the Stallion, but I want to be sure that the information is not overlooked. The meeting will be held on February 3, 4, and 5, 2017 at the Country Inn and Suites at Port Orange, Florida. IMPORTANT: The cutoff date for reservations at the meeting rate of $125/night is Friday, January 6th, 2017. The phone number and other information is included in this issue of the Stallion.

As for the meeting, Friday will be arrival day. The hospitality room will be open Friday afternoon (exact time depends on the arrival time of the NC gang) and into the evening. On Saturday we will begin the activities with a brief business meeting. A tour of the stables and competition facilities will follow. For those who wish to go, we will take a brief tour of Daytona to include the parade route and staging areas. The hospitality room will be open on Saturday night. Sunday is departure day.

The hotel is approximately 16 miles from the parade route (Highway A1A through Daytona Beach), but is only a 10-12 minute ride from the stables. We have also been advised that there are at least six tack and feed stores in the area of the stables. More on those matters at a later date.

Having just completed a journey one way across the US, and with a return trip east ahead of me, I can clearly understand and appreciate that Florida is a long way from home for many of you. I also understand that three trips to Florida in three years doesn’t contribute much of a vacation factor to the journey. But the organization needs an active membership to remain viable. I ask each of you to include the INSHP Mid-Winter Meeting and the 2017 Imperial Session in Daytona Beach, Florida in your plans.

See you in Daytona-Port Orange in February.

Bill Stuckey President

MESSAGEfrom the PAST PRESIDENT

IT’S A NEW YEAR AND WE HAVE NEW FACESBefore everything else, both my lady Sharon and I want to wish every member a merry

Holiday Season and a healthy and prosperous New year. With that said my year is now complete, Imperial is over and we have elected a new slate of officers for INSHP, but I sincerely need to thank everyone who put this year’s program together, and those who attended Imperial with all its heat. Our Hospitality was done by Jack Clapp, Peter Geyer and my lady Sharon who did an outstanding job of beverages and snacks. Our hotel, the Barrymore Hotel Tampa River Walk could not have been more accommodating and Jim Coons at the Florida State Fair Grounds had everything we needed. lulu’s members were out in full with Past Presidents Ill Sir Manny and Ron Haines taking charge of events at the Barn and making sure all ran smoothly.

Originally, we were to have three Temples compete, but due to circumstances beyond all control there was only one Temple, lulu, but they still put on a show and made sure we were in the Parade. INSHP’s Treasurer edward Allen participated by collecting the used oats and depositing them in our Chuck Wagon — Thanks edward. We had even planned individual competition to demonstrate your skills or those of your family members with ribbons for all. But no one was there.

We have now elected our new officers, but are short fourth and fifth Vice Presidents. Ill Sir Gary Davis has agreed to take over as editor of the Stallion after this issue. We passed the changes to our By-laws which Ill Sir Allan Ake, Past President, has worked so hard on to bring them up to date. And speaking of Ill Sir Allan, a huge thank you for the job you have done as editor of the Stallion.

It is disappointing when you ask Nobles for help, they give it to you, but there is a lack of attendance by everyone else. I know Florida is a long distance for everyone to travel. Hell, lulu traveled over 2,400 miles to bring horses and take them home again this year. Thanks to IS Bill Morwald and Noble Dale estus who made the trek with lu lu horses to make sure INSHP had an equine presence this year. Imperial will be in Daytona, Florida for the next two years and we need to make a showing if we want to continue to get the support of Imperial for our stabling and competition. Who this year was filmed and shown on the Hospital and News reports? The Horses and as always they were a great hit. If only there were more!

last year I put together an email list to try and get in contact with everyone prior to the Stallion being published and did I get a surprise. About 20% of the addresses were incorrect. Do you know there are two Temples that are members INSHP and that all their members are single and no one has a email address? Now I know they are not in metropolis areas, but how do you communicate? Smoke Signals or Telegraph? We need to share with each other what is happening at our individual Temples and not just in the Stallion when it is published. Wouldn’t it be nice to know if one of our Past President’s were sick or while a Noble was on vacation there was a Horse Patrol Trail Ride going on at his planned destination when he and his family were there. With that in mind our new editor Ill Sir Gary and I want to put together an accurate email list where members can share information with all of us. you know just passing it along so everyone knows all the time between issues of the Stallion. Pictures, places, events and news. To do this we need you to take a minute and send me your email address. My email address is [email protected] what’s yours? It’s a simple idea, but maybe it will get us all together more often than once or twice a year. Please don’t just think about it, contact me and I thank you all for all your help.

One other item which was brought up at our meeting was US Ride Insurance Services. This is a National Roadside Assistance Program which one of our members asked me to look into and it appears to be a great program. Check them out on www.usrider.org or 800-844-1409, by using our organization International Shrine Horse Patrols when call, and you will receive a discount when you purchase the coverage. This program will be in effect for the rest of this year, but we are working on being recognized in their network.

BIll STUCkEy, current INSHP President, was raised in Hiram lodge #40 in Raleigh, NC in May, 1971. He served as Master of that lodge in 1979. He took the york Rite degrees and joined the Sudan Temple in 1971. During the mid to late 1970’s, a third Temple was created in Raleigh, NC, Bill’s hometown, but because he was already a member of Sudan, he had the option of remaining a member of that Temple, an option he exercised. Bill became a member of the Sudan Horse Patrol in 1995 and later served as the Captain of that Unit.

He and his wife, officially named Sara, but better known as “Chuck”, hosted the INSHP hospitality room in Charlotte in 2012.
