Hello fellow members.. I hope all is well and that your Mustang will soon be on the road. We have had a great winter season topped off with a 3rd win at WOW for best club display. A special thanks to all involved in helping at WOW. Our annual Spring Fling was a hoot and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. A 2007 Events Calendar will be available soon. See this newsletter or our website (www.abmustang.com) for all the info.

Mustang – A Continuation or Reenactment ?

The new 2005-07 Mustangs have turn out to be a huge success for Ford. Sales figures and profit margins are very important to Ford in these troubled times. The new Mustang is one of their star performers. The classic 60’s retro styling is not the only thing the new Mustangs have in common with the original 1964 design. Should we think of the new Mustang as a continuation model or as a rebirth and maybe a reenactment? Could this could be good or a bad thing?

History Lesson – 1964 - 1966In 1964 Mustang owners purchased a unique automobile concept. Ford took a proven but boring design then (1) crafted a sexy body style (2) created a brand new market segment for the car (3) then went out and took the automotive industry by storm. The marketing plan was a classic “bait and hook” approach. Ford deliberately offered the Mustang at a price everyone could afford and then offered a long option list to please the up market buyer. Mustang owners could not resist upgrading their cars with all sorts of factory and aftermarket options. Novel things like a tissue dispenser for the lofty price of $3.95 or speed control for the princely sum of $71.40 were offered to provide additional creature comforts. For the audiophile there was the mind blowing “Studio Sound Sonic System” and an AM / Stereo Sonic 8 Track player for less than $100.00. The performance enthusiast had to look no further than a factory triple 2bbl setup for $219.50 or the wickedly sexy quadruple Weber intake setup for only $695.00. Hey Man.. Mustang’s were groovy and both men and women lined up to buy one.

Without competition from GM and Chrysler the Mustang sold brilliantly in its first 3 years of production. However, once competition arrived in 1967 Ford was forced to offer more power, more features and a very competitive price. To maintain the enthusiasm Ford developed new models like the Mach 1 and Boss 302 /429. Unfortunately sales figures continued to shrink from 1967 – 1973 and Ford knew time was running out.

By the end of 1973 the classic style Mustangs were out of fashion. People, like my poor cousin Brian, sold their 428 Cobra Jets for Pinto wagons or Mustang II’s. Shelby’s were becoming difficult to sell and the prices for vintage Mustang’s were depressed.

Cont’d…

Norm “The Pres”

Fast Forward to 2005-07The new Mustang was marketed in exactly the same way as the original Mustang. Ford offered an inexpensive base model with many optional packages available from either the factory, the dealer or the aftermarket industry.

New Ford customers and loyal Mustang alumni have rushed out to buy the new 2005 / 07 Mustang’s. Without any serious competition from GM or Chrysler sales have been booming. The new Shelby’s are selling for $20,000 over retail, the new California Special is selling well and new specialty models are planned for 2008/2009. The downside to this retro success is history is repeating itself as both GM and Chrysler have announced they will market competitive models. Both the Camaro and the Challenger are formidable designs with great potential. Ford may not be the performance leader in 2008.

Is this starting to look and sound like 1967 again. The questions you have to ask yourself are:

Will the 2008 and later Mustang suffer the same fate as the 1967-1973 Mustang?

Will prices for used 2005-07 Shelby’s and California Specials drop once the new Challenger’s and Camaro’s hit the market?

Will insurance companies start rating the new muscle cars out of business?

Could this be deja vous?

Will I be able to afford a Shelby after all!?

I may have to send a letter to GM and Chrysler congratulating them for a job well done! Oh crap.. Does this mean I have to take back my comments about Buick’s in our last newsletter !!

See you at the meetings and on the road. Drive smart...

By Jim Bateman

Part 5 Continued from the February 2007 edition …

The color that this GTCS will be painted is Lime Gold Ford Paint Code “I” . I will use a HVLP gravity feed paint gun, which means High Volume Low Pressure with the paint cup over the gun handle. The air pressure I use at the tip is 6 to 8 pounds per square inch and I hold the gun directly in front of my target and spray in a slow constant motion, then I overlap the next coat in the same method. The idea is to cover the entire car with a uniform coating of color with no runs, drips, smiles, or oh no’s on the finished surface. The color coat will also usually flash dry as I clean the gun and load it with the Clearcoat and activator. The paint products have come a long way since these cars graced theshowroom floors at your local Ford dealer. The products and equipment are designed for both safety and environment protection, hence the availability of full face masks with oxygen and the HVLP paint guns that allow more product to hit the project and not float in the air, the new paint booths also have improved

significantly and the most recent innovation was being used at Sema last year as Chip Foose introduced a booth with the exhaust in the floor, making it safe enough to paint and little dust. The next area that we will be painting is the engine compartment. We begin by sanding or scuffing the etching primer and looking at any imperfections that are in the panels we have to repair. The top of the aprons required some minor attention as the welds were just a little rougher that the factory spot welds were, so we cleaned this up with a skim coat of body fill. (not always a dirty word). We then re-sprayed the etching primer on the repaired area and applied the sealer primer

to the entire bay. We decided to use a black Acrylic Enamel Paint for the engine bay as I can flatten the gloss down with a product additive called flattening Agent. The final result we are looking for is a satin black finish as close to the factory original as possible. The difference between acrylic enamel and enamel is the acrylics, a plastic that sets up with a hardener or activator (again safety is focus).

Well when we stand back and look at the color contrast of the Lime Gold undercarriage and the Satin Black engine compartment, theretruly is a beautiful looking project to date. We can now stand back and admire the color on the car, then imagine what the completely painted finished project will look like we shake our heads and return to reality and begin the process of applying the Lime Gold top coat to the trunk, and interior floor area. The interior roof of the Cal Spec cannot be forgotten, as you can imagine over the past 30 years

13

California Dreamin continued …there have been people sitting in the car and as we are all a high percentage of water, the humidity will rise and the headliner will absorb moisture that is produced and the metal will have condensation on it many times over. This means that when we think about painting the interior for appearance we also must think about protection, so we paint the roof in a base coat clear coat finish to cover all exposed metal. This is a good practice as even if you cannot see the panel it needs to be covered to prevent corrosion. We decided to paint the door jambs and other areas that were covered with panels to ensure all metal has a coating. The next application in the interior and truck area is for

the body sealant on all the areas that we welded and seams that we do not want any air to penetrate. This body sealant is applied using an air gun that leaves a fine consistent quantity of material over the seams on the floors and panel joints. The body sealant is capable of having primer and paint sprayed over it after application. There is an error some people make with primer when they are patching or repainting areas of their cars, and this is the fact that primer in a spray can is lacquer based and has no acrylics, and when dried is very porous. This means, it is generally not a good idea to spray bare metal with just a lacquer based primer and then drive your car in the rain and expect it not to rust. We then mask off the under carriage and the engine compartment and complete the application of the Lime Gold paint in the trunk, wheel wells and interior of the car. Now it finally looks like we are making major advances in a forward direction, but there is a lot left to do. Installing the suspension will become our next adventureas we need to have the car on all four wheels to attach the bodypanels.

We will now introduce a wonderful method of painting parts, Powder Coating. This is a very strong and durable paint that is applied in a very different way that conventional paint. The science of this painting method is that the paint product contains metal and when a electromagnet charge is applied to the metal part the paint will stick in all areas that conduct. This paint is then heated up to 450 degrees F to basically melt it to the part. The result is a almost bullet proof coating that is resistant to rock chips and moisture. When we began installing the front suspension we Powder coated all the parts possible to keep them looking new, as this car will be a driver. There is a rainbow of colors available for Powder Coating, and I think I ordered them all. I once read that when you start Powder Coatingparts you will find yourself looking all over the shop to locate things to coat. We actually considered Powder Coating the Dogs dish Red aswe thought it would be a good idea, but the dog did not. The method of heating or baking the paint on the part was accomplished by using an old oven with the racks to hang the parts. The Process usually takes 20 min at a temperature of 450 degrees, it is like waiting for a cake to bake as you can look into the oven and watch the transformation of a plain old part to a brand new durable work of art. There are some parts that we could not Powder Coat as the oven was just not big enough and we took these to a shop that specializes in larger items; the 9 inch differential housing was done this way after we removed all the components from it.

We began to clean, coat and install the front suspension on the car and aligning the parts up best we can to look straight, this will need to professionally aligned in a shop after we have it on the wheels. The rear end will be installed on the rear leaf springs and all bolts torque to specification. This is now making the car very heavy on the rotisserie and it is become very clear we need to have this car on all four wheels ASAP. We completed the rear suspension installation by adding the shocks and does it look nice with the contrast of color. The next suspension parts to go on are the coil springs, this again is a major safety issue and a lot of attention MUST be focused on this part. When you compress a coil spring there is a potential for agrenade like reaction if it should release in an open shop.

Stay tuned, the adventure continues ….

The AMAC Executive extends their regret for the ‘missing’ casino, and would like to say thank you to all the attendees who were such good sports about it. The only explanation we got from Canuck is that the paperwork didn’t get passed on when our rep went on vacation. We will be sure to book with a different company next year. The food was fabulous and the prizes were awesome, kudos to Wade & Sharon for their hard work!

The winter meeting for the International Mustang Meet was held on March 10 in Great Falls, Montana. Russ and Teresa Penner and myself met three of the Edmonton club members in Calgary and cruised down to Great Falls, making a pit stop in Lethbridge (actually Coaldale) to pick up another member of the Edmonton Club. Keeping with tradition, a small scale social was held Friday night.

The official meeting got underway at 1400 hours on Saturday afternoon. With the exception of Regina, Winnipeg, and Bozeman all Clubs were represented. It was good to see the Spokane reps at the meeting. Since Spokane last hosted the International meet, they have bid twice to host the meet again. Both times Spokane was turned down. It was this result that prompted a motion from Spokane that the Host Club for the International would go on a rotational basis. Having been in the exact situation, when representing Calgary a few years ago, I fully agreed with the motion, as did most other Clubs and the motion was carried. Even though it is just a bid, there is a lot of work that goes into the preparation which could be better spent on the actual show. Once your turn comes up, the host Club will have the opportunity to “pass”, should they have a valid reason.

Great Falls gave a report on the 2007 Meet, and things seem to be progressing very well. Great Falls is a fairly small club andwill be looking for outside volunteers. So if you would like to offer your services to help out, email one of the guys from Great Falls and let them know the time frame you would be available.

Despite many rumors, there are still rooms available at the host Hotel as of March 12, so don’t delay; book today !!!!!!!.Regards, Wayne HumeAMAC International Rep

International Winter Meeting 2007 – Part Deux

Wayne has certainly covered off most of the points raised at the Winter Meeting, so I will keep this short. To add a few other items of note, there were approximately 125 pre-registrants for this years’ International “free room” draw that was made at the end of the meeting. The free room for the weekend was won by a long-time active Mustanger (and his family) from Saskatoon. Congratulations Al!!

The 2008 International, the 29th, has been awarded to the Saskatoon Club. They made a very nice presentation, and seem to be well on their way to putting in a strong effort to make everyone’s visit in September 2008 a memorable one. Their early plans include having Drag Racing on the Friday afternoon (similar to what Edmonton did), as well as having Autocross on Sunday, as well as many other activities. You will be able to catch their “update” presentation this September in Great Falls.

Great Falls is well on their way with the upcoming International, and it should be a great time.

To add to the planned rotation of hosting future Internationals, here is what the tentative schedule would look like. Keep in mind it is not cast in stone, and a Club can trade with the next Club (on the same side of the border) if they feel they are notquite ready.

Thanks, Russ PennerAMAC International Rep

Bob has made significant modifications to the car twice over the years. First with the addition of the Cervini Hood (pop off style), and with the flashy lightning bolt paint job. Recently the second restoration project included the rear custom built hard top cover, splitting the hood down centre so it opens like double doors, a complete redo of the interior, the addition of Saleen racing pedals, and a 2400 watt stereo so you can hear it coming. Although I’m guessing without the stereo you would still here this little Cobra from a ways off!

There is still a few mods in the works for this great car, Bob plans to install electric actuators operated by remote control (every guys dream)! The RC will open the hood, doors, windows, trunk and operate the antennae.

While I was wondering around down at the World of Wheels, I spied an very sporty ’87 Mustang GT Convertible. I quickly discovered that it belonged to AMAC Member Bob Found. I made a point of visiting with Bob to have a chat about his car. Bob bought the car off the lot in Edmonton in 1987, he said he really could not afford it at the time, but fell in love and had to have it, and I know we can all relate!

Bob raced the car for many years, but this pony has retired and is now a street driver and show car. It has won many awards including Best of Class, Best of Show and Fastest ET at the 1997 Spokane International Mustang Meet. It also won Outstanding Mild Convertible at this year’s World of Wheels.

And the best part – this is not a trailer queen! Bob uses this car as a daily driver whenever the weather cooperates!
