I ’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but the older I get the faster time seems to go by! We are over half way through my year as GNC President. You, my friends, have made it a pleasure so far…keep up the good work! Your support and kind words help more than you know. We are now into that time of year when we must start thinking about what comes next. By now you have met our Nominating Committee for 2019-2020. They will be talking to members who they think will be good candidates to fill open positions, both on the Board and our committees. Please be receptive if you are approached by one of these brave women. Only gentle arm twisting will be permitted! Our club is somewhat unique in that we have a large membership run entirely by volunteers. Many organizations our size employ paid staff, but we have successfully been able to avoid going down that path so far and I hope we can continue to do so. We can only do that through a strong commitment from our members to volunteer their time and talents to conduct the business of Gainesville Newcomers Club. Over the past year we have made some changes to the size and alignments of several of our committees in order to spread the workload and provide backup to the jobs requiring more time. We know that our volunteers have lots of commitments and activities outside of GNC. But, I am not saying anything new when I say, “you only get out of an organization what you put into it”. That is so true in our club. The best way to meet other members and make new friends is to jump in and get to work. No experience is needed. Longevity is not required so our new members are especially encouraged to volunteer. Even though I said we are midway through this year, we still have a lot of exciting things yet to come. Spring and Summer are right around the corner. The warming temps, the flowers and sunshine make me feel good. I look forward to working and laughing and having fun with all of you.

Until next time, Janet

Luncheon Cancellation / No Show: Should you need to cancel, please do so no later than midnight on the Wednesday prior to the Luncheon. This can be done by calling 678-720-4123 and leaving a voicemail for the luncheon committee. The Chattahoochee Country Club charges for all reservations made after the final count is given. As noted in the bylaws, if your cancellation is not received in time, it will be necessary to pass that charge to you. All "no shows" will be billed for their lunch. We appreciate your understanding.

B ylaws Thanks to our membership for approving our proposed Bylaw changes at the January luncheon meeting. One change reduces the time commitment of a member becoming Vice President from three years to two. The Vice President automatically becomes President the following year but no longer assumes the role of Parliamentarian in year three. The Vice President will now act as Parliamentarian. The qualifications for a member to accept the position of Vice President include serving on a committee for at least one year without the requirement to serve as a committee chair. Also approved was the option to implement online voting in cases where the Board determines it to be appropriate. The updated Bylaws are posted on our website as a submenu under Information. New Projector Those attending the January luncheon may have noticed that we used our new projector for the Bylaw discussion and the program. The high-lumens machine allows us to project clearly in a room such as the country club dining room with so much outside light. We are currently training several club members in the setup and operation of the projector in order to use it at various GNC events. Cheryl Usher, our Webmaster, will keep the projector in her possession. Contact Cheryl for information. Nominating Committee for the 2019-2020 Board Beverly Collier and Gay Lull, appointed by the board, will represent the Board. During the February luncheon meeting the three women elected to the Nominating Committee were Cheryl Usher, Pat DeNote, and Marilyn Valent.

T he GNC April Luncheon speaker will be Pat Blair, former Chief Calligrapher at the White House. While working there over a period of fourteen years, she served Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Pat’s presentation at GNC, which includes slides of her work, will give us a behind the scenes look into how calligraphy enhances menus, invitations, guest books, place cards, and Christmas cards at the White House. Her other official duties there included program and tour book production, certificate design, and addressing protocol matters for the White House. Pat also designed a new china pattern for President and Mrs. George W. Bush. Pat has held various leadership positions in professional calligraphy and lettering organizations, been included in several publications, and taught classes and workshops. Retired since August, 2018, she still enjoys sharing her passion for this practical and elegant art form.

B everly grew up on a farm in Cairo, GA, with her parents, sister Vivian and brother Stan. She could and did drive a John Deere tractor prior to getting her driver’s license, and she is a pro at planting and harvesting crops of corn, tobacco, peanuts and cotton in the steamy hot Georgia Summer sun. She is not a member of the Gardening Interest Group in case you were wondering. After earning her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Valdosta State College, Beverly taught high school mathematics for nine years and was middle school assistant principal for three years. In 1986 Beverly earned a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership at UGA. For the next 24 years she worked in leadership positions in the Gwinnett County School System. In 2010 she retired after a 36-year career in education. Beverly met and married Hale Spiegelberg, a true rodeo cowboy/ big game mountain hunter from Cody, Wyoming. They were married on a snowmobile in West Yellowstone, Montana, in a 35 degree below zero snowstorm on December 31, 1990. While Beverly worked in education, Hale created and developed a medical software company Document Plus Technologies. Based in Johns Creek, GA, their business has been used in medical clinics throughout the United States for over 30 years. In

addition to working together they love to visit their condo on Ft. Walton Beach and travel to exotic locations in and out of the country. Daughter Kim is an elementary school teacher in Gwinnett County Public Schools. Her husband Sergeant Major Kevin Ashe is currently serving a nine month tour of duty in Afghanistan. The oldest granddaughter is a senior at the Coastal College of Georgia in Brunswick while the younger granddaughter is a sophomore at East Jackson High School where she is active in choral and drama play productions. After Beverly’s retirement she and Hale moved onto

the lake in Hall County. Beverly joined GNC in 2012.

She has been active on numerous committees and is

currently serving as GNC Vice President. She really

enjoys living in Gainesville and thinks GNC should

be on the top 10 list of reasons for living in Hall

County!

T he human heart has two main parts: the right ventricle receives blood into the heart and the left ventricle carries blood to other parts of the body. The heart cannot function without both ventricles. Let’s take a look at the heart of GNC. GNC has two main purposes: to welcome newcomers and to be of service to the community. Think of the right ventricle of GNC as the ventricle receiving friendships, social activities, fun and

adventurous special interest group events, and the wonderful monthly luncheons with a wide variety of programs. Now, consider the left ventricle of GNC carrying services to Hall County by the arteries and veins better known as the Community Service Events.

For this article, let’s explore the left ventricle of our GNC heart. H Helping Helping others in Hall County less fortunate than we are. E Effort It takes lots and lots of effort (work) to organize and deliver a multitude of services to deserving charities. A Attitude An attitude of caring and concern for others is essential to maintain and increase the services of our community involvement. R Reality We must accept the reality that a great number of Hall County residents need the basics of shelter, clothing, food, and medical services. T Time It takes time to organize and deliver all the services of our Community Program. So, the bottom line is this: Is your Heart working for GNC? If you suffer from a weak heart,

strengthen your heart by getting involved with GNC Community Projects.

“Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.” By John Heywood

The GNC Triple Crown Party, will be held June 8 at Marina Bay Clubhouse. The party will feature the horse races, games,

specialty cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Too much fun to miss so put it on your calendar! Due to

space limitations, the tickets will be sold, on a first come first served basis, to GNC members only

(limit 2). Watch for more details and the date the tickets will go on sale.

GNC regrets the passing of former longtime member, Marcia Price. Marcia was a member of Gainesville Newcomers Club for eighteen years and is remembered by those who knew her as "a leader whose generosity of spirit was infectious and effective." Her funeral was January 26 at Saint Paul's Catholic Church in Cleveland, GA. (See: Marcia Price Obituary ) Aleta Prebianca died in her sleep on Friday, February 15. Aleta had been an active member of our club for several years. She had many GNC friends, some of whom she joined for the February outing of the Antique Explorers interest group.

Services for Aleta were held Tuesday, February 19, 11am at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville. For additional information, please use the following link to her obituary.

Storyteller, actress, English teacher, historian and award-winning volunteer, Carol Cain donned her Rosie the Riveter costume and persona to entertain and educate our members about women working on the home front to support our troops during WWII. Carol sang her way into our hearts as she shared character stories of eight women working as mechanics, riveters, crane operators and bus drivers. These women, their stories and the fact that so many were unwilling to go back to being homemakers in 1944, opened new opportunities for all women in this country. If your mother was a Rosie “who did her part to free a man for the war effort” by working in a man’s production job, rolled bandages for the American Red Cross, or participated in a Victory Garden or other war effort, you may be eligible to be a Rosebud. Contact the American Rosie the Riveter Association for more information.

Blue Star Mothers Collection in March Since 1942, Blue Star Mothers (mothers of deployed soldiers) have worked together to send simple food items, toiletries, letters and notes of encouragement, etc. to soldiers who are in active service. In March, GNC will be collecting some items for the 350 Georgia soldiers who are currently deployed. If you care to share they are requesting individually wrapped nuts, individual oatmeal, Easter Candy that won’t melt, money for postage to mail these items. The soldiers appreciate all of the items sent, but really look forward to the cards and letters of encourage-ment, and pictures drawn by children. This is not part of our regular monthly collection.

Little Steps thank you note from Danielle Nicole Latlippe

Little Steps just received a very generous donation from all the lovely ladies in The Gainesville Newcomers Club! Our strength as an organization has so much to do with the community we are surrounded by! I can’t thank GNC enough for the surprise drop off this afternoon! Thank you all for your awesome support! Little Steps Community Daycare is free, temporary childcare that provides parents with quality childcare while they are searching for employment, interviewing for jobs, awaiting eligibility for government sponsored childcare, attending mandated classes, or waiting for their first paycheck. This service has been very successful in bridging the gap for families who are waiting on the aid of government funding or finding employment that offers higher wages.

M embers of the Gardening Interest Group are wonderful ladies who enjoy gardening and/or just want to learn how to best grow plants in Georgia. We go to plant nurseries, members’ homes and other garden related locations. Some of our members are master gardeners and can help answer questions and resolve plant issues. The group always goes to lunch so we can spend time getting to know each other outside our gardens. Interest group leader, Beverly Gilbert, is a master gardener and host of the Hall

County Master Garden booth for the butterfly release at Wilshire Park, May 19, 1 to 4 p.m. It is a fun afternoon and everyone gets to release a butterfly. Great for adults and kids. Come join the group and have some

outdoor fun. Spring is a great time to be

outdoors enjoying the gentle Georgia

sunshine. Our group welcomes the lady

who enjoys the beauty that flowers and

nature have to offer.

Pureed Pear Dressing: 1 cup fresh pear, peeled, cored and diced ¼ cup vinegar (rice or white balsamic) 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice 1 Tbsp. maple syrup

¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (or avocado oil) Salt and pepper to taste Directions:

1. Place pear chunks, vinegar, mustard, lemon juice and maple syrup in a blender or food processor and pulse until smooth.

2. Add the oil in a steady stream into the opening while blender is running. Process until emulsified. Add salt and pepper and mix again.
