Distinguished Alumnus Awards and Faculty Awards were presented on the occasion. Dr. Ashok Dalwai, IAS, Additional Secretary, DAC, Govt. of India, was the Chief Guest. Sh.     Dr. Ashok Dalwai, in his special lecture spoke about the strategies in millets production, consumption and utiliza-tion for doubling farmers income. He stressed on the need to create demand besides doubling the millet pro-duction. Prior to this, in his inaugural address Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR, cited recent developments at the Institute such as popularization of millet production tech-nologies and millet value added products including entre-preneur development and backward integration strate-gies developed. Dr. Parthasarathi and Dr. Praveen Rao also mentioned about the importance of millets as health food and the need to promote them for food and nutri-tional security.

    On this occasion, IIMR felicitated the previous Directors: Drs. UR Murty, BS Rana, N Seetharama and former Principal Scientists: Drs. Pankaja Reddy, BB Reddy, MH Rao, S Indira and S Audilakshmi in recognition of their services. IIMR presented the Awards to the Millets farm-

    ers from various states across the country, in apprecia-tion of their services rendered in continuing with the mil-let cultivation, and millet food entrepreneurs for their commercialization and promotional activities. The IIMR also honoured Best Scientific, Technical and Administrative staff for the year 2016 in the following categories: Scientific Category: Drs. Sujay Rakshit (Best Publications), CV Ratnavathi (Externally Funded Projects), M Elangovan (Best Institutional services), KN Ganapathy (Best Young Scientist) B Venkatesh Bhat and HS Talwar (Scientific and Logistic excellence) and B Dayakar Rao, (Overall Performance). Technical Cate-gory: Smt. Vishala Devender (Field & Lab) and Sh. J Bhagvantham (Best Institutional Services), Administra-tive Category: Smt. G Saraswathi and Sh. G Chimanlal (Institutional Services). The dignitaries on dias honoured these individuals with a citation and certificate.

  • Inauguration of Nutri-cereal Innovation centre Dr. Ashok Dalwai, IAS, Additional Secretary, DAC, Govt. of India inaugurated the newly built Seed Storage and Lab facility named as Nutri-cereal Innovation centre at IIMR on 9 February, 2017in the presence of Ds. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR, Sh. C Parthasarathi, Principal Secretary (Agriculture), Govt. of Telangana and Dr. V Praveen Rao, Vice-Chancellor PJSTSAU, Hyderabad,

    Smt. V. Usha Rani, DG, MANAGE, and Dr. Kalpana Sas-try, Director (A), NAARM, Hyderabad. This building was completed in 8 months time.

    Exhibition on Millet products An exhibition on Millets, facilitating to display various agro based food processing technologies developed by public sector, private sector and NGOs was organized at Indian Institute of Millets Research during the Foundation Day on 09 February, 2017. Dr. Ashok Dalwai, IAS, Addi-tional Secretary, DAC, Govt. of India inaugurated the Exhibition, where more than 30 stalls exhibited their tech-

    nologies and millet based health food products. IIMR also set up a stall showcasing millet germplasm and mil-let value added ReadytoEat and Ready-to-Cook prod-ucts. The importance of sorghum and millets as health and nutritious food was explained to the visitors and the relevant literature was distributed. Millets Germplasm Field Day and One-day Training on Digitalization of Millet Genetic Resources Management System

    Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) organized Millets Germplasm Field Day & One-day Training on Digitalization of Millet Genetic Resources Management

    System during 1-2 February 2017 at Hyderabad. A total of 60 participants attended this programme which in-cludes 12 from All India Coordinated Small Millets Im-provement Project (AICSMIP), 3 Scientists from NBPGR, 10 scientists, 10 technical and 10 research scholars and 15 skilled assistants from IIMR.

    This programme facilitated the millets researchers to fa-miliarize with the available diverse millets germplasm such as pearl millet, finger millet, foxtail millet, proso mil-let, barnyard millet, kodo millet and little millet and enable them to make desirable trait specific germplasm selec-tion for utilization in their crop improvement program. During rabi 2016-17, IIMR regenerated 10,034 acces-sions received from National Genebank, NBPGR, New Delhi; AICRP on Small Millets, Bengaluru; Department of Plant Genetic Resources, Tamil Nadu Agricultural Uni-versity (TNAU), Coimbatore; and others sources.

    Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad briefed achievements of millet ge-netic resources management Unit at IIMR and the impor-tance of millets crops. The field day was inaugurated by the chief guest Dr. KS Varaprasad, Former Director, In-dian Institute of Oilseeds Research (IIOR) and delivered inaugural address on Plant Genetic Resources Free flow to Benefit Sharing. The Guest of Honour Dr. Prab-hakar, Project Coordinator, All-India Coordinated Small Millets Improvement Project, Bengaluru complimented the sorghum and millet genetic resources management at IIMR especially the database management and GIS mapping. Other guests Dr. B. Sarathbabu, Officer In-charge, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (RS) Hyderabad, also emphasized on the importance of millets germplasm. The valedictory session was attended by Drs. Ganeshram, Head DPGR, TNAU and Om Veer Singh, PC, AICRP (Pearl Millet) Jodhpur.

    This programme was sponsored by National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi under Consortium Research Platform on Agro-biodiversity and coordinated at IIMR by Dr M Elangovan, Dr Avinash Sin-gode and Mrs. A Annapurna.

  • Training Programmes on Empowering mil-let stakeholders through Processing & Com-mercialization of Value-added technologies Indian Institute of Millets Research organized a two-day training programme entitled Empowering millet stake-holders through Processing & Commercialization of Value-added technologies during 13-14 February, 2017, for Maharashtra farmers and during 20-21 February, 2017, for Karnataka farmers under NFSM project. A total of 32

    Maharashtra participants and 34 Karnataka Farmers from different districts participated in this programme. Dr B Dayakar Rao, Course Director, IIMR presented the over-view of sorghum value chain project and experiences and its impact. Guest lectures were delivered by Mr. Sai Krishna Popuri MD, Fountainhead Foods Pvt Ltd. Hy-derabad, Dr. Bhaskarachary, Scientist-D, NIN, Hydera-bad, Dr. K Uma Maheswari, Principal Scientist, Hydera-bad besides IIMR Scientists Drs. C Aruna and PG Pad-maja, Dr. Sujayb Rakshit. The other topics covered dur-ing these lectures were: Crop improvement in Millets; Nu-tritional value of millets; Establishment of Millet Process-ing Unit Learning experiences; Post-Harvest Technolo-gies; Product development technologies. Demonstration and operation of primary processing equipment was done by Mr. Thomas Nicodemus, Ex-ICRISAT, Mrs. Vishala Devender, Ms. Sudha and Ms. Arlene Christina. A. Kiran-mai and other staff demonstrated the preparation of reci-pes from millets Drs. Sangappa C. Deepika, and Avinash Singode, Scientists were the course coordinators and facilitator for this event was Mrs. Vishala AD.

    Farmers - Scientists interface meet Farmers and ICAR-IIMR - Hyderabad scientists interface meet was held in Ippepally Village, Zaheerabad Mandal, Sangareddy District, Telangana State on 25 February, 2017. Scientists from IIMR Hyderabad Dr. Ch. Sashid-har Reddy and Dr. B. Subbarayudu, suggested the farm-ers to adopt improved millet cultivars, and also explained production technology on Sorghum and other millets. They emphasized the growing demand for millets be-cause of their nutritional value and health benefits. They also answered many queries of farmers pertaining to crop production and protection technologies and marketing of their produce. Mr. Pradeep, AEO, Department of Agricul-

    ture, Government of Telangana, Zaheerabad facilitated this farmers meet. More than 150 farmers participated in this meet.

    Training programme on emasculation in Sorghum Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad organ-ized one day in-house training programme on emascu-lation in Sorghum for all out-sourced persons, who are

    working at IIMR on 25 February, 2016. Total 37 persons undertook this training. This programme was conducted at GTC and Rabi Fields of IIMR, under the guidance of Drs. Suajy Rakshit, C Aruna, KN Ganapathy, B Ama-sidha and C Deepika. Sh. Vilas Aghav Dnyanoba, farm superintendent coordinated this training programme.

    Swiping machine installed for Cashless transactions

    In the light of Digital India campaign and ensuing ICAR directives towards implementation of cashless transac-tions in the Institutes, IIMR- Hyderabad introduced Point

  • of Sale (POS) swiping machines on 2 February, 2017. The State Bank of Hyderabad has issued one POS ma-chine to IIMR, out of our indent for 5 machines. The re-maining POS units will be delivered by the bank in due course. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR formally inaugu-rated the operations through the new POS machine in the presence of Sh. AN Murty, FAO, Sh. SK Singh, AO, Sh. P Jayaprakash, DDO and others. Having a debit or credit card one can feel free from burden of carrying cash. Also risk of theft goes down to zero as it needs a PIN to carry out transactions. All these payments are made through bank account. Ph. D Awarded

    Drs. C Deepika and R Swarna, sci-entists of IIMR received their Ph.D. degrees at a Convocation ceremony organized at IARI, New Delhi on 9 February, 2017. Congratulations to both. Health awareness camp M/s. Sai Sanjeevini Hospitals, Hyderabad organized a Free Health Awareness Camp at IIMR on 3 February, 2017. One physician and three assistants organized the health camp. The hospital staff conducted various tests like ECG, 2D Echo, Blood test, Sugar test. The team also distributed the necessary medicines to the patients free of cost. Most of the IIMR employees participated in the camp and utilized the services. Millet stalls IIMR Stall at XIII Agricultural Science Congress, Bangalore ICAR IIMR, organized an exhibition stall during XIII Agri-

    cultural Science Congress organized at UAS, GKVK, Ban-galore from 21 to 24 February, 2017. More than 1500 farmers and dignitaries from various organizations across the state and India visited the stall. Millet Value added technologies were demonstrated to farmers, entrepre-neurs and delegates during the ASC. Millet Stall at IIOR, Hyderabad ICAR IIMR, organized an exhibition stall during Farmers Dayorganized at Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hy-derabad on 24 February, 2017. More than 100 farmers

    besides about 50 dignitaries visited the stall. The visi-tors showed keen interest especially on the innovative products developed from sorghum and other millets. The importance of millets as health and nutritious food was explained to the visitors and relevant literature was distributed. They also tasted the millet foods, served during lunch and appreciated its quality. Dr. Sangappa and his team coordinated the IIMR stall activities.

    Monitoring of rabi sorghum FLD trials in Maharashtra Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scientist, IIMR along with scientists of AICRP-Sorghum, Rahuri visited six

    FLD farmers fields on 14 February, 2017 in Tambhere village, Tal-Rahuri, Dist-Ahmednagar in Maharashtra where Phule Suchitra and CSV 29R along with local Maldandi and Dagadi were demonstrated. The Full Package Demo (FPD) plot with CSV 29R was also vis-ited in which recommended practices could not be maintained fully due to submergence of the field. How-ever, the better crop growth and bigger panicle size than the farmers practice (FP) was observed.

    On the next day, Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Sci-entist, IIMR along with scientists of AICRIP-Sorghum Parbhani visited twelve FLD farmers on 15 February, 2017 in Manoli village, Tal- Manwat, Dist-Parbhani where Parabhani Moti along with local variety, Dagadi and maldandi was demonstrated. The Full Package Demo (FPD) plot with CSV 29R was also visited and observed the better crop growth and bigger size panicle than the farmers practice (FP). The farmers were happy with its performance and are expecting 30-40% higher yield than local one.   • with scientists of AICRP-Sorghum, Tandur visited a few FLD farmers fields on 20 February, 2017 in Allapur vil-lage, Mandal- Basheerabad, Dist-Vikarabad in Telangana where CSV 29R along with local Maldhandi and Dagadi were demonstrated. Better crop growth and bigger panicle size than the local cultivars grown by the farmers was ob-served. This visit was also covered by local news media.

    Hands-on training for agricultural Officers trainees of NIPHM A hands-on training was organized for 30 agricultural offi-cer trainees from NIPHM, Hyderabad during their visit to IIMR, Hyderabad on 6 February, 2017. The visitors were briefed about our research activities and improved millets production technologies and millets-based food products. Dr. Rajendra Chapke, Principal Scientist, IIMR presented orientation about IIMR research and development activi-ties including improved millets cultivation. Dr. Harip-rasanna explained about technology developed and role of IIMR for increasing the benefits from millets cultivation. They showed deep interest in finger millets cultivation in Kerala and alternative uses of millets including its market-ing. They were also provided with improved package of practices of finger millets. Hands-on training for KVK Officials A hands-on training was organized for nine officials from KVK, Karur, TamilNadu on 10 February, 2017 at IIMR, Hyderabad. Exposure to the KVK officials on latest sor-ghum production practices and preparation of different sorghum food products was given by the IIMR staff in co-ordination with Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scien-tist, IIMR. Promotion

    Recognition

    Dr. HS Talwar, Principal Scientist, IIMR, Co-chaired the session on crop improvement and also made the presen-tation on the status of research in the area of abiotic stresses management in Millets, which was held during Expert consultation meeting on "Management of Abiotic Stress in Agriculture: Roadmap for Future Research and Education", held at NIASM, Baramati on 31 January, 2017.     derabad International Convention centre (HICC) during 21- 25 February, 2017.

    Distinguished Visitors Dr. A Neeraja, Joint Secretary, RKVY, DAC&FW Mrs. A Neeraja, Joint Secretary, Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), Department of Agriculture Cooperation and Farmers Welfare, New Delhi. visited IIMR on 27 February, 2017. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR ex-

    plained her the institutes research activities and on the issues related to promotion of sorghum and millets, and their alternate uses, forage and sweet sorghum as a biofuel crop. Mrs. Neeraja also visited Centre of Excel-lence and other labs. Drs. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Sci-entist coordinated this visits at IIMR.

    Iranian delegation The Agricultural scientists team lead by Dr. Eskandar-Zand, Full Professor & Deputy Minister and Head of AREEO (Agricultural Research, Education & Extension Organization), Tehran, Iran, consisting of Dr. Mozaffari, Chief Advisor & Director-General, AREEO, Tehran, Dr. Ghasem Mohammadinejad, Director, Horticultural Re-search Institute, Kerman, and Dr. Babak Nakhoda, Ag-ricultural Biotechnology Research Institute of Iran, Karaj during their visit to ICRISAT, visited IIMR to know about

  • the sorghum and millets research and value addition ac-tivities at IIMR, on 23 February, 2017. They were briefed on the research, development and millets promotional programmes at the institute and were shown the value-addition activities for millets food popularization. The visit was coordinated by Drs. B Venkatesh Bhat and San-gappa. Entrepreneurs Dr. RK Chaudhary and Sh. SP Singh, Chief executives, Indian Farm Forestry Development Co-operative Ltd (IFFDC), Gurgaon, Haryana visited IIMR on 2 February, 2017. They had a detailed discussion with Dr. Vilas A

    Tonapi, Director, IIMR on the issue of new hybrids and varieties and their seed production, up-scaling the avail-able technologies on sorghum and licensing and commer-cialization. Issues relating to millet health foods, mecha-nism to evolve contracts with the industries were also dis-cussed. Dr. B Dayakar Rao, Principal Scientist also par-ticipated in the discussions. Smt. N Revati Raju, Director, Sanskriti Educational Trust, Kondapur, Hyderabad visited IIMR on 28 February, 2017. She had a detailed discussion with Dr. Vilas A Tonapi,

    Director, IIMR on the issue of new millet food processing technologies. The trust is already serving millets based breakfast and lunch to the children of Sanskriti School at Kondapur. Issues relating to include more millet health foods in their menu and novel ways to mechanize millet

    led by Dr. Dileep kumar Masuthi, Asst. Professor. They visited food lab, quality lab and were briefed about the millets research in IIMR in the seminar hall. This visit at IIMR was coordinated by Dr. B Venkatesh Bhat, Princi-pal Scientist. Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scien-tist, coordinated the visit.

    Visit of PG students from Karnataka Visit of 45 PG students from University of Agriculture and Horticulture Sciences, Shimoga, Karnataka on 7 February, 2017 at IIMR, Hyderabad. They were made aware about research activities on sorghum improve-ment and preparation and processing of different sor-ghum food products. Dr. Rajendra R Chapke, Principal Scientist coordinated the visit. Memorandum of Agreements The following Memorandum of Agreements / Under-standings were signed at ICAR-IIMR during the Month of February, 2017. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director IIMR on behalf of IIMR signed the agreements. Guest Lecture delivered Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Technical Officer (OL) delivered a Guest Lecture on Official Language Implementation: Problems & Solutions to the staff of National Institute of Plant Health Management, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad on 28 February, 2017.
