Children across Middle and West Tennessee
are beginning a new year of learning As our communityrsquos educators work to fill studentsrsquo minds with knowledge kids need your help to bolster their healthy development
I often remember the story of a colleague who visited a childcare center and asked the kids whether theyrsquod had breakfast Only half raised their hands One boy said
ldquoIt wasnrsquot my turnrdquo This is heartbreaking mdash and unacceptable
Our future depends on these children and their hunger must end before learning can begin Thatrsquos why Irsquom so glad to see the growth yoursquove made
possible in Second Harvestrsquos child feeding programs Kids Cafes BackPacks and school pantries are helping students succeed
Many Tennessee school districts are strapped so wersquore getting more requests than ever for these programs We canrsquot progress as a community if our children arenrsquot getting proper nutrition which is why Irsquom so grateful friends like you have stepped up to help feed them
September is Hunger Action Month mdash Feeding Americarsquos yearly nationwide effort to raise awareness about the issue of hunger Wersquore counting on our community to volunteer host food drives and support our efforts

ldquoThe BackPack food is something thatrsquos always consistent for themrdquo Catherine said ldquoFor children who are moving frequently knowing they have the security of the food bag every Friday helps a great deal with feeling more settled and lessens the anxiety they might experiencerdquo

a significant difference Catherine Knowles sees your gifts in action firsthand Shersquos the homeless education program coordinator at Metro Nashville Public Schools
Catherinersquos office reaches about 3400 kids with clothing referrals and Second Harvestrsquos BackPack Program It provides bags of kid-friendly food designed
to last through the weekend when students canrsquot access school meals
For kids who are often staying with family members or friends the BackPack Program lets them maintain some independence
ldquoThe kids are highly motivated and very aware of wanting to provide for themselves and not be a burden on anyone elserdquo Catherine said
With help from friends like you Second Harvest delivers food every week and student volunteers sort and package it for delivery to Nashville area schools
Beyond keeping kids fed the BackPack Program helps struggling families save money for other expenses like rent mdash many live in weekly rental motels
BackPacks also build trust between parents and administrators improve school attendance and provide stability for children in uncertain situations
The security of the food bag every Friday helps a great deal
Monthly donors like Barbara Sullivan arenrsquot just kindhearted and devoted ndash theyrsquore also practical thinkers Autopay is easiest for her and it reduces Second Harvestrsquos overhead meaning more resources for hungry people And in the end thatrsquos what itrsquos all about
ldquoEvery time it pops up on my statement Irsquom reminded how much good work is going on thererdquo Barbara said ldquoThat monthly contribution reminds me that my neighbors are hungry and I am doing a tiny bit to helprdquo
Barbara has been a Second Helpings donor since 2014 and she recently upgraded her monthly gift amount Many of our monthly donors are upgrading to $40 a month in honor of our 40th anniversary At that rate in one year yoursquod provide almost 2000 meals to people in need

News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger
more than 35 years ago Anne Holt news anchor at the time remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the stationrsquos Food 2 Families program
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food Today the program has expanded to local schools teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference Each fall dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food
ldquoIt gave us a priceless interaction with our communitieshellipthe ability to educate our children and educate a whole new generation about hungerrdquo Anne said
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm Because her family grew what they ate they understood the true value of fresh healthy food
Although shersquos never experienced hunger personally Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work mdash the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families is sorted
Anne remembers that in the early days Second Harvest wasnrsquot much more than a closet handing out emergency food Shersquos thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years and she credits the growth to our communityrsquos caring heart
ldquoHunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own mdash we have to work togetherrdquo she says ldquoWe are very fortunate to live in a giving communityrdquo

Many of our donors like to leave us a gift in their wills and wersquore always so grateful to be part of their legacy But few realize therersquos a tax benefit by donating retirement income now If yoursquore 70frac12 and older you can give to Second Harvest directly from your IRA and avoid paying the tax thatrsquos normally due
ldquoWe believe in the work of Second Harvest and decided we wanted to give a larger donation than we had in the pastrdquo said Carol VanKirk ldquoIn talking with our financial advisor we were told that giving
the Required Minimum Distribution from our IRA would be a smart decision for everyonerdquo
ldquoBy sending the money directly from our investment account to Second Harvest we avoided paying any tax because it was not considered income Second Harvest received the full monetary amount with no tax deducted ndash a win-winrdquo

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo
Having enough to eat seems so simple but it is essential mdash especially for growing children We appreciate your partnership

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

Children across Middle and West Tennessee
are beginning a new year of learning As our communityrsquos educators work to fill studentsrsquo minds with knowledge kids need your help to bolster their healthy development
I often remember the story of a colleague who visited a childcare center and asked the kids whether theyrsquod had breakfast Only half raised their hands One boy said
ldquoIt wasnrsquot my turnrdquo This is heartbreaking mdash and unacceptable
Our future depends on these children and their hunger must end before learning can begin Thatrsquos why Irsquom so glad to see the growth yoursquove made
possible in Second Harvestrsquos child feeding programs Kids Cafes BackPacks and school pantries are helping students succeed
Many Tennessee school districts are strapped so wersquore getting more requests than ever for these programs We canrsquot progress as a community if our children arenrsquot getting proper nutrition which is why Irsquom so grateful friends like you have stepped up to help feed them
September is Hunger Action Month mdash Feeding Americarsquos yearly nationwide effort to raise awareness about the issue of hunger Wersquore counting on our community to volunteer host food drives and support our efforts

ldquoThe BackPack food is something thatrsquos always consistent for themrdquo Catherine said ldquoFor children who are moving frequently knowing they have the security of the food bag every Friday helps a great deal with feeling more settled and lessens the anxiety they might experiencerdquo

a significant difference Catherine Knowles sees your gifts in action firsthand Shersquos the homeless education program coordinator at Metro Nashville Public Schools
Catherinersquos office reaches about 3400 kids with clothing referrals and Second Harvestrsquos BackPack Program It provides bags of kid-friendly food designed
to last through the weekend when students canrsquot access school meals
For kids who are often staying with family members or friends the BackPack Program lets them maintain some independence
ldquoThe kids are highly motivated and very aware of wanting to provide for themselves and not be a burden on anyone elserdquo Catherine said
With help from friends like you Second Harvest delivers food every week and student volunteers sort and package it for delivery to Nashville area schools
Beyond keeping kids fed the BackPack Program helps struggling families save money for other expenses like rent mdash many live in weekly rental motels
BackPacks also build trust between parents and administrators improve school attendance and provide stability for children in uncertain situations
The security of the food bag every Friday helps a great deal
Monthly donors like Barbara Sullivan arenrsquot just kindhearted and devoted ndash theyrsquore also practical thinkers Autopay is easiest for her and it reduces Second Harvestrsquos overhead meaning more resources for hungry people And in the end thatrsquos what itrsquos all about
ldquoEvery time it pops up on my statement Irsquom reminded how much good work is going on thererdquo Barbara said ldquoThat monthly contribution reminds me that my neighbors are hungry and I am doing a tiny bit to helprdquo
Barbara has been a Second Helpings donor since 2014 and she recently upgraded her monthly gift amount Many of our monthly donors are upgrading to $40 a month in honor of our 40th anniversary At that rate in one year yoursquod provide almost 2000 meals to people in need

News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger
more than 35 years ago Anne Holt news anchor at the time remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the stationrsquos Food 2 Families program
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food Today the program has expanded to local schools teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference Each fall dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food
ldquoIt gave us a priceless interaction with our communitieshellipthe ability to educate our children and educate a whole new generation about hungerrdquo Anne said
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm Because her family grew what they ate they understood the true value of fresh healthy food
Although shersquos never experienced hunger personally Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work mdash the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families is sorted
Anne remembers that in the early days Second Harvest wasnrsquot much more than a closet handing out emergency food Shersquos thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years and she credits the growth to our communityrsquos caring heart
ldquoHunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own mdash we have to work togetherrdquo she says ldquoWe are very fortunate to live in a giving communityrdquo

Many of our donors like to leave us a gift in their wills and wersquore always so grateful to be part of their legacy But few realize therersquos a tax benefit by donating retirement income now If yoursquore 70frac12 and older you can give to Second Harvest directly from your IRA and avoid paying the tax thatrsquos normally due
ldquoWe believe in the work of Second Harvest and decided we wanted to give a larger donation than we had in the pastrdquo said Carol VanKirk ldquoIn talking with our financial advisor we were told that giving
the Required Minimum Distribution from our IRA would be a smart decision for everyonerdquo
ldquoBy sending the money directly from our investment account to Second Harvest we avoided paying any tax because it was not considered income Second Harvest received the full monetary amount with no tax deducted ndash a win-winrdquo

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo
Having enough to eat seems so simple but it is essential mdash especially for growing children We appreciate your partnership

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger
more than 35 years ago Anne Holt news anchor at the time remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the stationrsquos Food 2 Families program
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food Today the program has expanded to local schools teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference Each fall dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food
ldquoIt gave us a priceless interaction with our communitieshellipthe ability to educate our children and educate a whole new generation about hungerrdquo Anne said
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm Because her family grew what they ate they understood the true value of fresh healthy food
Although shersquos never experienced hunger personally Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work mdash the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families is sorted
Anne remembers that in the early days Second Harvest wasnrsquot much more than a closet handing out emergency food Shersquos thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years and she credits the growth to our communityrsquos caring heart
ldquoHunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own mdash we have to work togetherrdquo she says ldquoWe are very fortunate to live in a giving communityrdquo

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger
more than 35 years ago Anne Holt news anchor at the time remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the stationrsquos Food 2 Families program
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food Today the program has expanded to local schools teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference Each fall dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food
ldquoIt gave us a priceless interaction with our communitieshellipthe ability to educate our children and educate a whole new generation about hungerrdquo Anne said
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm Because her family grew what they ate they understood the true value of fresh healthy food
Although shersquos never experienced hunger personally Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work mdash the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families is sorted
Anne remembers that in the early days Second Harvest wasnrsquot much more than a closet handing out emergency food Shersquos thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years and she credits the growth to our communityrsquos caring heart
ldquoHunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own mdash we have to work togetherrdquo she says ldquoWe are very fortunate to live in a giving communityrdquo

Many of our donors like to leave us a gift in their wills and wersquore always so grateful to be part of their legacy But few realize therersquos a tax benefit by donating retirement income now If yoursquore 70frac12 and older you can give to Second Harvest directly from your IRA and avoid paying the tax thatrsquos normally due
ldquoWe believe in the work of Second Harvest and decided we wanted to give a larger donation than we had in the pastrdquo said Carol VanKirk ldquoIn talking with our financial advisor we were told that giving
the Required Minimum Distribution from our IRA would be a smart decision for everyonerdquo
ldquoBy sending the money directly from our investment account to Second Harvest we avoided paying any tax because it was not considered income Second Harvest received the full monetary amount with no tax deducted ndash a win-winrdquo

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

News 2 WKRN first took up the fight against hunger
more than 35 years ago Anne Holt news anchor at the time remembers learning about our efforts and joining the cause as spokesperson for the stationrsquos Food 2 Families program
Food 2 Families worked to raise awareness about local hunger and encourage the community to get involved by donating food Today the program has expanded to local schools teaching children about the scope of hunger while making a difference Each fall dozens of schools participate in a friendly competition to collect the most donated food
ldquoIt gave us a priceless interaction with our communitieshellipthe ability to educate our children and educate a whole new generation about hungerrdquo Anne said
Championing hunger relief was natural for Anne She grew up as one of 13 children on a farm Because her family grew what they ate they understood the true value of fresh healthy food
Although shersquos never experienced hunger personally Anne says her gratitude for her good fortune motivates her to ensure others have access to the food they need She was honored to learn Second Harvest dedicated one of our sorting rooms to her work mdash the very room where food collected through Food 2 Families is sorted
Anne remembers that in the early days Second Harvest wasnrsquot much more than a closet handing out emergency food Shersquos thrilled to see how our programs and services have expanded over the years and she credits the growth to our communityrsquos caring heart
ldquoHunger is not something that one person or one organization can solve on their own mdash we have to work togetherrdquo she says ldquoWe are very fortunate to live in a giving communityrdquo

6 Feeding Hope
Many of our donors like to leave us a gift in their wills and wersquore always so grateful to be part of their legacy But few realize therersquos a tax benefit by donating retirement income now If yoursquore 70frac12 and older you can give to Second Harvest directly from your IRA and avoid paying the tax thatrsquos normally due
ldquoWe believe in the work of Second Harvest and decided we wanted to give a larger donation than we had in the pastrdquo said Carol VanKirk ldquoIn talking with our financial advisor we were told that giving
the Required Minimum Distribution from our IRA would be a smart decision for everyonerdquo
ldquoBy sending the money directly from our investment account to Second Harvest we avoided paying any tax because it was not considered income Second Harvest received the full monetary amount with no tax deducted ndash a win-winrdquo

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

A School Pantryrsquos Shelves are Full Thanks to Your Support
We had children sneaking food from the
cafeteria because they were so hungryrdquo said Rebecca Hulse family involvement specialist at Tusculum Elementary School in Nashville ldquoWe realized on weekends they werenrsquot getting food unless we were sending it homerdquo
Rebecca runs the school pantry at Tusculum in partnership with Second Harvest and with help from Mary Guidry the schoolrsquos family resources director Every Tuesday a Second Harvest truck delivers fresh food to the school for Rebecca to share with about 45 students
The pantry bags include meat fruits vegetables grains and other healthy items Rebecca says she appreciates being able to fill empty tables as well as build relationships among faculty students and their families
Many of the families Rebecca serves relocated to the Nashville area as refugees Tusculum students hail from more than 30 different countries With the help of interpreters Rebecca connects families with school supplies clothing and medical assistance as well as groceries
Several kids are enrolled in a program called Students with Interrupted Formal
Educations Rebecca says having regular access to healthy food has brought stability to these childrenrsquos lives Good nutrition also improves behavior academic performance and more
Rebecca said the school pantry is possible because of your generosity and shersquos so grateful you choose to give
ldquoYoursquove allowed us to feed more children and meet the needs of more familiesrdquo she said ldquoYoursquore making such a difference in their livesrdquo

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future

FIFTH GRADERS ENJOY A WARM BALANCED AFTERSCHOOL MEAL AT THE WEST NASHVILLE DREAM CENTER
After school each weekday students can sit down to a full healthy
meal at the West Nashville Dream Center Darah Kerpka runs the Kids Cafe program at the center supported by a partnership between Preston-Taylor Ministries and Second Harvest She said itrsquos been wonderful to see how good nutrition affects kidsrsquo well-being
ldquoA lot of times especially in the classroom I notice such a behavior difference when a child has eaten versus when they havenrsquotrdquo she said
The West Nashville Dream Center provides tutoring counseling exercise with a personal trainer cooking classes and one-on-one time with mentors who help the children set goals and identify dreams for the future Having a balanced meal means kids can concentrate on the centerrsquos other important programs
Before partnering with Second Harvest and gaining access to the resources you help provide Darah said the center could only give the kids a small snack She knows some children would go to bed hungry if it werenrsquot for the evening meal the Center now offers It gives her peace of mind to be able to feed the kids
ldquoItrsquos such a joy to be able to provide a mealrdquo Darah said
Many of the kids she serves are independent and look after themselves and their siblings while their parents are
at work Your gifts give them the fuel they need to focus do well in school and learn how to break the cycle of poverty in the future
