8 GORDON HAYWARD

Utah Jazz forward, Gordon Haywardjoined the team for the 2010–2011

season. A native of Brownsburg,

Indiana, Hayward played for two

seasons at Butler and was then

selected by the Utah Jazz in the first-

round pick and signed a multi-year

contract. This young and talented

NBA pro is one player to keep your

eye on. He’s going to do great

things with the Utah Jazz.

WhatisthebestpartaboutlivinginUtah? The best part about being in Utah, besides playing for the Jazz, would probably be the mountains. They’re right there. They’re pretty beautiful—it’s like a postcard. And growing up, I went to Colorado and skied all the time, so I grew up around the mountains. It’s pretty cool.

Whereisyourfavoriteplacetogrababitetoeatinthe801?My favorite place to grab a bite to eat would probably be the Cheesecake Factory.

WhatisthebestthingaboutplayingfortheUtahJazz? The fans that we have are tremendous. Whether we’re winning or losing, they’re always there supporting us.

Ifyouhad48hourstogoanddoanythinginUtah,whatwouldyoudo?I would go skiing and snowmobiling.

Howdidyouspendyouroff-season?I spent it in Indianapolis working out, playing basketball, and hanging out with my friends.

WhatisthebestpartofbeingaprofessionalathleteintheNBA?I get to play my favorite sport as a job.

Doyouhaveanyfavoritemomentsfromyourcareerinthepros? When I first went home to Indianapolis and I walked on the court and got a standing ovation. That was pretty special.

WhatareyoumostlookingforwardtothisNBAseason?Getting back out there, especially after losing in the first round like we did last year; just getting back out there with my teammates.

Salt Lake City is full of neighborhood shops and cafés that you’ve perhaps walked past hundreds of times. Why haven’t you stopped? You probably don’t have a good reason. That was Cannella’s for me. I live just a few blocks away, but I somehow never found my way in until recently. After my first meal there, I was hooked on the amazing Italian food—I don’t know how I missed this Utah gem.

We often get so caught up in the new establishments that long-standing neighborhood favorites get overlooked, at least by food reviewers. Cannella’s, located at 204 East 500 South, has been around since 1978, and for good reason, too. Once you taste the cuisine, if you haven’t already, you’ll be back.

My stomach was won over after the first bite. The evening started with

bowl of steamed mussels (for only $5!) and a plate of the house bruschetta. The mussels were served in a garlic sauce that I could have eaten by the spoonful, while the bruschetta, made with bread freshly baked in their pizza oven, was topped with marinated roma tomatoes, roasted garlic, goat cheese, and a drizzle of balsamic reduction.

All entrées and pasta dishes come with a soup or dinner salad. The high-lights of their salad menu include an Italian Salad that’s topped with ground Italian sausage. (Ladies, your men will forever change their minds about salad after eating this one.) You can’t order a meat-laden salad without ask-ing about the story behind it. A guest once asked the founder, Joe Cannella, if he could add meat to his salad. Joe went to the back and chopped up some Colosimo sausage, cooked it up, and tossed it with their traditional

salad. It tasted so good that the Ital-ian Salad has been on the menu ever since. The other salad I would recom-mend is the Pear Spinach and Arugula Salad. Lightly dressed and served with polenta croutons, caramelized walnuts, and feta cheese, it is a good complement to a big bowl of pasta.

I also tried their popular Tuscan Chicken, an Italian take on Chicken Cordon Bleu. The chicken was cooked perfectly—stuffed with fontina cheese and prosciutto and served over garlic mashed potatoes with grilled aspara-gus and a sauce so fl avorful that those at the table kept passing the plate back and forth to savor even more.

Chef Alberto, the head chef, is not only known for his skills in Italian cuisine, but he’s also popular among the staff and guests for his talents in Mexican cooking. In the past, he would cook up tacos for the staff dinner, but this backfi red when the guests who came in early also wanted to try Alberto’s famous tacos. Thus, taco night at

Cannella’s was born. Only something like this could work in a neighborhood Italian eatery, where guests have a voice, like if there’s meat on a salad or not. To this day, you can visit Cannella’s on Wednesday nights for tacos and margaritas.

Some other tastes that will get me back in the doors of Cannella’s are their Cippino (the house fish stew special on Fridays) and the Frank Lloyd Wright Pizza with marinated mushrooms, truffle oil, arugula, mozzarella, and marinara. I must also mention that Cannella’s has daily specials including a happy hour menu with drinks and wine starting at $5 and dishes ranging from $5 to $9.

Although each taste was glorious, I recommend you get the full story of Cannella’s yourself. Ask about the family stories behind the pictures on the walls and the heritage behind this 34-year-old Salt Lake City dining staple.

For more about Cannella’s and other great spots around town, go www.the SLCfoodie.com.

Becky Rosenthal loves Salt Lake City. It doesn’t get much more complicated than that. Sometimes she attributes it to the four distinct seasons. Other times it’s the skiing or the summer evenings on the porch. However, most often, it’s the food. Becky Rosenthal started SLCfoodie a few years ago in hopes of sharing her love of the emerging Salt Lake City food scene. She currently lives downtown where she also manages Vintage Mixer.

Nothing shifts the holidays into high gear like Black Friday. It’s a rite of passage for the make-it-work Christmas shopper who is willing to include a little adventure in their holiday traditions. Whether it’s about the thrills or the deals, South Towne Center is offering plenty of both for all holiday shoppers.

MidnightMadness:Thursday,Nov22Starting on Black Friday eve, when midnight strikes, South Towne will reopen its doors for an all-night shopping ex-travaganza. The night’s adventures will be about more than shopping, however, as South Towne has a series of enter-taining tricks up their sleeves. The first 100 people at each entrance will receive goody bags, and treat stations will be strategically placed around the mall to help shoppers keep up their strength. Hot chocolate, as the drink of choice, will be on hand, and every shopper will be given a flyer featuring the in-store specials.

Shoppers can also plan on being serenaded by live entertain-ment from the likes of Peter Breinholt and Sam Payne, not to mention prize drawings on the hour from 1:00 to 6:00 am.

Peter Breinholt Midnight–2:00 amSam Payne 2:00 am–4:00am

Of course, if you need your recovery time after a great Thanksgiving feast, South Towne does offer a few other holiday adventures:

LiveandLocalLive and Local is an ongoing event to rock the mall’s halls from November 30 through December 2. Shoppers ventur-ing into South Towne throughout the month of December will be serenaded by local community groups. If that’s not enough to silence the inner Grinch, at least let the young and innocent at heart meet the big man from the North Pole. Santa will be arriving on a direct flight November 10th to meet and greet.

Santa’sBreakfast:Nov10at9:00amFresh from the North Pole, Mr. Claus will be hosting break-fast promptly at 9 a.m. on November 10th. He will be escort-ed to the feast by a holiday parade, so make sure to bring the young (and young of heart) a bit earlier so they won’t miss the grand entrance. The breakfast itself will be held in the South Towne Food Court with treats for all the good boys and girls. (Note to parents: this does give you a few days’ time and proper motivation to keep those kids in line.)

So, for thrill seekers, bargain hunters, and families alike, there will be plenty to do at the south end of the valley’s South Towne Center over the upcoming holiday season.

18 Years of laughter

Another new Christmas comedy here at the Off Broadway spoofs the Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye musical White Christmas, but ours is just a little “Off”.
