So what has been keeping us all entertained at iNTowers? Essex Fashion Week was a blast, well

We couldn’t resist a cozy fireplace in November, be inspired on page32, perfect for keeping the wintry chill at bay. Woodford saw thelaunch of Clarke Hillyer, page 17, and the whole of Essex, glow sticksin hand, lit up the streets of Woodford in support of the Haven HouseGlo-Walk. It was fantastic to see such patronage from the localcommunity.

Sue Lovett caught up with Sytner BMW on page 42 who wowed herwith their new concept showroom in Loughton and Russel Campbellgot all hot around the collars whilst reviewing the Ferrari F12Berlinetta.

Phew, that is quite some content!

Essex FashionWeek AW 2012

n impressive red carpet, champagne andcupcake reception greeted celebrities andall Essex finest’s at Essex Fashion Week AW2012. As guests arrived, impeccably dressedin outfits fit for Hollywood, their limousineswere besieged by paparazzi and film crews.A throng of fashionistas continued inside

The Ceme Conference Centre, Rainham, as amagnificent Essex Fashion Week shopping mall tempted eagershoppers, before the live shows.

Supported by Tresor Paris, Essex Fashion Week did little to breakdown the Essex stereo-type, with VIP's parading their bronzed skin, dazzling white teeth and huge eyelashes that cast their ownshadows. But this is our Essex, and this is how the Essex girl rolls.Even two fairy Princess Chug’s adorned the red carpet - a crossbetween a Chihuahua and a Pug - before Hybrid Fashion, Harry’sWorld (Harry Derbidge), Masato, Bowtique, Cadi’s Closet,Marbella Belles, Totally Essex, Denise Van Weenen, TresorParis, Dolly Rocker Kids, Strip Lingerie, Starship Boutique(Chloe Simms), Essex Emporium (Frankie Essex), Utter Nutter,Snapback Boy and With Love Jess (Jessica Wright) took to thecatwalk.

Hosted by Adam and Simon Ryan, and presenter Amy Childs, the runway was set to thrill as high end met high street. The modelslooked amazing as they thrilled the audience. Balcony table seating, housed the VIP guests, where a three course meal was served.Guests seemed thrilled with their goody bags, as they were seated.Other guests and celebrities were seated catwalk side.

Other sponsors of the event included Dingwuddles, StripBoutique Loughton, Cocobahloo.com, Kosho, BeSomebodyand Ciroc Vodka.

Surprise entertainment throughout the show included local singingtalent Tony Roberts from Britains Got Talent and 2Shoes from The X-Factor.

As Essex Fashion Week came to a close, the after-party kicked off with a ‘live performance’ by chart topping, urban act ‘Roll Deep’,as the show came to a close and entertained 2,000 plus guestsuntil the early hours of the morning.

iN Magazine saw celebrities such as TOWIE stars Jessica Wright,Harry Derbidge, Kirk Norcross, Cara Kilbey, Billie Mucklow,Frankie Essex, Chloe Simms, Gemma Collins, Diags andBobby. There were also other known reality faces from BigBrother, The Valley’s, Take Me Out and even retro pop starBradley McIntosh from S Club 7.

Welcome to iN’s societycolumn, ‘Girl about Town’where socialite CarolinePolledri expresses herfeelings about the iTV1show, X Factor.

have tried my hardest not to mention the X Factor inthis month’s column but, I can think of very little else.

I’ve spent a lot of time threatening to boycott the show(as if) due to the incredulity that Ryan (I refuse to call him

Rylan as I am convinced he put that L in himself) gotthrough. This left myself (and many others) seething, until a very good point was aired in my presence,

whilst I was partaking in my favourite daily pass time, ear wigging!

My ear wigged ‘subject’ voiced, ‘The producers must be ‘loving’the reaction to all the staged drama and the amount of money theyare raking in from the idiots that are now thinking, ‘oh, I must votefor my favourite singer as in this show, anything could happen’ andthen he laughed, like he was the cleverest man in the world and tome that day, he was. So there I am feeling like a classic fool butnow passing his opinion to be my own, pretending that I too wereclever and that I knew the secret X factor code.

And whilst delving into the history of the X factor, I suddenly hadan epiphany! All this is a little more sinister than just rigging thevotes. No! This talent show features one major technique, one tool that is used to lure the viewer to vote. One main medium forthe propaganda, which leads us to believe we actually care whowins and that the contestants really are vying for something.

And what is this powerful force ofdestruction I hear you ask? Well, I’lltell you – it’s Louis F-ing Walsh, he’sthe insider we’re all after, he’s ourmole!

Think about it, he always gets the lastvote, doesn’t he? I bet that’s so he’llchoose according to what works for TVand of course he’ll do anything the

bosses say, he’s X factor’sbiggest cheerleader and a bitwimpy. Plus, he hasn’t got anycredibility to lose and whatother job could he do? Well, Ican think of one but I wouldn’twant it printed.

So, all-in-all my loyal readers, please be aware (yet still enjoy)that this isn’t a talent show it’san entertainment show which isall very well but know this:while we were busy sniggeringat the delusional audition-ees,ultimately the joke is on us.And we all know who’ll have

the last laugh, don’t we Louis?

A DIARY oF A

‘Mum, you can’thave highdefinition brows,’my son retortedafter I haddisclosed myeagerlyanticipatedappointment for Strip Boutiquein Loughton, ‘it’sjust wrong.’ Yousee, my teenageson has a slightproblem with thefact that I am inmy nearly forties, but still takepride in how Ilook and in myappearance.

And why shouldn’t I? Forty isn’t a sell by date, an excuse to wear‘fuddy-duddy’ clothes, grow everything hairy and lose sight of howto look good. Forty is a time to embrace the finer things in life; finer lines, finer lips and for now, finer eyebrows!

Not intimidated by the male mannequin boasting a very small pairof Bjorn boxers, and an equally scantily clad female clone, I heldmy breath and walked into, for what some would say on firstappearance, a lingerie boutique. As if by magic, a glamourousshop keeper appeared.*

For 45 minutes I was waxed, trimmed, threaded, measured andtinted, until what was produced was a marvelous set of HD Brows. And without any pain or being left red and blotchy, thanks to a little dusting of mineral powder. As I blithely chatted to mytherapist, I felt for that moment, me again. Not, ‘Mum of four atnearly forty’! As I looked for the door that led to a little adventure, I was transported to... Well, nothing actually happened! Or did it? Ifeel younger, more confident. I look pruned and defined. Yes, I love the feel of my new look.

A beauty regime is hard to incorporate into a daily routine of thelife of a nearly forty. Playing taxi-driver, cleaner, chef, tutor andbusiness woman in one day takes its toll but it should not beignored. Embracing gravity and cultivating forests should beeradicated from any agenda, swiftly! Strip Boutique in Loughton,is cool, calm and oozes sophistication. So if you are looking for asnippet of a young persons adventure for an older person, withouthaving to put on a costume, give the girls at Strip Boutique a call for some well deserved Strip time.

INTERIoRS ith the weather outside still decidedly chilly, there is little as

appealing as snuggling up in the heat of your very own fire. But for those of us who do

not happen to reside in a country pile, and whosedining rooms lack a single exposed beam, it can bedifficult to imagine the traditional open range fittinginto the modern domestic sphere, both in terms of interior aesthetics and load-bearing walls.

But before you accede to forsaking the amber glow of a real fire for the more hum-drum appeals of theliving room radiator, be aware that a whole host ofyoung designers have turned their arty minds to giving a contemporary makeover to this most ancient of household features.

iNGREDiENTS:SERVES: 6

• 1kg/2lb 2oz rolled feather blade• 3 tbsp oil• 3 banana shallots or 1 medium onion, sliced • 2 celery sticks, trimmed, sliced• 2 carrots, thickly sliced• 2 garlic cloves, crushed• 500ml red wine• 500ml/17fl oz beef stock• 250ml orange juice• 2 tbsp tomato purée• 4-5 sprigs fresh thyme• 1 bay leaf• 1 tsp English mustard• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

- Served With Butternut Squash Puree & Mashed Potato -mETHOD:1. Preheat the oven to 160C/320F/Gas 3.

2. Season the beef on all sides with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper. Heat one tablespoon of oil in a large heavy-based frying pan. Fry the blade over a medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes on each sides, or until browned. Transfer the beef into a deep pot or tray.

3. Return the frying pan to the hob and reduce the heat. Add the remaining oil and gentlyfry the shallots, celery and carrots for 6-8 minutes or until golden-brown and softened. Stir in the garlic, cook for a further minute and add the mixture to the beef.

4. Deglaze the pan with wine and allow to bubble for a few seconds, stirring constantly and pour over the meat and vegetables. Stir in the stock, orange juice and tomato purée.Strip the thyme leaves from the stalks and scatter into the pan, add the bay leaf and mustard and stir until well combined. Bring to the boil and remove the dish from the heat.

5. Cover the surface of meat and liquid carefully with a piece of greaseproof paper. Place a lid on top and cook in the oven for 7-7½ hours or until the beef is very tender. Skim any fat away from the surface that appears during cooking.

6. Remove and transfer the meat to a plate. Strain the cooking liquor and vegetables through a sieve into a large non-stick frying pan. Press the vegetables with the bottom of a ladle to extract a rich purée and stir into the cooking liquor. Add salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce is well reduced, thick and glossy so this will act as your gravy.

7. Allow the meat to chill, then wrap it in cling film in a cylinder shape and let it set in the fridge overnight.

8. To serve, cut the blade into 1 inch discs and put it onto a baking try with greaseproof underneath and top the blade with a knob of butter and some honey. Heat for around 15 minutes at 200C.

9. Cook your fillet steak to your preference, serve with butternut squash puree, mashed potato then spoon over the sauce to glaze.

ocated just off junction 5 of the M11, and200m from Debden UndergroundStation, Sytner Chigwell is an award

winning dealership, one of the firstbusinesses to occupy the impressivefrontage of the Langston Road businessdevelopment site, some seven years ago.BMWs exude sheer driving pleasure and thequality of their products is renowned. However, itis not simply the cars that have made SytnerChigwell the premier provider of motor productsin this area; it is their outstanding service thathas seen customers return time and again.

‘Our business is focused on customersatisfaction,’ says Managing Director Adrian Hill.‘We have expanded our customer basethrough word-of-mouth. It’s the old adage; ifyou get great service you’ll recommend to afriend and we passionately believe that ourfuture growth is dependent on providing agreat service to our customers.’

Sytner Chigwell aim to make the process easy.Whether a customer visits to test drive a car, buytyres, is in for a service or to fix a curbed wheel,it’s the small things that make their service standout - for example: being able to drop the car at7.30am on the way to work, being able to parkquickly and easily, and being expected andgreeted by name.

Sytner Chigwell’s high standards are driven bytheir Customer Promise. Their ten commitmentsto customers, published on-line, underscore theirresolve to go the extra mile. One commitment to‘not leave you stranded when bringing in a car forservice or repair and it’s impractical to wait’ wasrecently demonstrated explains Adrian: ‘Acustomer visited five minutes before we weredue to close one Friday evening. Having had a

flat tyre she’d been driving her Mini on a run-flat tyre for a couple of days. We would onlyrecommend driving on a run-flat for a limiteddistance and below 50mph. She hadn’t beenable to get to a dealership and now the tyrewas completely shredded. She was stuck; shehad no car, had children to collect and wewere about to close. One of our mechanics, who was just about to leave, told her not toworry, he’d run her home. So, she was able toleave the car with us to sort and get home toorganise her kids. That demonstrates what agreat team we have here.’

Adrian stressed that much of Sytners success isdue to their staff. ‘Not only do we have a lovelycustomer base,’ he said, ‘but we are also ableto attract good staff. This is a great place towork.’ In fact in the Sunday Times ‘Best BigCompanies to Work For’, Sytner have ranked3rd for the third year running. ‘Employing greatpeople leads to good customer service whichleads to customers returning,’ Adrian said.

Peter Chadwick, General Service Manageradded, ‘Our Service Executives enjoy helpingpeople. They ensure that our customersreceive a seamless, personal service. Cars arereturned properly washed, customers are keptfully informed and all charges are clearlyexplained. We will always contact ourcustomer following a service to ensure theyare happy with their experience.’ SytnerChigwell’s star ratings, which consistently rankhigher than market average, are available to viewon-line. Here, real customers are able to postcomments and score their sales or serviceexperience.

The Langston Road site incorporates a BMWapproved used car forecourt and a new car show

room with a complimentary customer coffeelounge. The BMW range is young andtechnologically clever, incorporating a blend ofstyle, performance and economy that is hard tobeat. Central to the future development of theirbrand is EfficientDynamics – conserving energywithout compromising on performance. 2013 willsee the launch of BMWs fully electric, premiumproduct brand BMWi. Adrian Hill says, ‘there areno other green cars like it.’

The Mini showroom has a distinctly different feelto its BMW counterpart. With its neon signageand funky style it has a less formal atmosphere –it’s extroverted, spontaneous and in everyrespect something out of the ordinary, but at thesame time no less professional or committed totheir customer. The Mini is also a young andcontinually developing brand. March 2013 seesthe launch of the Mini Paceman, styled as a coupinterpretation of the Mini Countryman and everybit as iconic as the Mini’s round central Speedo.

Next time you find yourself sat at a red light atthe junction of Langston Road admiring thedazzling display of BMWs before you, make theturn and pop into Sytner Chigwell - you’ll be gladthat you did.

the most powerful road-going ferrari ever built. With 730bhp Ferrari’s new GT, the F12 Berlinetta, challenges forthe most powerful rear-wheel drive cars on sale today. Add tothat figure 509Ib ft of torque and Maranello’s latest machine canhit 211mph, 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds and 125mph in 8.5seconds. Not only is it fast, it’s also faster round a track thanthe firm’s current hypercar - the Enzo - and the old 599 GTO.The performance comes thanks to a 6.3-litre V12.

And it looks as fast as it sounds. Ferrari’s are (arguably) a hit andmiss affair, but the Berlinetta is everything you could hope for, it hasthe long bonnet you’d expect, but adds to that manga-like slashesand curves that make the F12 look bang up to date and certainly(we think) one of the prettiest cars on sale today.

It’s not all about looks, though. As with many new performance cars, aerodynamics have played a big part in the way the Fezza looks.Massive air vents in the bonnet clean up the car’s air flow, flapsopen to aid brake cooling, ducts on the rear-wheel arches preventpressure build up, and a scoop on the bonnet does the same for the bottom of the windscreen.

The F12 is also significantly lighter than the car it replaces, by beinglower, narrower and shorter than the 599, and by using a mix of 12different alloys, the new GT shaves 70kgs of kerb weight from itsolder brother. Meanwhile, the weight balance - which defines howa car feels in (and out) of the corners - is 46:54.Meaning the F12 is actually heavier at the rear, something almost unheard of for afront-engined car. It means(says Ferrari) that it isperfectly balancedin and resistsundersteer.

The weight balance is mostly down to a gearbox that is mountedbehind the rear axle. It a twin-clutch seven-speed system that offerssome of the fastest changes in the business and helps give theridiculous acceleration times.

Inside the F12 is classic Ferrari. As with all their latest offerings, adjustment to the way the car drives are carried out via controls onthe steering wheel (which looks like it could have been taken froman F1 car), unlike an F1 car the two-seater has, apparently, gotplenty space for the two people lucky enough to be sitting in it.Meanwhile, the boot offers up 320 litres, which can be extended toa luxury-saloon rivaling 500 litres by removing a load divider.

It even manages reasonable (er... Not really: ed)economy of 18mpg - impressivegiven the performance - andreleases Co2s justover 350g/km.

insignia biturbo addsperformance to its

economyVauxhall’s Insignia came just at the right time for the Britishmanufacturer, it was good looking. felt well built and handled almostas well as the class leaders, but what it lacked was a powerful dieselengine, a popular choice with fuel costs as they are.

This Biturbo diesel has been developed to bridge that gap. As its namesuggests, it has two turbo chargers - a little one that works at low revsand larger one that takes over completely at higher revs.

The results are best registered in figures and they are: 198bhp, 295Ib ftof torque, 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 143mph. Translatedinto real world situations, the Biturbo has plenty of go for effortlessovertaking and sedate cruising.

Meanwhile, economy actually improves over the lower-powered dieselwith 57.6mpg versus 55.4mpg and Co2s emissions of 129g/km versus134g/km.

The Insignia also brings FlexRide adaptive dampers, which allow you tochoose between softening/hardening the damping settings. The result isa car that is composed and well damped.

The car we tested was the sport tourer, Vauxhall’s answer to the estate, ithas enough space for a family of five, although its not quite as capaciousas the Vectra that it replaced.

The dashboard is logically laid out and the car is well specced to includesat nav, heated seats and climate control.

With prices starting at £27,120 the BiTrubo is only £1800 more than itsslower stablemate, which seems like a bargain for a car that is both fasterand more economical.

Of course what really matters is how it drives and that’ssadly not something we here at iN magazine have had thechance to sample, but TopGear magazine has done andsaid:

‘it has the sharpest steering rack of any ferrari, carbon ceramic brakes that now have more top endbite, and bodyroll has been reduced by 30 per centfrom the 599. turn in is 20 per cent faster, and you’lluse 15 per cent less steering angle.

but it’s been so well honed. the brakes, steering, throttle, gearbox, all do exactly what you expect.there’s no slack or slop at all, so you always knowwhere you are with it. it sounds ridiculous to saythat a car with 730bhp (the same as a pagani huayra, let’s not forget) is a doddle to drive, but this onereally is. it drives cleanly and precisely.’

Ultimately Ferrari’s own (and fantastic) 458 Italia may edgethe Berlinetta on out-and-out fun, but the GT counters withthe ability to be used day-to-day, meaning there really is noreason not to buy one, except for the £240k you’ll need isuppose. Better get saving.

PropertyinWORDS BY ROBERT ELLICE

WHAT LIES AHEAD?Having bought Clarke Hillyer, Walthamstow, in 2003and since launched two further offices, Loughton andWoodford; Managing Director Robert Ellice, brings a plethora of knowledge from the ‘Property AssetManagement’ sector.

n a recent report for the government by Sir Adrian Montague,it stated that institutional investors could fund the large-scalebuilding of private housing for rent. Montague also mentionedthat recent tax changes and wider market conditions couldhelp the sector to grow, but according to Shelter ChiefExecutive, Robb Campbell, certain thingsneed to be ascertained.

‘Despite the increase in the number of peoplerenting, the long term aspiration for many remainsto be a homeowner. While more rented housingcould help ease pressure on this over-heatedmarket, it’s vital that this does not come at theexpense of building affordable homes for peopleacross the country already struggling to get onthe property ladder in their local area. Youngpeople who are working hard and saving towardsa secure and affordable home need to know thatthe government is on their side.’

Speculation of a property crash in the UK hasconsistently been in the news for quite some timenow, but we believe that the property market willremain solid. It is clear, the supply of property isinsufficient to meet demands.

When there is a decrease in the asking price orprices soften, there is always a group of readybuyers that are willing to pick up bargains.

These include would-be first time buyers as mentioned above, andproperty investors looking for rental properties. There is a fundamentalundersupply of property due to the lack of completed developmentswhere developers stopped building during the recession.

We believe the demand for property alone will cause prices to remainfirm. Even though the number of unsold properties has been reported toincrease, the unsold stock levels are expected to stay below the long-termtrend. One of the reasons for this is growth in population. Inwardmigration has risen significantly due to the attraction of the UK as anexcellent place to work and live.

This points to the fact that property remains one of the best long terminvestments you can make. The only thing that investors need to seriouslytake into consideration is the location and choosing the right property atthe right time. They can then expect to take part in the substantial growthof the property investment market that has been consistently performingwell over the last decade.

The new rules; you makethe rules and can shapeyour own financial future.

Buying at the right price absolutely depends on being able to identify thetrue value of the property, and in order to be able to do that, you need toknow your own market inside out. You need to understand where otherpeople’s valuations come from and to be able to challenge those figureswhere necessary.

Building a portfolio is not something you can do overnight, and if youreally want to maximise the profitability of the properties you own orcontrol, that takes time. Learning how to source, negotiate, acquire, refurbish, tenant and manage those properties to get the best return onyour investment takes years of practice and experience. This is where thebest advice from those in the business counts. Remember a good estate

agent or property professional has had years ofexperience and has seen most things before. Use this knowledge and take advantage of strong professional advice.

What lies ahead for the future of your investmentis dependent on you and the decisions you make, alongside the professional advice you seek andhow you follow the market. Remember, you makethe rules.

“At a recent board meeting it was discussed if our company qualified for research and development tax relief. What sort of businesses qualify and how easy is it to claim this relief. Sebastian Canard, Chingford

Whilst the rule on claiming for this relief have not changed, the practical implementation of the rules has been refined byHM Revenue and Customs, which means that more and

more companies are claiming successfully. Indeed the Government arekeen to encourage businesses to spend on projects that push technologyforward.

Who can claim Research and Development (R&D) tax relief? Any limitedcompany undertaking projects which meet the HMRC guidelines. In order for a project to qualify for R&D tax relief it must be seeking atechnological advance via the resolution of technological uncertainty. In simple terms any projects which require a ‘trial and error’ approach, due to information regarding how to achieve the projects goals not beingpublicly available.

Examples of R&D expenditure are: software development, designing new products, creating new chemical formulas, making goods using new materials and enhancing existing products or technology.

Typical research and development expenditure is staff costs, subcontractorcosts, software licenses, consumables and external quality assurancetesting.

Claims can range from several thousand for smaller firms, up to manymillions for larger companies. As a general rule a corporation tax payingsmall or medium company undertaking R&D projects which have£100,000 of qualifying expenditure would receive a refund or tax credit of around £20,000.

A profitable tax paying company can use the R&D relief to reduce thecorporation tax they pay or claim a refund. A loss making company can usethe R&D relief against future profits or receive a reduced amount as cash.

The industry consensus is that many more companies qualify for this reliefthan currently claim. This is a specialist area of tax that works best for acompany when experienced experts handle the claim.
