ANZAC Day Commemoration

Phoenix Community College commemorated ANZAC Day

this year in two ways.

ANZAC Day Assembly

The secondary campus held an assembly dedicated to

remembering our servicemen and women on

Wednesday 24th April. The Year 12 Leadership Team ran

the assembly, ushering students and staff to their

correct places as well as reading poems and prose that

helped to explain the significance of the day. Our College

Captains, Tahlia Wells and Mitchell Collins expertly

hosted the event with Dee Jay Redmond performing the

Welcome to Country and the school band the music,

with our Cadets marching with the Australian flag.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT At Phoenix we have identified the core areas to target in

2019: Engagement, Growth and Wellbeing

At Phoenix we pride ourselves on giving our students

opportunities that will ensure that we will make progress

in each of these areas.

For example this year:

We have developed a Year 12 Study Centre, with

additional tutors to support all of our students.

We have invested in Literacy and Numeracy Coaches to

ensure that our implementation of learning in the

domains of literacy and numeracy are cutting edge. We

want to all ensure that every Phoenix student sees

themselves as a successful writer, reader and

mathematician.

We have employed a Koori Coordinator to enable us to

be more inclusive of our Koori students and to assist us

to connect with our families.

We have expanded our Student Leadership program to

introduce a Year 11 Leadership Camp. This

developmental program will assist any Year 11 student

who has the aspiration to be a leader in Year 12.

We have joined the Melbourne University Network of

Schools, which links us to the best academic minds in the

Southern Hemisphere.

It is through this work each day that we commit to

realising our MORAL PURPOSE.

Phoenix P-12 Community College prides itself on the

We were very fortunate to

have Lynne Redman as our

guest speaker.

Lynne spoke about Alex

Tascas and her incredible life

of service as a Nurse in the

Armed Forces. Alex was no

older than our Year 12’s when

she began her nursing career

with the Army.

Attendance at ANZAC Day services

Students, including those from the Primary and

Secondary Leadership Teams, represented Phoenix

College at five ANZAC Day services. These included:

The wreath laying service at Ballarat Arch of Victory.

The Sebastopol march and service.

The Ex-Prisoner of War Memorial wreath laying

service.

VET/VCAL REPORT

Welcome back for Term 2! During the next 10 weeks we will be focusing on attendance, punctuality and the timely submission of learning tasks. Themes being explored in VCAL Maths this term include buying land and understanding the costs involved when building a house. Students have been to visit some display homes in the local area and are networking with local businesses. Students have also recently enjoyed visiting elderly community members in order to create a memoir based on their lives.

Students will receive vital information for our annual VCAL camp that will run in Term 3, further details to follow. All Year 12 VCAL students will also be expected to commence SWL (Structured Workplace Learning) every Friday in Term 3. The students will be counselled on how to approach their selected workplace and the processes that need to be followed.

As part of our data collection and analysis, the VCAL staff will be running a series of workshops in Week 9 that will assess our students on 7 key employability skills. These workshops will be run during the VCAL timetable and will be compulsory for students to attend.

Phoenix College Alumni Another legend who has gone on to do great things beyond school - read about Casey’s journey in the game design industry below.

Casey Thomas 2007

“When I was young I use to live out on a farm, but the country life wasn’t for me; I was always inside playing the Sim’s or Alien’s. I really enjoyed the creative classes I was in at school - not so much maths or science but I have definitely used a lot of those skills and I wish I had stuck out!

When it comes to game programming a good knowledge of maths and physics is really helpful. I have always loved games but before I even thought about a career in the industry I tried so many different paths including; hairdressing, dental assistant, retail, tattoo artist, massage therapist. You name it and I’ve probably at least tried it.

Then one night while I was playing the first “Darksiders” I was having so much fun, I thought to myself how do I go from being the player to building a game people would enjoy? So I started looking online at what it takes to be a game developer - which took me to the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) and I started my 2 year online journey from home after work hours. I did the advance diploma Design & Production course which meant I got to try a bit of everything from level design, programming, animation, art and many more.

Further study in business eventually lead me to building my own game studio called “Dark Shadow Studio” and our major game ‘Drone Legion’ has opened so many doors and opportunities that I had never dreamt of.

I am currently working at the Ballarat Tech School (BTS) to bring students one day classes like coding, modelling, animation, level design and building games. I really enjoy this because I have years of industry experience to help give students a push in the right direction and a bit of a taste of what it’s like to be part of the industry.

Advice to current students

“It doesn’t matter what school you go to, who was your friend or what degree you complete - just pursue what makes you feel you, even if it takes you a few years and different career paths to figure it out, just keep searching!”

Check out Casey’s company Dark Shadow Studios online!

The program invited Year 12 Biology students to

reinforce their learning about the immune

system through two hands-on lab sessions and

talks from practicing immunologists about their

research and career pathways.

The event also celebrates the International Day

awareness on the immune system.

Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute Visit

Alicia Mroz, Alicia Marchant and Hannah Thorp (pictured with medical researchers) visited the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute on May 3rd for a tour of the Ballarat laboratory. All three students are interested in a future career in this area and it was terrific they were able to gain a better understanding of a typical working day for a laboratory scientist.

I’m reading…

I have just read To Obama, with love, joy, anger, and hope by Jeanne Marie

Laskas. I really enjoyed this book as it gave me glimpses into many people’s

lives. The ‘everyday’ American who felt they needed to write to the leader of their country to express their deepest

hurts, proudest moments, or to beg/thank for change. It demonstrated the

deep connection Americans feel to their President and national identity. There is something very powerful about a

letter; this book shows how important it is for leaders to stay connected to those they lead and the impact individuals can have on a country. To Obama made me wonder if

people write to our Prime Minister and if he reads those letters. It certainly is a journey through love, joy, anger and

hope!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it to everyone – it is very

thought provoking!

If your child is being bullied It can be distressing to learn that your child is being

bullied. You need to consider what you know about

your child and the details of the situation to make the

best decision for your child. Different approaches and

strategies may be necessary for various situations and

individual children. Let your child know that you take

the bullying seriously and that you can help them to

report it to the school. You should contact the school

immediately if your child's safety is at risk.

- Stay calm and positive.

- Discuss and practise strategies for face to face

bullying.

- Do not advise your child to fight with the other child.

- Discuss strategies for online bullying.

- Report the bullying to the school.

- Seek help for your child to learn about dealing with

bullying.

Stay calm and positive Focus on identifying a solution with your child. Your

attitude will influence your child. A confident, positive

and resilient attitude can help to stop bullying from

continuing. Children can be reluctant to tell someone

else about bullying. Sometimes children don't want

their parents to become involved and are afraid of the

consequences if they tell you and the person who is

doing the bullying finds out.

Encourage your child to talk about what happened.

Tell your child that reporting the bullying is okay.

Assure your child that it is NOT their fault. It can be

upsetting for you to find out your child is being bullied

or that your child has been reluctant to tell you. Draw

on your own networks to get support for yourself while

you are helping your child.

Give your child the Kids Helpline telephone number

(1800 55 1800 https://kidshelpline.com.au/ ) and web

address if they ask to talk to someone other than the
