PRINCIPAL REPORT

Celebrating Success The holiday start could not have been sweeter for Year 12 student Lucas Hammond who made a momentous trip to Perth. Lucas’ trip was the culmination of 18 months of hard work as part of the World Skills Challenge competition which formed part of his experience of VETiS (VET in Schools).

Lucas’ area of expertise is Building and Construction, in which he is currently completing his fourth unit. Building and Construction was one of the 50 trades represented at the competition showcasing some of Australia’s most talented students. The road has been a long one starting in April 2013 where Lucas successfully won the Regional Final in Ballarat with the manufacture of a basic saw stool. He then went on to further success in the State final in

Melbourne in October 2013, where he was asked to manufacture a more complex version of the same piece of equipment. This success afforded Lucas the invitation to the National final which was held in Perth between 18th and 20th September 2014.

During the three days of stressful competition, young people from all over Australia demonstrated their skills in Hairdressing, Jewellery making, Plumbing, Baking and many other disciplines. $30,000 of gold was provided for the Jewellery making section of the competition as well as 300 kilos of chocolate for pastry chefs and at least 20 tonnes of steel for the 500 competitors.

For Lucas to win he had to beat six other highly skilled carpenters constructing a garden arbor with seat. Tim Blee, Lucas’ teacher, said attending the competition with Lucas was a privilege but the stress of watching and not helping was equivalent to having children. However this aside, Lucas was triumphant and won with 80.25 points from a total of 100 with his nearest competitor scoring 77.75 points. Lucas went away with the gold medal and certificate and this will allow him to add to his resume, putting him far ahead of other job candidates.

Lucas has been blown away by this amazing experience and he has had a valuable opportunity to make new friends in a variety of trades. He appreciates the skills he has developed as part of the competition and the confidence it has given him and the doors it has opened to future apprenticeships. Well done Lucas, we are proud of your efforts and the success you are celebrating. You are a great ambassador for not only VCAL but Phoenix P-12 Community College. Congratulations!! Sensational!!!

2015 SCHOOL LEADERSHIP TEAMS – Selection Process The 2015 College Leadership Teams’ Selection Process is well underway at the Sebastopol Campus and is about to take place at the Redan Campus during November. It has been fantastic to see the quality and high number of applicants going through this extensive process. What an incredible example they are of our ‘$Million Student’ mantra; a credit to their families, the College and the Community. This program underpins our focus on student voice and high aspirations. Incredibly well over 100 students have applied for involvement with these leadership groups, a real recognition of the Leadership Programs on offer across the two campuses. This highlights the high calibre of students attending the College and the clear acknowledgment of our high expectation agenda across all aspects of the school. Congratulations to all involved. Well done!

The College Student Leadership Teams will again comprise of twelve students on the Secondary Campus from Year 9 to Year 12, made up of the following combination: College Captains, College Vice Captains, SRC Leaders and House Captains. On the Redan Campus, six School Leaders will formulate the Campus team: Two School Captains and four Vice Captains.

College Building Update – Stage 2 work. The Phoenix P-12 Building Program continues to progress well. The two new Learning Villages are well and truly starting to show the 21st Century design that formulates part of their structure, with one of the Learning Villages being almost at lockup stage. This Stage 2 development is now a major part of the landscape on the Sebastopol campus site, with car parking zones leading off Tuppen Drive and Hertford Streets starting to take shape as well. Bring it on!! At this stage the construction work continues to be going well, so our target for moving in and being

operational mid 2015 (Term 3 / July) is on track. Keep it going guys!!!

2015 Year Enrolments – Prep at Phoenix P-12 Redan Campus/reminder Prep enrolments for next year are being finalised and planning

for the 2015 school year is underway. Our College families are asked to discuss with any families that they know are considering enrolling their Prep child at the Redan campus to book an appointment as soon as possible. Please get them to call in at the General office on either the Redan or Sebastopol campus for an enrolment pack and any information that may be of assistance. Mr Scott Dellar - Executive Principal

SENIOR SCHOOL UPDATE As the year is quickly coming to an end for Year 12 students there are some important reminders for the students. Please make sure you keep in constant

communication with your teachers to ensure that all outcomes and competencies have been met before the students’ regular timetables finish.

Notes for Valedictory Dinner should have been handed in by now. There are limited places so please ensure that each student has completed this and handed it in or you may not be able to attend.

The end of year excursion is to Bounce in Essendon and will be paid for by the College so will not cost students anything. They will also be

The Gary Ebbels Trophy (Phoenix P-12 Senior Football Best

and Fairest)

The Gary Ebbels Trophy presentation night was a chance to reflect on a fantastic year. Whilst this year was not as

successful as the previous year, we had an opportunity to unearth some younger talent as well as

try players in different positions.

The count saw:

Jackson Ford won the "Gary Ebbels Trophy" as the Best

and Fairest for 2014. He was the team’s Vice Captain

who demonstrated versatility playing in a variety of positions from Full Back, Ruck and On-ball. Jackson was

a consistent performer, polling in every game to win the Best and Fairest in his final year at the College.

The "Runner Up Best and Fairest" went to Dylan Price.

Dylan played the majority of the year in the midfield, often playing the entire game on the ball, showcasing his

tireless work rate and consistency as a footballer.

The 2014 "Coaches Award" went to Grady Snowden. During the year Grady took on the task of playing on the

opposition’s best forwards. Grady developed a strong vocal presence on the field showing a new found

leadership in his role as general of the backline.

The "Rookie of the Year", a first time award, went to Matthieu Brehaut. Matt was a surprise packet this year

as we weren't sure what to expect from him as a younger Year 9 student playing against Years 11 and 12

students. Matt applied himself tremendously against

much older competition. During a few flat patches from the Year 12's, Matt was often the spark to get the team

back on track. His work on the wing was outstanding which was capped off with a stellar three goal

performance in our final game against Ballarat High School.

If you see any of these students please congratulate

them on their accomplishments.

Matt Sharkey, Drew Layton and Mitch Jolly

provided with a light lunch and are encouraged to enjoy their final outing as a cohort.

Parents are welcome to our Final Assembly which will take place on Wednesday, October 22nd in the Assembly Hall at 10.15am.

Years 9, 10 and 11 students will soon start a counselling process about Subject Selections so you need to make sure they are aware of the different pathways on offer and what interests them.

As the term progresses there will also be more details about the transition programs for senior students which will involve returning to school and beginning the next year level. This is very important as students are given work to complete over the holidays to ensure they are ready to successfully tackle the next year.

Mr Andrew Greed Assistant Principal - Senior School

MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATE The Middle School will be a busy place during Term 4. We have a myriad of excursions planned across our KLA areas, key events such as the Year 9 Graduation and then finally the Middle School Camp. Each of these represent wonderful opportunities for students to explore and enjoy diverse and exciting learning opportunities. We remind all students and families that the key requirements for participation in these activities are our College values. Students should ensure that they wear full College uniform for excursions unless instructed otherwise. In our classrooms for the next month we will be focusing on ensuring that students are punctual for their classes. Our expectation is that students prepare for classes by bringing the required equipment for two classes so that they do not have to visit their locker in the break between classes. We also remind students that they will not be excused from class (to visit locker etc.) if they do not have their diary. The diary is required so that the teacher can write the appropriate note. Uniform Update Reminder to all parents that the transition period for uniform ends at the end of the 2014 school year. This will mean that every student will be expected to be in complete Phoenix P-12 Community College uniform at all times. This includes the smaller items such as socks, hair ties etc. Please ensure that you are making appropriate provision for this now. The most up to date uniform policy will be provided to all parents a little later in the term. From the commencement of 2015 a PE bag / reader bag will be introduced on both campuses. This is a versatile and cost effective item, with a space for students to have their name written. We see this as a valuable inclusion in the set of equipment that all students will have.

There was much to love about ‘Book Week 2014,’ beginning with the Fashion Parade, Debating,

Phoenix P-12 Community College to broadcast our ‘Quidditch Final’ on a National stage.

A lot of people made this happen and once again these people all helped our community come

together and experience some life-changing events.

She knows everything about me. From the day I was born to the day she dies I’m there. Every breath, every second is hers. She can see into my future and change my past. She twists my mind and changes me. She is the author and I am the story.

Tamika Fuhrmeister Year 7

I slowly crept up to the girl, lying lifelessly on the cold, polished concrete floor. She had a purple dress with white and yellow flowers all over it. I picked her up gently and took her over to my Mum. I said “She’s only $4.99, can I get her?”

Lachlan Eades Year 10

I wake up with a start, “Honey there’s a man in the house,” she whispered. I get out of bed and search the house. I pick up my bat and put on my bike helmet, and move slowly down the stairs. Then I remember… I don’t have a wife!

All three girls represented the College beautifully. Bree's

speech was exceptional and was quite emotional which impressed the group. During morning tea the girls had a

number of people congratulating them on their

presentation. All three were very gracious. Well done girls!!!

Bully Stoppers: Speak Up Against Cyberbullying

Students achieve their best at school in safe and supportive environments, where they are free from bullying and disruptive behaviour.

We put a big emphasis on preventing bullying at school – through education in the classroom, intervention in the playground and a focus on promoting positive behaviours.

However, with the rise of social media, bullying now occurs online, as well as in person. Cyberbullying is just as harmful as face-to-face bullying, and it can occur at any time of the day.

Cyberbullying is an increasing issue in the wider community – and the best way to tackle it is for schools, students and parents to work in partnership.

Phoenix P-12 Community College is supporting the Victorian Government’s Bully Stoppers campaign – which has just launched a new series of tools and resources for parents and students to support students in preventing cyberbullying.
