Dear Friends,

It gives me great pleasure to communicate to all of you through Samanwayam. At the outset I would like to thank all the members of the DP World Cochin team who have and will stand by the organisation in times of tumult when we are striving to improve our business and the economy is on a down turn. We have been constantly showcasing our terminal to bring in more volumes and vessels and surely our efforts will soon show results. However during these testing times, it also challenges us to bring out the best in terms of efficiency to stay ahead of competition and survive.

Energy, as in most industries, is the biggest driver in expenditure. Bringing energy efficiency through innovation and optimisation has been our focus. I am very proud to be part of the team at DP World, Cochin, which is constantly on the lookout for improving systems and optimising resources. Several initiatives have been taken in this direction. Terminal lighting consumptions have been reduced to more than 50% by use of SCADA systems and voltage optimisers. Currently trials are ongoing with LED lamps on high masts which will reduce the consumption further. We are also looking at possibility of reducing the reefer consumption by voltage optimisation.

The active participation and passion of all staff in suggesting and implementing changes is very encouraging. Constant monitoring to reduce any unwanted energy usage and to sustain this saving is done religiously. The initiatives taken by the terminal has been widely appreciated by the State Electricity Board while the State was going through a power starved phase during this summer. A presentation on our initiatives is planned to be broadcast on the national channel by the KSEB, which will be a proud moment for all of us.

We have been able to reduce our lube oil consumption close to 60% by setting up in-house test lab and an offline oil filtration unit. The lube oil is replaced on equipments only after condition monitoring.

Water is a precious and finite resource. As part of water conservation program, we set up a filtration unit which filters the hard water for irrigational use and purposes other than for drinking. Our water requirement which was supplied through water tankers (from outside sources) last year, the consumption ranging from a 100 KL per day during summers to 50 KL during monsoons, is now being met inhouse through rain water storages. This ensures savings in cost, clean and hygienic water supply. Add on to this a reduction of tanker movements. Solar energy has also been used for water heaters, running fans in RTG cabins during idling, lighting remote security cabins, distillation unit for battery water etc.

On the process efficiency side in maintenance, we have initiated the RCM concept in-house for the equipments. It emphasises more on non invasive and predictive maintenance which has enabled reducing the repairs and maintenance costs, cutting out unnecessary maintenance (time based to need based). I would like to thank the team of engineers and equipment operators who have contributed to analysing the failures / potential failures and redesigning the PM routines.

Safety has always been second nature to all of us in DP World. Several safety initiatives have also been put in place and shared through the Global Safety and Environment as best practices for other terminals to benefit from. Now all our RTG gensets and Reachstackers are installed with fire-smothering systems (done in-house), working at heights and rescue from heights trainings being conducted for all staff by our specially trained personnel. A lot of effort has gone into improving the safety culture of the external truck drivers accessing our terminal. 5S is a concept that we started last year and is bringing change in our workplace to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

Once again I would like to thank everyone for the efforts put and let’s look forward to making DP World, Cochin, one of the finest ports in the world.

TRIP TO HOLYLAND

Our trip to the Holy land started on the 8th of May, 2013 to Amman, the capital of Jordan. Leaving behind

the greeneries of Kochi we witnessed a parched dry land at Amman. Jordan with its Mosaic city of Madaba and Mt. Nebo was our first part of Holy land visit. Large fields of Barley, lentils, wheat and olive trees adorned the land of Jordan on both sides on our way. The buildings were all old and small made of yellow lime stone. Jordan, the biblical land of prophets Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Elijah and Elisha has 80% desert area and 20% cultivated area in the Jordan valley. After visiting the holy sites of Madaba & Mt Nebo, we did our little bit of shopping for mosaic souvenirs & Dead sea cosmetics and halted at Amman for the night at Al-Fanar- Palace. The next day on 9th May, we were on our way to Israeli border. It was all hills and valleys on the way and on reaching Jordan valley we could see poly houses having high Tech cultivation. Crossing the Jordan border at Sheik Hussein bridge we reached the “No Man’s Land “ and waited for entry into Israel which was a frisky and time consuming business.

Israel is a war land from time immemorial and also a land of fruit s & vegetables rightly called the land of Milk & Honey. We visited Nazareth, Mt. Tabor and Cana Wedding church there. Israel has lot of agricultural land (Bread / Fruit basket of the Middle East) owned by Kibutz farms. Mt. Tabor was the highest peak we visited and the panoramic view was stunning. We halted at Gardenia Nazareth, a beautiful hotel having spectacular view of the town ship settlement of Israel at night. Geraniums and Roses were aesthetically planted to give a good floral ambience to the surroundings. On 10th may we visited several other Holy sites including Kaphernaughm, Mt. of Beatitudes, Church of multiplication, Jordan river and a breathtaking boating in the sea (fresh water lake) of Galilee. Galilee along with Jordan river are the sole source of fresh water in the land of Israel.

On our way to Bethlehem, we crossed Israeli and Palestine borders several times and this justifies the frequent struggles in this region. We stayed at Angel Hotel at Bethlehem for 3 days which is in Palestine. There is a huge wall dividing Israel and Palestine which is said to be built in one single night. Staying at Bethlehem, we visited many holy sites nearby including the Holy city of Jerusalem, Wailing wall,

Jericho, Dead sea and the Nativity church at Bethlehem where Jesus Christ was born. A balance float in the Dead sea was what every body was yearning for and it was a rich experience for all of us .

On 13th we left for Egypt by bus. We crossed the wilderness of Judean desert, the steep rocky hill terrains, Timna Park the copper kingdom and finally reached Eilat, the port town of Israel from where we entered into the Arab Republic of Egypt at Taba International Gateway. Travelling long, we reached Sham al- Sheikh, a beautiful tourist city in Egypt by night and stayed at Noria Resort. Next day we started further in Egypt to cross over to the African continent through the Suez Canal Tunnel built 300m below the Mediterranean sea. We visited the perfume factory, Papyrus paper making, Artworks, and a cruise in Nile enjoying the belly dance and other folk dances before retiring for the day at Mercure Hotel, Cairo. The next day we visited one of the Seven wonders of the world , the pyramids of King Khufu and Shinx at Giza. We also visited the old Cairo city also called the Christian Cairo where the Holy family fearing the Roman persecution stayed in exile. By noon we were at Cairo international airport for our return journey.
