Clinic OpportunityJean-Paul Magnen from Saumur, France will be here May 24-28 for a

clinic with dressage or dressage in jumping or jumping. He is interna-tional FEI coach for jumping and cross country. He has coached manyvaried International teams.

I have no jumps at my place really (only about 3) but he would goto another farm for teaching if there were people interested in jump-ing.

He has written a book on dressage for jumper riders. He utilizesdressage principles for jumping. He is very modest and so does nottout himself like other instructors do. He also is very concerned ingetting the rider to ride properly, not just to praise the riders whilethey are riding incorrectly. He will push a rider to change for the bet-ter, and some people find it intimidating to get out of their safetyzone. However, they do not progress if they do not know what isneeded to be done to ride better.

The objective of clinics is for people to learn something they do notknow, not to show off what they do know and have someonepraised them.

If anyone is interested in doing the clinic with him on any of thesedays, May 24-28 ,let me know. Or if anyone wants to have him cometo their farm for jumping, let me know.

His fee is $150 per hour.He really is a worthwhile teacher and a very important asset for

those people who truly want to learn, as difficult as it may be tochange our muscle memory and mind set.

MEMBERS’ StoriesThank You - A Salute to the Hackers

This week, I drove to Long Island to reconnect with an old friend. We were"horse buddies" 40 (gack! did I say that???) years ago. He is a trainer/ instructorwho has managed to thrive doing what I wish I had the talent to do.

His student rode a fit medium sized 17 year old German warmblood crosswhose dam she had owned and bred . The horse did shoulder ins, and leg yieldsfrom the quarter lines, very obedient and serious. The student improved undergentle guidance. Then the trainer rode, worked up to and on passage, the horsefloated happily and the owner quietly cheered with admiration of her horse andhis rider.

In conversation, the student mentioned that she learned many years ago, nev-er to sell a horse because you never know what becomes of them. She men-tioned a 30 year old hunter packer named Winkin that she lessoned on at thehack stable school string at Park Stables in Bethpage. She bemoaned that such awonderful privately owned horse could possibly end up in such a poor situation.

Lo and behold, it turned out that all 3 of us had our start at that same hackbarn! Patches, Belle Aire, Mr. Click, Poncho, Schroeder, 007, High Torr....- thenames of our old steeds bounced out of our distant memories - stories rolled -How we waited for our hour a week ride in a pack of 10 horses, nose to tail, it washeavenly.

Those grand 'poor hack horses' were our beginnings - we owe them a greatdebt. They are sainted for their contributions to our development. How manylives they must have influenced!

To each and every one of them - be proud!!!, of yourselves!!!, of us!!! THANKYOU!!!!! I can only wish that my own legacy could be as important!

Building a New DreamWe left Pennsylvania in December to build a new facility in North Carolina.

The place we purchased only had a home, a pond, and lots of trees in the way.

The move to NC has been pretty nice a this point. The changes in the farm arecoming slowly and with much anticipation. When we arrived with 11 horses and 9sheep, we didn't have a finished barn or any turnout, so the horses went to anew friend's barn in Asheboro and the sheep moved into a dog yard at our frontdoor.

The place looked like a giant had gone thru and knocked down 15 acres of for-est. The timber was gone but the mess remained, right up to our front door. Mytrailer which arrived in the pouring rain, promptly stuck next to the very narrowdriveway in 6" of mud. The days before Christmas saw a wonderful compassion-

ate barn crew assemble a steel erector set barn, so the pregnant sheep could getwarm and dry.

In mid Jan the parking lot in front of the house became a reality, then the localland clearing crew moved on to the barn and newly planned area for the pasture. We put stalls in our new barn made from mesh gates and round pen panels andmoved 6 horses home. I carried water in a 50 gal barrel from Jan 11 to April 5.

The barn and arena pad were put down on April 5. April 25 they are suppose tostart the ring piers to attach the steel for the covered arena. It looks like theweather gods may be with us. The barn, with 9 stalls, will be down the north sideof the arena. The arena will be covered with 6' side walls. Shiraz has been homefor 3 weeks and does her daily work on the spot of the new arena. NO more rid-ing up and down my driveway, which is over a half mile round trip.

The farm animal group is growing. We have 25 laying hens growing up, turkeyswill be here mid May and some newly purchased ewe lambs will join the flock. Toadd to the fun Merlot foaled a Wamberto colt on March 8, Whistler.

NEWs for USDF and USEF

Before you head out to the first springshows, there are two rule changes to note:

DR206.6 (DSHB) requires that all handlers, assistant handlers and whip assistants of any

age must wear protective headgear.

Rule GR845 is the new vaccine rule. "Effective 12/1/2015, horses entering the showgrounds must be accompanied by documentation of Equine Influenza Virus andEquine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) vaccinations within 6 months prior to enter-ing the stables. Horses not in compliance with this rule may be required to leave thegrounds upon request by Competition Management."

New Opportunity for GMOs from USDFUSDF is in the process of developing a new electronic publication that will be avail-able through the new USDF app. The focus of this publication is human interest sto-

ries and articles, and we would like to give our GMOs an opportunity to have some oftheir items published for a national audience. Ideally, the submissions would be in thesame vane as the submissions GMOs would make to the First Person Experience andGeneral Interest GMO award categories. To submit a story or article for consider-

ation, please complete the Editorial Release Form and attach it, along with the article(in Word format) and any photos/videos, to an e-mail and submit to [email protected].

This new program, Horse and Rider Together or HART, is a toolfor all members to record and share their daily riding activities. The online training journal allows participants to track theirrides over time, share how their ride went with friends, and

earn achievements based on the number of hours spent in thesaddle. The journal can be used by all USDF members and is tied

to their individual login. Riders can track an unlimited number ofhorses, view past ride information, and choose to share their progress

through Facebook.

"The Power of the Seat"By Anne Gribbons

After a lifetime of riding, teaching andjudging, I am keenly aware of the fact thata horse cannot perform better than the rid-er is able to guide it.

Riders who love to ride come in all shapes and sizes. The lucky ones, built with legs totheir eyeballs and short upper bodies will usually have the inside track on developinga stable and effective seat. However, there are a number of very successful riderswhose conformation is just the opposite and it never got in their way. What is alsoclear, is that some riders have a natural feel for how to stay balanced within thehorse's center of gravity, how to connect with the horse's mouth without interferingwith the forward movement and how to influence them with just the right amount ofpressure from leg or seat. Those are the dream students who make progress in al-most every ride and gladden an instructor's heart. (Read On)

"What Judges Look for at Training and First Levels"By Sarah Geikie, USEF 'S' Judge

What do judges look for at Training and First Level? This is a very interesting question, one that I am asked very frequently by riders. Many riders at these levels, especiallyriders new to dressage are not aware that there is a 'roadmap for dressage training.'It is called the Pyramid of Training. This guide is not only for riders and trainers toabide by, but it also provides the framework for which judges evaluate dressagetests. For every movement in a test, the judge must make a decision on whether thecriteria for the movement has been met. For example, the first movement of the testis enter working trot, halt, salute, proceed working trot. The essence of that move-ment is the straightness on the centerline, the transitions into and out of the halt, and the quality of the halt itself. Additional elements of this score are the quality ofthe trot before and after the halt, the overall balance of the horse, both lateral andlongitudinal, and well as the quality of the connection. The elements of the Pyramidof Training; rhythm, relaxation, suppleness, contact, impulsion, straightness, and col-lection, are guidelines the judge uses to determine how well the horse and rider havefulfilled the criteria for the movement.
