WELCOMEDIRECTOR’SWelcome back to school! What an exciting time! August has always been one of my favorite times of the year. Not only is it a month of renewal; it is a month of new beginnings. It is extremely satisfying to see old friends reunite and new friends made. Join me over the next few weeks as we welcome everyone back to campus.
I also want to extend an invitation to each of you to participate in one of the many activities offered by one of the eight program areas of the Department of Intramural/Recreational Sports. We are proud of the activity line-up that has been prepared for you. Most of those activities have been scheduled because of your support and input. Keep submitting your suggestions. Our program is a good one but we can make it a better one with your help. I am especially excited to see how the changes in the personal training program and the addition of spinning classes are accepted. I am expecting great things.
This edition of “HPERactive” is a new beginning for us. I hope that you find it useful. Either way, let us know. The second edition will be released in January and we already have some changes planned. The magazine is more cost effective for us and ties into our continuing sustainability initiatives. In conclusion, I want you to learn the importance of exercise and recreation. The proper amount of exercise each week will pay dividends beyond your expectations. More importantly, it is an investment in a quality life.
See you in the HPER!

called upon to assist in all aspects of club operations. Teams practice regularly and compete at regional and national levels against other universities. Club Sports are always recruiting, so
contact your favorites today!

greeN IN moTIoN
Green In Motion The Department of Intramural/Recreational Sports is a major player in the campus-wide sustainability initiatives. We believe that it is the responsibility of every individual to actively support and practice sustainable lifestyles. Here are some examples of our sustainable practices: the use of “green” chemicals, recycling of cans, bottles, and paper goods, the purchase of organic clothing, the teaching of “Leave No Trace” ethical applications, the support of alternative transportation methods such as cycling, and the use of recyclable office supplies. Projects in the works are: solar heating, energy capture from aerobic equipment, and ultraviolet sanitation systems for the swimming pool. We are excited about our sustainable practices and the plans for more initiatives in the future. Just as important, we are excited about doing these initiatives with your help.
