A “watermark” is a mark or im- pression left after water recedes that proves water has been there. Our passion is that long after we are gone evidence that we (God’s people) have been there will remain. We long to make a lasting impression for Christ. October 28 is “Reformation Sunday” on the church calendar. In 1516, a Roman Catholic Monk (Martin Luther) felt compelled to protest the dis- pensation of indulgences. The “Church” was selling salvation (And get- ting rich for sure). There was widespread Corruption as many priests took concubines or indulged in illicit love affairs with the women in their congregation. Others enjoyed luxurious living at the expense of impover- ished parishioners. In 1517, Luther posted his historic 95 Theses, or Dis- putation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences on the door of the cas- tle church in Wittenberg. By doing so, he launched a movement against the church’s practices, excesses and abuses. Luther's theses were widely read by the poor & civil authorities alike. Though Luther consid- ered his activities as reforms in church, his opponents considered him a heretic. Luther also contributed to major theological reform by translat- ing the Bible into German, which allowed people to hear and read the gospel of Jesus Christ in their own language. In 1518, Luther refused to recant of his firm convictions. In 1519, he was forced to declare his stand as opposed to some of the doctrines of the church. Many went before Luther & many would come after him in sacrificing for the Lord’s Church. But, the “Protestant Reformation” became a religious movement between 1517 & 1648 that began October 31, 1517 when Lu- ther posted his 95 Theses. The Reformers desired reform from the exter- nal & formal religion of the day and to reform the Church from within. On Tuesday, November 6, we have a privilege & responsibility to let our voices be heard by our vote. It is a simple way for us to exercise the great privilege we have enjoyed as citizens of this great country. We dare not take lightly the privilege to exercise our rights & responsibilities, as citi- zens in this country. But, more importantly, we need to pray for this country. We need a “Reformation in this Nation”. Proverbs 14:34 says that, Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people. Let us pray that God would revive His Church and turn a nation toward Him in a time when God is needed more than ever. Bro. Cregg Imprints The Newsletter of Watermark CMC Watermark CMC P.O.
