PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community, Welcome to another edition of our school newsletter. This fortnight I commence our newsletter with the devastating news that Mrs Fathima Renuza (mother of Bilaal one of our fabulous students and Manaal, now at Glen Waverley Secondary College, and wife to Sadir) unexpectedly passed away last week. Fathima will be forever remembered as the most gracious, friendly, warm, caring and humble person who adored her family and our school. I have so many fond memories of Fathima and I discussing our school, the progress and growth of her children and the many wonderful things her family had achieved after migrating to Australia and joining the Glen Waverley Primary School family. Naturally, this is extremely sad news and our thoughts and prayers are with Sadir, Manaal, Bilaal and their extended family. As you would be aware, dealing with grief and loss is very emotional and more often than not adults and children need support. At school we have access to educational psychologists and social workers who are trained to assist in this area which the children and families can access if required. Please do not hesitate to see or contact me if required. I have also attached an information sheet that outlines what parents can do at home – I hope you find this useful. Life Education Van A sincere thank you to all of the members of our school community for supporting this element of our Health Education program. The Life Education program is a fabulous means in which the children are provided with additional opportunities to learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)
Term 2, Issue 8 8th June 2017
Council of International Schools (CIS) Update As everyone would be aware, as an Internationally Accredited CIS school it is very important that we support other schools who are embarking on their accreditation journey and last week it was my turn to do so. I had the honour and privilege of spending an entire week at Malvern Primary School where the visiting team, which comprised of educators from China, Holland, India and Australia (Melbourne, South Australia, Tasmania and Queensland), viewed the school’s curriculum and processes again the vast international standards.
School Gymnasium and Car Park Update As mentioned in last fortnight’s newsletter, I am extremely pleased to report that we have made significant progress with this project. The contract to build the actual gymnasium has been awarded to Renew Constructions (Aust) Pty. Ltd. and at this stage, we expect the builders to be on site in approximately 4 weeks. Once I am provided with additional information regarding the construction of our new gymnasium I will write to all families. The other significant project we are undertaking is the construction of a new staff car park near the Early Learning Centre and oval, which should ease congestion at the front of the school. Work with this is progressing well and we hope for it to be completed before the other works commence.
2018 Enrolments I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2018 that we are taking enrolments now and that they are also closing rapidly as we only have a very small number of positions available. I strongly encourage you to ensure you return your child’s enrolment form to Jenny, Kylie or Julie in the main office as soon as possible. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au . School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

CURRICULUM CORNER
When you think of Curriculum, I bet you think of English, Maths, Science, History or Geography, you may consider STEAM or Digital Technologies, even Economics or the Arts. In Victoria, we are very fortunate to also have four additional Curriculum areas, called Capabilities that support our work as teachers, parents and the wider community as we develop insightful, engaged, deeply reflective and socially responsive young men and women. The Victorian Curriculum Capabilities are;
1. The Personal and Social Capability
2. The Creative and Critical Thinking Capability
3. The Intercultural Capability, and,
4. The Ethical Capability.
Today, I would like to explore the Personal and Social Capability more deeply for you. This Capability is essential enabling students to understand themselves and others, while learning to manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively. It involves students learning to;
recognise and regulate emotions
develop empathy for others
understand relationships
establish and build a framework for positive relationships
work effectively in teams
develop leadership skills
handle challenging situations constructively. The Personal and Social Capability supports students in becoming creative and confident individuals with a strong sense of self-worth, self-awareness and personal identity that enables them to better manage their emotional, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing, with a sense of hope and optimism about their lives and the future. On a social level, it helps students to form and maintain healthy relationships and prepares them for their potential life roles as family, community and workforce members. It encompasses students' personal/emotional and social/relational dispositions, intelligences, and sensibilities. Although it is named ‘Personal and Social Capability’, the words ‘personal/emotional’ and ‘social/relational’ are used interchangeably throughout the literature and within educational organisations. The term ‘Social and Emotional Learning’ is also often used, as an acronym (SEL).

“Long-term, we must . . . build our internal strengths. It isn't just
skills like computer technology. It's the old-fashioned basics of self-
reliance, self-motivation, self-reinforcement, self-discipline, self-
command.”
- Steven Pressfield
CURRICULUM CORNER
8th June 2017 Term 2, Issue 8
The Personal and Social Capability curriculum further elaborates Aims to target and develop
knowledge, understandings and skills, enabling students to:
recognise, understand and evaluate the expression of emotions
demonstrate an awareness of their personal qualities and the factors that contribute to resilience
develop empathy for and understanding of others and recognise the importance of supporting
diversity for a cohesive community
understand how relationships are developed and use interpersonal skills to establish and
maintain respectful relationships
work effectively in teams and develop strategies to manage challenging situations
constructively.
The Personal and Social Capability is explicitly taught from Foundation/Prep through their Primary
and Secondary Education until they reach Year 10. It is an area that we assess in on-going ways,
and you will find within the end of Semester report an indication of where your child is placed
against the standards we expect to see in students of the same age. Remember, in Victoria, the
expected standard is a “C” for achievement, indicating assessment criteria for your child’s age have
been successfully met.
Kindest Regards,

The “Kids’ Corner” section of our school newsletter provides the opportunity
for the children to showcase their talents or communicate something special
The Kids Corner section of this fortnight’s newsletter have been written by Vinu and Binadie (both in Year 6).
Binadie shared the introduction to a short story and Vinu a recount of the Mini- Mathematician program he is involved in.
The Perfect Horror Story Binadie
Waves of thought cascaded over me engulfing me with uneasiness and the sweet salty air of doubt. A mystery unravelling underneath my nose completely unaware of the danger lurking. Troubling thoughts hiding in the shadows, waiting to be found. All of which carry the same untold story. The beginning of the Perfect Horror story!
Mini Mathematicians Program (by Vinu, Year 6) I with three of my peers are lucky because we are involved in the Mini – Mathematician program at John Monash Science School. Our last session was about graph theory. Task 1: Navigate yourself around the tables and get to a certain island called Treasure Island. We had to travel on two ships which were red and blue. The answer relied on a diagram like a star with a square around it. Task 2: Create a sentence with random words like: a, big, the, old, friendly, monster, dog, clown, pirates, laughs, sang, the and danced. My sentence was: “A big pirate sang”. The task was dependent on my comprehension and a little bit of maths skills. Task 3: The seven bridges of Konigsberg, the learning intention was to try and navigate the seven bridges without crossing the same bridge twice. Answer: This task was found to be impossible because a 19th Century mathematician from Greece, said that it was an impossible maths question. We tried to solve it but could not - I guess it is impossible! The mini mathematician lesson inspired me and I learnt something new.
How to Check For Head Lice
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Head lice is a common occurrence of school life. As with most things, preventing nits and head lice is better than
having to treat them. Weekly checks during the school year are wise, and these simple steps make it easy to get
into a routine of checking for - and preventing - head lice.
Step 1 Coat on to dry, brushed (detangled) hair, inexpensive hair conditioner. Ensure the hair is coated from the
scalp to the tip.
Step 2 Divide the hair down the centre of the head and secure one side of the hair.
Step 3 Starting from the base of the neck, divide the loose hair into 3cm wide sections and comb through the hair
with a specialized nit comb from root to tip. Wipe the comb onto a paper towel or tissue and repeat, working your
way toward the front of the head.
Step 4 When you have finished the first side of the head, repeat step 3 on the other side.
Step 5 If lice or eggs are found, the child will need to be treated. If only hatched eggs are found, you may not have
to treat since the eggs could be from an old infection.
Head lice treatments are available at a variety of chemists and supermarkets and come with detailed instructions
for treatment. A second treatment is always necessary 7 days after the initial treatment.
Head lice can transfer from child to child when their hair is in close contact, such as whilst playing or engaging in
learning tasks. For this reason, the school policy is for long hair to be tied back and short hair to be held back with a
headband.
Department of Education states that students found with live lice will need to be excluded from school until the day
after treatment has commenced.
Kind Regards,
Judy Dalton
