PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Members of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community,

Wow, isn’t it amazing to think that we have almost reached the end of Term 2 and the half

way mark of the year! As adults our world seems to travel at a rapid rate of knots and when

we sit back to reflect on the year thus far it really is amazing to not only think how fast it has

gone but what we have also accomplished.

As Principal of our marvellous school I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far

this year all of which would not have been possible without the support of our terrific staff,

marvellous parents and outstanding students. Some of our achievements include:

IT infrastructure – the implementation of interactive whiteboards across the school has been

terrific and something we achieved due to all families ensuring the school fees were settled.

(Nb. the interactive whiteboards for the new building have been ordered and we are waiting

for the builders to hand the building over before they can be installed. Other IT tasks

completed include purchasing of additional netbooks (notebook computers), iPads (hopefully

the balance of these will arrive shortly), classroom computers and also an upgrade of our

network – switches, hubs, wireless access points etc.

Our new building – considerable work has been completed on our new facility with the actual

building now complete except for a few minor internal issues which should be rectified in the

coming weeks. As everyone would be aware, we are now at the stage of completing the

external works which we are hoping will be finalised in the next 5 to 6 weeks and we still

have our fingers crossed that we can move in the week commencing August 8th!

External facilities – the Year 3 – 6 children have been busy selecting and designing their new

adventure playground. Although we are yet to receive an official date in which the current

playground will be removed and transplanted and when the new playground will be delivered

and set up. Hopefully I will be in a position to communicate this to everyone early next term.

Student achievement – our students (your children) continue to do us proud at all times. The

recent reports indicate just how well our children are progressing compared to state averages

and expectations. I am constantly thrilled and overwhelmed by the sheer enthusiasm and love

the children have for their education and learning and this is something I really cherish and

enjoy seeing on a daily basis. It has also been wonderful to see so many of our children

achieve success in and out of the classroom and also outside school hours as well.

I am also incredibly proud of the manner in which our student leaders undertake their roles and responsibilities. I

am constantly asked to attend meetings (which are instigated by the children) to discuss ways in which we can

improve our school. For instance the various School Captains liaise with me constantly.

I am also incredibly proud of the staff who work tirelessly to provide the best possible education for your

children. The staff at our school work in a very collaborative manner to ensure the children are provided with a

broad curriculum which is interesting, engaging and relevant. So far this year we have undertaken an enormous

amount of professional learning such as – Catering for the ESL Learner, Australian Curriculum, Level 2 First Aid,

Multiculturalism, Literacy, Numeracy and iPad familiarisation.

I am also very proud of our families. The manner in which you support the children in their learning is marvellous

and something you should be very proud of. What is clearly evident in our school is the passion everyone has for

education and this stems from what our families believe and contribute - thank you for doing so! Also thank you

to the families who are able to contribute throughout the school in such things as School Council, committees,

working bees, excursions, swimming, fundraising, school events such as the Cross Country day and in

classrooms. Without your support we could not have the school in which we do have!

As this is the final newsletter for the term, I would like to wish everyone a safe and relaxing two week break and I

look forward to catching up with everyone on Monday 18th July at 9 0’clock for the first assembly of Term 3.

Flags in the Corridor

Thank you to the numerous parents who have commented about the flags in the corridor which represent the

majority of countries in which our families originate from. Unfortunately we were unable to source the flags of

some countries however if you find that your country’s flag is not represented and are able to supply one please

let me know. The flags are there to acknowledge and respect the fact that we are a very multicultural school and it

is important that we all embrace this in everything we do throughout the school.

Chess Program

I am really pleased to report that our Chess program has been an enormous success so far this year. As we had a

very large number of students interested in the program, next semester we are hoping to implement both an after

school and lunchtime program. The notice for next semester was distributed recently and it would be wonderful if

they could all be returned as soon as possible so we can finalise arrangements.

Congratulations to the following students who were awarded a medal for their efforts this term for demonstrating

such values as dedication, willingness to contribute, skill development, fair play, listening attentively, playing the

game in the right spirit and manner and remembering to use the 3 golden rules of chess – control the centre,

advance your pieces and castle your king.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)

Additional Programs for Semester Two I am very proud to announce that we are in the process of finalising additional learning enrichment programs for the

children to access next semester. These include:

- The Writer’s Club working with author Mark Carthew

- 4 students in Years 5 and 6 participating in a Science program with the John Monash Science School

- A Hip Hop dance program

- A Chinese Drawing program with an artist

- A geology unit with our School Council President Mr. Paul Van Den Bergen and

- A Sri Lankan dance program.

All of the above will further compliment the vast array of enrichment programs already on offer at our school and I

am very confident that the children will thoroughly enjoy them!

School Improvement Day

A sincere thank you to the numerous families who were able to attend and assist in the recent School Improvement

Day (Working Bee). On the day we completed numerous tasks such as trimming back trees and shrubs, mow the

lawns, whipper snip the area surrounding the back oval, sweep paths, clean drains and also set up the flags in the

school corridor. It really was wonderful to see so many families contributing towards our school, making new friends

and also having some fun. Thank you everyone!

Enrolments

I would like to remind families with children who will be beginning school in 2012, that we are taking enrolments

for the Prep Year and look forward to welcoming many new students to our school. It is important that this process is

completed during the next month or two, with all completed forms returned as soon as possible, allowing us to begin

planning for the 2012 school year. We also ask that members of our school community assist us by informing any of

their neighbours of the enrolment procedures and direct them to the office to collect an enrolment form or our school

website – www.glenps.vic.edu.au . School tours are available every Tuesday morning commencing at 9:30 and also

upon request. Please call the school on 9802 9938 to book a tour.

Parent/Teacher Interviews

Thank you everyone for attending last week’s parent/teacher interviews. I have received so many positive comments

about our school, the detailed student reports and how well the children are progressing.

Zone Cross Country

As reported in the previous newsletter Aaliya and Abigail (both Year 5 students) qualified for the Regional Cross

Country Championships which were held in Yarra Glen last Friday – please refer to Ms. Barnett’s report. We are

extremely proud of the girl’s achievements particularly when you consider the number of participants in each event

(approximately 120) and the fact that the Eastern Region is renowned for having the strongest athletics program

across the state. Well done Aaliya and Abigail, you should be really proud of yourselves as are your families and the

whole school!

Bendigo Bank Sponsorship and Support

Last week the students in Year 3 and 4 were provided

with the special opportunity to re-establish their garden

area with the very generous support of the local branch

of the Bendigo Bank. Branch manager Ashley and a

number of his staff were present to assist the children

to prepare the garden bed and plant a variety of new

plants which we were able to purchase as a result of the

bank’s very generous donation of $200. On behalf of

the staff and students, thank you to the Bendigo Bank

for their donation. For those families who may be

considering the use of a new bank or possibly changing

their banking provider, the Bendigo Bank is located at

75 – 77 Railway Parade Glen Waverley. Included is a

photograph of Ashley handing the donation cheque to

Mrs. Clugg, Izza and Rajat.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT (Cont’d)

Local Politician Visit

Last Wednesday Paul Van Den Bergen, Darren Mc Donald and I met with our local MP (Michael Gidley) and

Parliamentary Secretary for Education (Inga Peulich). The purpose of this meeting was for them to develop a

firsthand knowledge of our school and to discuss the Government’s policy on additional school maintenance funding

and their capital works program. At this stage the Government is yet to announce either policy, which is a little

disappointing, however we will keep the school community informed once these are released.

Year 5 Camp

By the time this newsletter reaches home 50 very weary Year 5 campers and 6 adults will be on their way home after

a very successful camp in Ballarat. The children had the opportunity to experience so many wonderful activities such

as night trails, canoeing, bush cooking, photo trail, rope course and also had the chance to explore Sovereign Hill and

learn about Australia’s history. We look forward to sharing their experiences early next term.

Tomorrow

A reminder that tomorrow we will present the Kiwanis and Principal Awards for the term at our final assembly

which will commence at 2 o’clock and the children will be dismissed at 2:30. After school care will commence at

2:30.

Jigsaw puzzle group

Since the beginning of the term Year 6 students Shashira, Sasindi, Bhakti,

Dilki and Nicky have been working on putting together some jigsaw

puzzles. They have already finished one on the Taj Mahal and are currently

completing one which is based on the City of Melbourne. We plan to have

numerous jigsaw puzzles completed which reflect the various countries in

which our families originate from.

Year 5 and 6 Projects

What a wonderful way it was to culminate a terrific term of learning when the Year 5 and 6 students presented their

projects to one another, staff members, parents and the other children in our school. It was an amazing and brilliant

celebration of learning which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It simply was fantastic to see the pride and joy in the

children’s faces as they showcased their learning! Congratulations to all of the children and teachers in Level 4 and

below are some photographs of the event.

were very creative and Ian for making huge improvements with his reading!

models of animals which were required to live in

at least 3 different habitats and Saksham for

being an outstanding tour guide with his family and some family friends who

visited from overseas

our environment which they learnt after studying the book The Lorax

created a 3D model of the main airport runway in Singapore complete with

control tower – well done!

Principal

Level 3 Garden Year 3 and 4 have been studying the Environment in term 2, we have been looking at native animals, plants and

the different types of environments. Students decided that the garden at the end of the Year 3 building need

to be replanted with Australian natives to encourage native birds back into the garden.

Bendigo Bank in Glen Waverley donated $200 dollars to our project to allow us to buy some plants and

fertilizers for our garden. They also came out and help move soil into the garden and plant the new plants.

Fulton and Oasis Garden Supplies also donated 2 cubic metres of soil for out garden. A big “Thank You!” to both

these companies, without your support we couldn’t have undertaken this fabulous activity!

We planted Bottle Brushes, Wattles, small creepers, native grasses and Banksias in our garden. We work from

11:30 till 1:30 on 16th of June, to finish this garden, and the students should be very proud of the work they did!

Here are some of the thoughts of Year 4 students on this project

The thing I enjoy when I planted the level 3 garden was getting dirty. Also I enjoyed planting lots of

native plants to encourage native birds into our garden - Lahiru 4AC.

I enjoyed putting in the blood and bone mixture into the garden and mixing it. Also I enjoyed digging

holes for all the plants that we bough plants - Kelvin 4LC

I enjoy watering the plant and digging the holes. It was great putting fertilizers into the soil to help

the plants grow -John4LC

I enjoyed planting our garden with the Bendigo bank helpers. They were a great help and did lots of

Skyping Across The World

On the 2nd of June at 7:30 in the morning, the Year 4LC and 4AC classroom was abuzz with over 45

children who had come to school early to ask questions of students in a school in Colorado, USA.

After we had a breakfast of cereal, fruit and some toast we were ready to start talking to the Year

5’s from Sage Canyon Elementary School. They had just finished studying a unit on the Environment

and we were keen to find out what their local environment was like. We wanted to compare the

weather, native animals and the different flora.

Here are some comments from our students on their International Skyping experience :-

I enjoyed Skyping with Sage Canyon Elementary school in Colorado because I learnt a lot

about them; they even had a pet guinea pig. – Minoli 4AC

The thing I learnt was that at Sage Canyon Elementary school some of them have never

seen a beach before, because they are in the middle of the USA. Bini 4LC

I learnt by talking about their native animals in America such as goats, foxes and buffalo.

I enjoyed having breakfast with Bini and then asking lots of questions with the other school.

It was a little scary talking to people we didn’t know, but it was lots of fun .Rajat4AC.

I learnt that they get to wear casual clothes to school. This is so different from our school

uniform. Their winter is colder than ours and they get lots of snow – Cassie 4LC

me and usually he doesn’t find me. My mum and I read exciting stories like Snow White and the

Seven Dwarfs or Cinderella. Also we cook together in the kitchen and I help my mum get food

from the fridge and cupboard. My mum sometimes picks me up from school and my dad drives

me to school. My baby sister and I talk to each other and we also play some different games and I

sing lovely songs to her.

The Lorax Activities By 3TJ

This term our class is learning about the environment and how to care for it. So last Wednesday we did some activities on a story called ‘The Lorax.’ ‘The Lorax’ is written by Dr Suess and it is a story about what can happen if we destroy the environment. One activity we did was to make a Truffula Tree, which had messages on the leaves telling people how to protect the environment. One message was to take care of the animals and not to cut down too many trees. We wrote on the leaves and cut them out, then Mrs Tomecek put them on the Truffula Tree trunk. A Truffula Tree has a yellow and black trunk and very soft leaves that come in different colours. The next activity we did was paint a storyboard based on six different parts of the Lorax story. On one side of our paintings we painted what happened in the story, and on the other side we painted what we could do to change it. For example, under the heading of ‘Use what you really need’ we painted a picture of the Once-ler using the Truffula Trees to make a Thneed (which they didn’t really need) on one side. On the other side we painted lots of Truffula Trees that were very healthy. By doing these activities we learnt to take care of our environment by making less pollution, only using what we really need and recycling our waste. So please join us in taking care of our environment!

Congratulations to two of our students, both in Year 5, who competed in the Eastern Metropolitan Region Cross Country Championships on Friday 24th June at Yarra Glen Racecourse. With over one hundred competitors in each of the girl’s races, we congratulate both Aailya and Abigail from 5MP on their marvellous achievement. Curriculum Update GWPS is entering an exciting new curriculum phase, where we are enriching our student learning, by

offering an opportunity for some students to explore a learning experience in more depth.

To give these students a further experience in a curriculum area where they excel we are

developing a range of ENRICHMENT and SPECIAL INTEREST groups. The programs created will

be tailored to the special talents of the students at Glen Waverley PS by our staff, parents and

outside professionals with expertise in those chosen areas.

During Term 2, the following 'in-school' ENRICHMENT programs are being offered: Band, Recorder

Band, Guitar Lessons, Chess, Game Competence (PE and Leadership), Jigsaw and Choir. Writer’s

Club which is a voluntary group of students who enjoy writing and are sharing their writing to the

wider community.

Further self-choice special interest groups will be offered in the future hopefully including Science

Investigations and Art. It is expected that over a longer period of time all students will participate

in an enrichment program as all our students have special talents.

The school looks forward and welcomes any parents who can assist us with their talents and skills to

contact me as I am certain the children would love to participate in additional enrichment programs.

myself or Mr. Catalano if you are able to assist.

Education Maintenance Allowance Forms are available at the School Office

EMA Payments The EMA payable for 2011 has been increased to an amount of $230 per eligible primary school student. It is paid in two instalments, the first for an amount of $161.00 (representing 70%) in March and the second for an amount of $69.00 (the remaining 30%) in August. Recipients receive 70 per cent of their portion in the first instalment, as this arrangement recognises that families incur the greatest part of the costs associated with educating their children at the start of the school year. Both instalments are made up of two payments each. One half as either a cheque payable to the applicant or a direct deposit payment into the applicant’s bank account, and the other half is paid directly to the school.

EMA Eligibility The Education Maintenance Allowance is paid to parents of eligible students under 16 years of age, and the student is enrolled a Government or non-Government School in Victoria on census day, 28 February 2011 for instalment 1 and 5 August 2011 for the second instalment. The Education Maintenance Allowance will be paid in two instalments and to be eligible you must, on the first day of 1st Term (1 February 2011) for the first instalment and on the first day of 3rd Term (18 July 2011) for the second instalment:

a. be an eligible beneficiary of a Centrelink pension, allowance or benefit within the meaning of the State

Concessions Act 2004, OR

b. be a Veteran Affairs Pensioner (TPI), OR

c. be a foster parent.

AND d. submit your application to the school by the date/s listed below.

Parents who receive a Carer Allowance (formerly known as Child Disability Allowance), Mobility Allowance, Remote Area Allowance or any other benefit not income tested by Centrelink are not eligible for the EMA unless they also comply with one of (a) (b) or (c) above.

The EMA key dates include the dates that parents or guardians must be receiving a benefit from Centrelink to be eligible - eligibility day; the day that any students applying for EMA must be enrolled by - census day; when parent applications must be received by schools and the deadline for schools to have entered all EMA applications into the EMA web system.

Parents Returning to Earning Community Access Grants $1000 Grants available for parents returning to the workforce

The Community Access Grants will support parents to return to work who:

Have been absent from education, training and/or the workforce for over two years while

caring for children; AND are one or more of the following:

Are sole parents; come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds particularly recently

arrived migrants; are young and have left school early to care for their children; are returning to the

Winter Wonderland at Phillip Island’s Churchill Island - We bring the snow to you! On July 5th, from 11.00am kids and adults will be able to revel in 10 tonnes of fresh snow at Phillip Island’s Churchill Island Heritage Farm. The freshly delivered snow, covering an area of 30 square metres, is part

of the Nature Parks’ Wild White Winter promotion. Kids and adults will be able to make snowmen, toss snowballs, make snow domes and even do

some cooking – including making delicious igloos using biscuits and marshmallow! Are your child’s motor skills up to scratch?

We are conducting a research study examining why some children have difficulty developing motor skills at

an age-appropriate level.

We are looking for children aged 8-12, who may not be developing motor skills as quickly as other children

their age, to participate in our research study.

What does participation involve?

Parents/ guardians will be asked to complete some questionnaires about their child’s motor development and developmental history.

Children will complete a motor skill assessment and some tasks where they are required to imagine movements.

Eligible children will undergo a MRI (magnetic resonance image) scan whilst imagining movements, to allow us to look at brain activity during these tasks.

After the assessment, we will provide you with a written report outlining your child’s performance on the motor skill assessment compared to other children their age.
