• Safe and effective antimicrobial therapies and how to select the most optimal antibiotic and antiseptic therapy for individual patients

• Effective and rational recall programs for periodontitispatients

• Highly effective, long-lasting and inexpensive means of combating bad breath and some types of tooth sensitivity (this part of the course is extremely valuable and the information is not being presented inother CE courses in the USA)

The course will present data from clinical scientific studiesand from own clinical case reports on antimicrobialperiodontal therapy. In a clinical demonstration, the courseparticipants will experience, in their own mouth, aninstantaneous benefit of effective antimicrobial therapy.

Upon completion of this course participantsshould know:

The recognition over the past three decades ofmicrobial specificity in periodontitis has affordeddental practitioners the ability to prevent and treatthe disease with a variety of antimicrobial drugs.These include systemic antibiotics, topicalantibiotics and topical antiseptics. Systemicantibiotic therapy can be essential in eliminatingpathogenic bacteria that invade gingival tissueand in helping control periodontal pathogensresiding in various domains of the mouth fromwhere they may translocate to periodontal sites.Frequently used periodontal combinationantibiotic therapies are metronidazole-amoxicillin(250-375 mg of each/three times daily/8 days)and metronidazole-ciprofloxacin (500 mg ofeach/twice daily/8days). Microbiological analysishelps determine the optimal antibiotic therapyand the effectiveness of treatment. Topicalantibiotics that are commercially available ascontrolled release devices suffer from severalpotential problems, including insufficientspectrum of antimicrobial activity in someperiodontal polymicrobial infections, risks ofproducing an antibiotic resistant microbiota, andhigh acquisition costs. In this course, Dr. Slotspresents a periodontal treatment protocol thatincludes a battery of professionally and patientadministered antimicrobial agents. Thesechemotherapeutics can provide effective, safe,practical and affordable means of controllingsubgingival colonization of periodontal pathogensand various types of periodontal disease.Treatment protocols and cases will be presented.

Synopsis

Jørgen Slots, DDS, DMD,PhD, MS, MBADr. Slots is Professor of Dentistryand Microbiology at the OstrowSchool of Dentistry of USC. Hegraduated from the Royal DentalCollege, Copenhagen, Denmark in1969. In 1976 he completed his

Postgraduate Education in Periodontology at the RoyalDental College in Copenhagen, and in 1977 obtained aCertificate in Microbiology from the Forsyth Dental Center,Boston, MA. He obtained a D.M.D. degree in 1987 and anM.B.A degree in 1989 from the University of Pennsylvania.Dr. Slots has served as Chair of the Dept. of OralMicrobiology at the University of Goteborg in Sweden(1982-1986), Chair of Periodontology at the Ostrow Schoolof Dentistry (1991-2001) and Associate Dean for Researchat the Ostrow School of Dentistry (1990-2000). Since 1991he has served as Head of the Oral Microbiology TestingLaboratory. He is a member of many national andinternational professional and scientific societies and wasawarded with numerous distinguished awards inperiodontology and dental research. He is the Editor-in-Chief of three leading dental journals: Oral Microbiologyand Immunology, Periodontology 2000 and Journal ofPeriodontal Research. He has published more than 300articles and textbook chapters in periodontology,implantology, microbiology, immunology and molecularbiology and has lectured extensively in the United Statesand around the world.
