Alaska Describe the events of 1867
• Secretary of State William H. Seward arranged for the purchase of Alaska from Russia for $7.2million (2 cents an acre)
• Called ‘Seward’s Folly’ (silliness) by those who thought it was a frozen wasteland, it was actually full of valuable resources:
– Thick forests, plentiful fish and wildlife, mild costal climates.
– Eventually, settlers would discover gold, copper, coal, and other minerals there.
• With such natural resources at stake, expansionists felt that the United States should gain control over other areas of the world as well.
• Seward also secured the rights to the Midway Islands located in the Pacific Ocean mid-way between California and Asia.

• Cuba gained its independence.
– But was governed by an American
– Platt Amendment – limited Cuba’s right to make treaties & allowed the U.S. to intervene in Cuban affairs. Until 1934.
• Puerto Rico came under U.S. rule.
– 1917 Jones Act gave Puerto Ricans U.S. citizenship
– Still a U.S. Commonwealth
• Philippines
– Spain had ‘surrendered’ for $20million from United States – naval & commercial (trade) value
– Rebel leader Emilio Aguinaldo started a guerilla war against U.S. forces.
–Deaths – 4,200 US; hundreds of thousands of Filipinos
– 1946 – granted full independence
When the United States invaded the Philippines to expel
Spain, Filipino fighters were willing to join the Americans
because they wanted independence from Spanish rule.
They eventually felt betrayed because the United States
bought the Philippines from Spain instead of allowing it to
become an independent nation.
