• End of February 2017: Joint investigation with FDA • At least 100 environmental samples were sent to FDA laboratory• 6 samples were taken and sent to NYSDAM Food Laboratory. Three samples positive.

• March 2017 • March 3: Firm issues recall of product (Ouleout cheese)

• Isolates PFGE patterns matched to clinical isolates (NYDAM Food Laboratory)• March 7: Nationwide recall of all product

• Isolates WGS matches sequence to ≤3 SNPs difference to those of the clinical isolates (NYDAM Food Laboratory)

Five of the eight ill people in the outbreak were New York residents. A Florida resident became sick after eating the cheese during a visit to New York. The outbreak involved one resident each in Connecticut and Vermont, and those were the two that died.

Figure. Evolutionary relationships of taxa The evolutionary history was inferred using the Neighbor-Joining method [1]. The optimal tree with the sum of branch length = 0.84351042 is shown. The percentage of replicate trees in which the associated taxa clustered together in the bootstrap test (500 replicates) are shown next to the branches [2]. The tree is drawn to scale, with branch lengths in the same units as those of the evolutionary distances used to infer the phylogenetic tree. The evolutionary distances were computed using the Maximum Composite Likelihood method [3] and are in the units of the number of base substitutions per site. The analysis involved 14 nucleotide sequences. All ambiguous positions were removed for each sequence pair. There were a total of 5 positions in the final dataset. Evolutionary analyses were conducted in MEGA X [4].

• October 2017: L. monocytogenes isolated from herbal jack raw cheese. One clinical PFGE match (FL)• Product was recalled and destroyed

• November 2017: NYSDAM Environmental swabs were collected but no L. monocytogenes was isolated

• January 2018: Public Health laboratories stopped uploading L. monocytogenes PFGE

• NYDOH notified NYSDAM of one clinical case of listeriosis. Per patient interview, potential food and retail establishment were determined as potential source of contamination.

• August 2018: NYSDAM collected food (5) and environmental samples (15) from a deli. L. monocytogenes was isolated from 1 food and 4 environmental samples.

Investigations involving Environmental Sampling• From February 2016 – October 2017

• Environmental and food sampling as part of investigation of Listeria monocytogenes in deli market.

• Swabs are collected from different zones.

• When positive samples are identified, Food Safety inspectors return to the establishment and request compliance of the “Listeria protocol”.

• Establishment removed/destroyed contaminated equipment.
