ANNUAL REPORT | 12016IMPACT

Dear Friends,

Our mission is simple: to make our community better. Every year, we measure our success by the impact we

have across Cape Cod: how many opportunities we created, how many collaborations we initiated, how many projects and programs we helped fund, and how many people benefitted from the opportunities and resources we helped provide.

We’ve been talking about impact since the Foundation’s beginning more than 25 years ago, and we’ll be talking about it for the next 25 years. This year, we decided to put it front and center on the cover of our Annual Report as a constant reminder that results matter—what we do here matters.

We also want you to know that we couldn’t do this without you: our funders, donors and supporters. Our annual report is as much a testament to your efforts as it is to ours. This is just a snapshot of the impact we’ve made in our community together this year.

• We invested nearly $3 million dollars back into the community to support education, arts and cultural experiences, health and human services, housing initiatives, environmental projects, and programs for children, youth, and families.

• Our funds grew to 305 and now represent $52 million in total assets.• In collaboration with eight funders, we brought Tufts University’s award-winning

Institute for Nonprofit Practice Pilot Program to the Cape. Sixteen local nonprofit leaders participated in this extensive training program designed to ensure organizational excellence and drive social change.

• We launched CONNECT Cape Cod. This dynamic online tool (connectcapecod.org) gives nonprofit leaders, government funders and other stakeholders a central access point to community resources and information and serves as a forum for issues that impact the quality of life on Cape Cod.

• We received re-accreditation from the Council on Foundation’s National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations®, the nation’s highest standard for philanthropic excellence.

The following pages highlight more of this year’s accomplishments—and the people behind them. Together, we are helping to ensure that our community has what it needs today… and in the future.

The Falmouth Fund (est. 2009), The Chatham Fund (est. 2011) and The Fund for Sandwich (est. 2015) are town funds of The Cape Cod Foundation designed to meet the unique needs of their respective communities. In 2016, The Falmouth Fund distributed $74,990; The Chatham Fund distributed $27,000. Both funds are beneficiaries of donations from community philanthropists who have committed at least $5,000 over five years, as well as other donors. During the fund’s first year, The Advisory Committee and Supporters for The Fund for Sandwich worked to build endowment resources.

The Cape Cod Foundation’s 2nd annual Non-Event was held during the summer of 2016. This fundraising campaign was an opportunity for donors to stay home, enjoy time with their family and friends and NOT have to attend another summer fundraising event. All proceeds raised from “ticket sales” directly supported the Foundation’s community and civic leadership efforts.

THE NON-EVENTIn addition to purchasing tickets and tables to NOT attend, donors were able to contribute to our 2016 Fund a Need, The Cape & Islands Partnership for Nonprofit Advancement. More than 400 local nonprofits responded to a survey and identified their training and capacity building needs and priorities for the Partnership. Based on the responses, contributions supported:

• Increasing awareness of LOCAL existing training and educational opportunities for nonprofits through coordinated communication

• Providing a forum for program providers to collaborate effectively by enhancing existing programming and reducing duplicate efforts

• Piloting an established, intensive nonprofit leadership training professional certificate program for new executives or executives in organizations that have recently experienced transition

• Enhancing partnerships among local funders to synchronize grantmaking processes and methods of evaluating funding impact.

From an investment standpoint, 2016 was yet another eventful year as the market continued its recovery from the 2009 low point. The economy showed significant progress with unemployment (finally)

reaching acceptable levels and economic activity generally in an expansionary mode. Against this backdrop, interest rates started to rise in the final quarter of the year, depressing most fixed income sectors, but a post-election rally brought the equity markets to new all-time highs. For the year, the performance of the endowment funds matched our benchmark, with the most notable out-performance occurring during the third quarter.

The outlook for 2017 is decidedly mixed as the economic recovery may be muted by the uncertainty surrounding various initiatives of the new administration. We foresee little change in our allocations, but will continue to build the relatively small alternative sector seeking the premium return generally accorded illiquid investments.

It is customary for me, on behalf of us all, to thank the members of your investment committee for their contributions during the year. Customary should not be considered routine, however – their thoughtful input is a significant contributor to our results. Thanks to all for their time and wise counsel.
