Last year Martha’s Vineyard squared off against the Nantucket Whalers. In many of the sports that are offered at the school, they have played, most notably in football. But last year the two island schools met on the ice for the first time ever. It was Nantucket’s first full varsity season in ice hockey and the two teams played two tightly contested games with the Vineyard winning the second game after tying the first game. While there is a natural rivalry because of the similarities between the two island schools, they don’t always play in every sport due to travel costs and competition. Martha’s Vineyard has close to 700 students while Nantucket High has less than 400 students. In football, the schools play regulary with the exception being the 2009 season when the Whalers were in a time of transition with their program. Also the inter-island ferries can be costly but Whalers AD Chris Maury seems willing to pay the price as the games in both football and hockey attract a big crowd. The Whaler hockey program is in its infancy but its already started walking. If things get better in time, this rivalry should be hotly contested on the ice
