TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
First Reading: Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1
God will inspire a new attitude among the people, linked
with mourning for “him whom they have pierced.” They
were cleansed of their sins by the figurative fountain.
Second Reading: Galatians 3:26-29 Baptized Christians have been adopted by God as their
heavenly Father. This adoption supersedes gender and
nationality as it incorporates the person into the Body of
Christ.
Gospel: Luke 9:18-24
Peter has seen enough of Jesus’ acts of saving people
from evil that he gives the correct answer to the question
of His identity. Jesus in turn demands His followers to
show steadfast loyalty each day.

TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Thoughts from the Second Floor Front
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 19, 2016 “Then he said to them, ‘But who do you say that I
am?’” (Luke 9:20)
Every disciple must provide a response to this question.
Your response cannot be merely from a cognitive level because
the answer to the question will involve not only your intellect
but will make demands of you in terms of your psychological,
social, physical emotional and spiritual growth and
development. Every answer you offer to the question has
necessary consequences.
The classic argument put forth by C. S. Lewis in his
work Mere Christianity addresses this question. He wrote that
one can decide that Jesus is either a liar, a lunatic or Lord. The
claims that he makes go beyond the extraordinary. Anyone
who would claim to be a king, act as a prophet, speak of his
own death and resurrection, make tremendous demands on his
followers must be a liar. No one person can make all those
claims. If you say that Jesus is a liar, if you deny the veracity of
his claims then that puts you beyond his influence. You have
decided not to engage him and are therefore left quiet alone.
What is the saying? No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus know
peace.
If you claim he is a lunatic, you must also deny him. He
is claiming to be something he is not. There are places that are
filled with people who claim to be something they are not. The
place used to be called asylums. It’s a good thing we don’t
know anyone who claims to be someone or something they are
not. Who would make such a boast? You and I both know it is
a regular occurrence.
The third response requires the most courage and the
most docility. To say that He is Lord means that we do take up
our cross daily. Notice He does not tell us to go out and look
for one. Pick it up, as if it is at your feet. It’s right there.
Step forward with the third answer. Jesus is Lord. With
that statement brace yourself, because he is going to come into
your life and lead you to do for others. He will help you look
beyond yourself and your concerns to a world where you can,
with his grace, not just make it a better place. A more civilized
society. With his Grace you can collaborate with Him to
fashion this world into His kingdom.
Faithfully,
Msgr. Diamond
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
Today we celebrate our dads.
Through the intercession of
St. Joseph, the foster father of
Jesus, we ask the Lord to
send a blessing on those who
act in a fatherly way. Realize
that your goodness is a sign of God’s Grace
working through you and for you we are
grateful.

All are invited to venerate the relics of two saints who exemplified courage and conviction in the face of persecution, St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher. They were prominent 16th century Englishmen who stood against King Henry VIII’s attempted supremacy over the Catholic Church, accepting martyrdom instead of abandoning their faith. It isn’t easy to stand up for your faith in the public square. Draw strength from those who already have! The sacred relics will be present at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia on Sat, June 25, 2016. The event begins at 4pm with a presentation on the relics, followed by Mass and veneration of the relics. For more information, visit archphila.org/mercy/calendar.
