Our congregational mission statement is, To make more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Why is that our mission statement? Because its the one Jesus gave to us (Matthew 28:19-20). Were the hands, feet, and mouth of God to the world around us. We demonstrate His love and we proclaim the forgiveness of Jesus Christ by grace through faith. To do that, we grow in our understanding of what we believe, teach, and confess as Christians. We get into the Word daily. We all carve out time for the things that are most important to us. So lets do that with our Bible and prayer life as well. Perhaps you have a devotional life already. Thats great! But if its something youve always had a tough time getting into, this is a great time to start. Aug/Sept is our third new yeareach year (if we start counting at Advent). We have Advent which is the churchs New Year, and then Jan which marks the New Year on the calendar, and then we have Aug/Sept which is New Year for school (I know school starts in mid-August...but youre reading this in September, so…). When we know what we believe we are more comfortable talking about and proclaiming the message of Jesus. Gods Word shows our need for a savior. Gods Word shows us our savior. Gods Word calls us to turn from our sins and turn to Jesus in repentance and faith. Gods Word is the thing thats always doing the work of saving, so we study it and delight in the Word like honey (Psalm 16, 19, 119...just to name a few). This community grows by proclaiming Jesus. This community finds its unity in the Word of God...in Jesus. And were made a part of this community by the Holy Spirit who calls, gathers, enlightens, and sets apartthe whole Christian church. When Christ is at the center we grow together. In an age of loneliness and isolation, this is where we find community and peace. There are various ways to get into Gods Word. For example, you can come to church and Bible studies. If you have to miss one day you can always find services on the church website. Also, Ive been streaming our Wed Morning Bible study on Facebook lately, so if you cant come to church on Wednesdays at 9:30 am, be sure to check in there. If youre not on Facebook, but want access to those videos Im working on getting the content available on the church website. You can also find Portals of Prayer in the narthex or family devotions at the website whatdoesthismean.org. You can even find reading plans and short orders of service in your hymnal to provide some structure to your life of prayer. However, you do it, get into the Word. Study about Jesus and how we live in light of the fact he has saved you. Jesus died, but He is risen again and lives and reigns to all eternity as your Lord and Savior. If you have questions of any sort, feel free to let me know. Blessings on your day!

From Our Administrative Pastor…

Wow! It’s hard to believe it’s that time already. Pastor Troup spends some time in his article talking about the switch, but I at least wanted to make reference to it here. Despite the shift taking place Sept 1, the truth of God’s Word and the mission of Immanuel remain the same! No matter what you face, you’re in Christ and so you’re not alone. Christ calls you out of isolation with yourself and calls you into the community of faith in Himself. Since that’s true, we should know how to build up this community of faith in order to encourage and strengthen one another.

Our congregational mission statement is, “To make more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Why is that our mission statement? Because it’s the one Jesus gave to us (Matthew 28:19-20). We’re the hands, feet, and mouth of God to the world around us. We demonstrate His love and we proclaim the forgiveness of Jesus Christ by grace through faith. To do that, we grow in our understanding of what we believe, teach, and confess as Christians. We get into the Word daily.

We all carve out time for the things that are most important to us. So let’s do that with our Bible and prayer life as well. Perhaps you have a devotional life already. That’s great! But if it’s something you’ve always had a tough time getting into, this is a great time to start.

Aug/Sept is our third “new year” each year (if we start counting at Advent). We have Advent which is the church’s New Year, and then Jan which marks the New Year on the calendar, and then we have Aug/Sept which is New Year for school (I know school starts in mid-August...but you’re reading this in September, so…). Since that’s the case, let’s get into the Word as a congregation. Let’s dig into the riches of the Gospel and come together as a community of believers around the Word of God which is living and active (Heb 4:12). When we know what we believe we are more comfortable talking about and

proclaiming the message of Jesus.

God’s Word shows our need for a savior. God’s Word shows us our savior. God’s Word calls us to turn from our sins and turn to Jesus in repentance and faith. God’s Word is the thing that’s always doing the work of saving, so we study it and delight in the Word like honey (Psalm 16, 19, 119...just to name a few).

This community grows by proclaiming Jesus. This community finds its unity in the Word of God...in Jesus. And we’re made a part of this community by the Holy Spirit who “calls, gathers, enlightens, and sets apart” the whole Christian church. When Christ is at the center we grow together. In an age of loneliness and isolation, this is where we find community and peace.

There are various ways to get into God’s Word. For example, you can come to church and Bible studies. If you have to miss one day you can always find services on the church website. Also, I’ve been streaming our Wed Morning Bible study on Facebook lately, so if you can’t come to church on Wednesdays at 9:30 am, be sure to check in there. If you’re not on Facebook, but want access to those videos I’m working on getting the content available on the church website.

Dear Brothers and Sisters of Immanuel, Well, it’s official! As of September 1, Pastor Demski is now Immanuel’s Administrative Pastor and I am Immanuel’s Associate Pastor. The decision for us to switch positions was made at the May Congregational Meeting and took effect on September 1 (my 62nd birthday). Although the switch may not be terribly noticeable at first glance, you will notice some tangible changes. Pastor Demski and I have switched offices in the church building (I’m sure Pastor Demski will forgive me if I accidently walk into his office. His office was my office for 23 years and it’s hard to break old habits). The masthead of the service folder, stationary and newsletter will be different. Pastor Demski’s newsletter article will be the first one in the newsletter. Right on page 1! The switch will also involve these changes: The preaching, teaching and calling duties of both

pastors will remain the same. The pastors share these responsibilities 50/50. However, Pastor Demski will be in charge of creating and coordinating the preaching schedule.

As Administrative Pastor, Pastor Demski will be in charge of coordinating the work of Immanuel’s staff and determining if junior catechumens are ready for confirmation.

While both pastors share the responsibility for maintaining the spiritual health and vitality of Immanuel, Pastor Demski will be primarily responsible for Immanuel’s well-being.

Both pastors will have voting privileges at Council Meetings and at district conventions, but cannot vote at the same time. Only one can vote. The pastors will determine which one will vote. Of course, as members of the congregation, both pastors can vote at the same time at Congregational Meetings.

Pastor Demski will work closely with the Board of Spiritual Ministry, the Board of Youth, the Board of Christian Education, the Board of Stewardship, and the Church Council. Pastor Troup will work closely with the Board of Social Ministry, the Board of Church Properties, the Board of Evangelism, the Board of Stewardship, the Church Council, and, to a lesser degree, the Board of Spiritual Ministry.

As you can see, some of the changes are clearly significant, but won’t alter the flow or vitality of our lives together under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Personally, giving up the reins of leadership is going to be a challenge. But I also believe that, with the aid and guidance of the Holy Spirit, these changes will edify and energize us. To God be the glory! Love in Christ,

From Our Associate Pastor…

A Note from Our Music Director...

September 4th marks the Start-up Date for... Immanubells, Adult Choir and Agape Ringers to begin practices for the 2019-20 Music Season. In my June news article, I suggested "thinking about" joining Immanuel's Music Ministry groups. If you are considering, and if you have any questions.... please feel free to contact me for Choirs and Agape Ringers (see contact info below) or Elden and Taryn Niemeyer for Immanubells (618.939.7982). And, if you have not checked out Immanuel's Music Ministry on the website, please take time to do so. There is quite a bit of information to be found about the various groups. Once you are on Immanuel's site, click on “Life at Immanuel” then click on “Serving” and finally “Music.” Music played and sung during our worship services is presented to give God all glory and praise! Serving Him,

School has begun this year with a new program. We are combining 3 to 5-year old students and allowing days to be more flexible. We have added 30 minutes of class time each day. These changes were made to encourage enrollment and to strengthen our presence in the community. Ms. Deborah and I have spent the summer researching positives of this program and ways to make it successful for both Immanuel and each of our students. Currently, we have 23 students enrolled at Immanuel Lutheran Preschool. The concrete has been poured and the fence has been completed on our playground. Unfortunately, we have had several incidents of vandalism. The Board of Education, with teacher agreement, has decided to lock the playground

and keep it for church and school use only. We will make an effort to unlock the playground on Sundays, before and after Sunday School. We are looking forward to a new an exciting school year. Keep our students and teachers in your prayers this school year.

God’s Blessings, Linda Polansky, Director

An Update from Our Missionary Partners

Funke News: To the Glory of God Alone This month a friend asked us to put together a video devotional for the Vacation Bible School at her church. The theme for the day was “To the Glory of God Alone,” and we immediately thought of the graduation of the Right to Live With Albinism program. During the graduation some of the women danced to the song, “I Know Who I Am" by Sinach. Through this song these women— women who have been teased, ostracized, threatened and abused because of their lack of melanin—boldly declared, “Take a look at me, I’m a wonder. It doesn’t matter what you see now. Can you see His glory? For I know who I am.” God’s glory shines through these women and through so many here in our corner of Tanzania. Today, during Bible study, one section stood out to me: Ephesians 3:20-21. Only when I started writing this newsletter did I realize how well it fit with the theme and that these verses are the continuation of last month’s theme verses. It served as a beautiful reminder to me that God is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” To God be the glory! Praising God in Mwanza Early in July we traveled to Mwanza for Michael’s appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist. Thankfully, Michael did really well, and the doctor was able to determine that he has allergies that have been impacting his vision. We thank God that after several weeks of eyedrops, his eyes are much improved, and there are no signs of other problems. While we were in Mwanza, we also took time to celebrate the 4th of July by eating hamburgers, pizza, and fries and taking our kids to the local waterpark. They had a blast! As we celebrated, we remembered how God has guided us on our kids’ journey to U.S. citizenship. Lord-willing, by this time next year, they will be U.S. citizens. Our School With June break over, Eric is back to teaching computer classes, typing exams, and holding science department meetings. This month Linda taught classes on Forgiveness and “4 Lies the World Tells Us” (including prosperity gospel) with the help of her co-teacher, Deaconess Esther. Linda also wrote out and translated with the help of friends her six-hour Sex and Relationships seminar. This year, Linda asked six teachers to lead all the topics so she could assist and make note of changes needed to the curriculum. The teachers did a phenomenal job! At the end of the seminar, the girls went with the female teachers to ask their questions and the boys went with male teachers. The open communication between students and teachers was wonderful and uplifting. We thank God that this yearly seminar can now continue even after we have returned to the U.S. We are also grateful for the curtains in the multipurpose hall that we were able to purchase a few months back. Those curtains allow students to see images from the projector with much greater ease. This month we also finally received over $1000 of new books for the library. Thank you to those who donated to the library while we were in the U.S. last fall! We continue to be amazed by how God is at work in this school. 5th Graduation of Right to Live With Albinism Program On July 10th, we celebrated with the 5th graduating class of the Right to Live with Albinism Program. We are so proud of the twelve women who graduated and the deaconesses who mentored and taught them. During the past four months, they learned how to make batik cloth, clothes, mats, baked goods, lotions, and soaps. They also learned how to start a business to sustain themselves and their families. A fundraiser was held during the graduation so that each woman will return to her community with her own sewing machine and start-up materials. Usually we donate money to purchase one sewing machine. However, thanks to generous donations we received during our furlough last year, this time we were able to contribute the money for three sewing machines! Thank you all! We pray that these new graduates will be able to live with security and dignity. The Next Generation of Missionaries to Tanzania Do you know any teachers (preschool, elementary, or high school), nurses, doctors, chaplains, social workers, DCEs, deaconesses, computer gurus, agricultural specialists, or childcare workers who might be interested in serving in Tanzania?
