Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017 The word novena is taken from “novem”, the Latin word for nine. A novena is made up of nine days of prayer and meditation usually to ask God for special prayer requests or petitions. Novenas are often used to ask specific saints to pray for us. The Saint Jude Novena, for example, is prayed to ask Saint Jude to intercede on behalf of a request that seems especially dire. Novenas are an ancient tradition that goes back to the days of the Apostles. Jesus told His disciples to pray together after His ascension into heaven, so they went to an upper room along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, (Acts 1:14) and joined constantly in prayer for nine days. These nine days of constant prayer by the Apostles at the direction of Jesus led up to Pentecost. This is when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples as “tongues of fire” (Acts 2:1-4). This pattern of 9 days of prayer is the basis of the novenas we pray today. Thus, the novena is an imitation of the Lord’s command to the Apostles when they prayed for 9 days in anticipation of the coming of the Holy Spirit. Novena to St. Jude To begin on October 19th for the next 9 days Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Intercede with God for me that He brings visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly - (make your request here) - and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 15, 2017

The word novena is taken from “novem”, the Latin word for nine. A novena is made up of nine days of prayer and meditation usually to ask God for special prayer requests or petitions. Novenas are often used to ask specific saints to pray for us. The Saint Jude Novena, for example, is prayed to ask Saint Jude to intercede on

behalf of a request that seems especially dire. Novenas are an ancient tradition that goes back to the days of the Apostles. Jesus told His disciples to

pray together after His ascension into heaven, so they went to an upper room along with the Blessed Virgin Mary, (Acts 1:14) and joined constantly in prayer for nine days. These nine days of constant prayer by the

Apostles at the direction of Jesus led up to Pentecost.

Jude

To begin on October 19th for the next 9 days

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of difficult cases, of things almost

despaired of, Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Intercede with God for me that He brings visible and speedy help where help

is almost despaired. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings,

particularly - (make your request here)

- and that I may praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor granted me by God and to always

honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen

Prayer May the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, and loved in all the tabernacles until the end of

time. Amen. May the most Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised and glorified now and forever. Amen

St. Jude pray for us and hear our prayers. Amen.

Blessed be the Sacred Heart of Jesus Blessed be St. Jude Thaddeus, in all the world and for all Eternity.

(Say this prayer, followed by the Our Father and the Hail Mary)

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

THE REAL PRESENCE

From the Principal by Penny Clemens

It’s Mega Raffle time again! Bishop Kelley students will be selling Mega Raffle tickets beginning this week.

The tickets are just $10 a piece. First Prize is $2000, Second is $1000, and Third is $500. You do not need to be present to win. The drawing will take place after the 9:30 Mass on November 5, 2017. In the coming weeks Bishop Kelley students will be selling after Masses. Tickets are also available in the school office. Thank you for your continued support. Friday, October 6th the Eighth Grade students led the school

in praying the Rosary as our First Friday Devotion and in

honor of the 100th Anniversary of Fatima. The third grade

class has been learning about the Rosary, made a Joyful

Mystery Book and made a Diorama of Mary. They are also

learning the prayer “Hail Holy Queen.” Each classroom is

doing a different devotion to Our Blessed Mother.

KNIGHTS CORNER

All are invited to congratulate Pete Lynch as he will be moving on to a new

chapter in his life. On Saturday, October 21, 2017, Mr. Peter Lynch will be ordained to the permanent deaconate of the Archdiocese of Detroit. As a way for us all to commend Pete, the Knights of Columbus will be hosting a reception after all Masses starting with the 9:30 am Mass next Sunday, October 22, 2017. They will provide coffee, cider and donuts in the Bishop Kelley Community Room. Please stop by to support Deacon Pete and Kathy Lynch for their sacrifices but most especially their tireless love for their Catholic faith. We wish them the best in their new assignment and as we let them know that our hearts will go with them. * We are also hoping our Brother Knights of Columbus will come by at 9:00am to help with the set up.

St. Margaret Mary, whose feast day is October 16, wrote: “All of my

affections turned towards the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, where I

sought my only delight and consolation of this Sacred Bread.”

St. Pope John Paul II wrote in Dominicae Cenae: “Jesus

waits for us in this Sacrament of Love. It is in this wondrous Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist that our

Lord, Savior and Redeemer mends, molds and fortifies us for the perilous journey of life. Through His awesome Presence, He speaks to our hearts and souls, transmitting His life-giving power and messages of love, hope and encouragement. It is in this most Divine manner that

He calms and reassures us.” “Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid!” (Mk.6:50)

Come and spend time with Jesus in our Adoration

chapel. Pour out your concerns, fears and anxieties to Him. He is your best friend!

After speaking at length with Maximin, Our Lady then turned

to Mélanie, speaking to her alone:

“What I shall tell you now will not always remain a secret. You

are allowed to publish it after the year 1858 (I find it interesting that

Our Lady should choose this year, as it is the year when she will appear

in the Lourdes Grotto to St. Bernadette Soubirous, could this have been

a foreshadowing of her upcoming appearance at the grotto?).

“The priests, ministers of my Son, the priests, by their wicked

lives, by their irreverence and their impiety in the celebration of the

holy mysteries, by their love of money, their love of honors and

pleasures, and the priests have become cesspools of impurity. Yes, the

priests are asking vengeance, and vengeance is hanging over their

heads. Woe to the priests and to those dedicated to God who by their

unfaithfulness and their wicked lives are crucifying my Son again! The

sins of those dedicated to God cry out towards Heaven and call for

vengeance, and now vengeance is at their door, for there is no one to

beg mercy and forgiveness for the people. There are no more generous

souls; there is no one left worthy of offering a stainless sacrifice to the

Eternal for the sake of the world.

“God will strike in an unprecedented way.

“Woe to the inhabitants of earth! God will exhaust His wrath

upon them and no one will be able to escape so many afflictions

together.

“The chiefs, the leaders of the people of God have neglected

prayer and penance, and the devil has bedimmed their intelligence.

They have become wandering stars which the old devil will drag along

with his tail to make them perish. God will allow the old serpent to

cause divisions among those who reign in every society and in every

family. Physical and moral agonies will be suffered. God will abandon

mankind to itself and will send punishments which will follow one after

the other for more than thirty-five years.

“The Society of men is on the eve of the most terrible scourges

and of gravest events. Mankind must expect to be ruled with an iron rod

and to drink from the chalice of the wrath of God.

“May the curate of my Son, Pope Pius IX never leave Rome

again after 1859; may he; however, be steadfast and noble, may he

fight with the weapons of faith and love. I will be at his side. May he be

on his guard against Napoleon: he is two-faced, and when he wishes to

make himself Pope as well as Emperor, God will soon draw back from

him. He is the master-mind who, always wanting to ascend further, will

fall on the sword he wished to use to force his people to be raised up.

To be continued…

GETTING TO KNOW…

OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE

By Mr. Christopher Sas, O.P.

LIVE THE LITURGY -

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Pope Francis constantly reminds us of the wideness of

God's mercy and its unconditional character. God is always patiently loving his children and opening the

doors to his heart. We must, however, freely choose to

accept God's invitation and join in the feast of his love.

We desire many things and we have restless hearts.

We often attempt to quench our desire with things that

are short-lived and shallow. All of us long to be satisfied and at peace. How do we announce to the

world, in ways that are convincing and without

judgment, that it is really God whom we seek?

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE

"My friend, how is it that you came in here without a

wedding garment?" Today's Gospel parable is

unsettling in several ways. The various images of

rejection, mistreatment, and violence paint an

unpleasant picture. Guests refuse to come to a feast,

servants are killed, troops are dispatched. The King

continues to try to fill his dinner hall, and then when

someone finally does show up, the King throws him

out for wearing the wrong clothes. What is going on

here?

The message would have been a poignant one for his

Jewish listeners. As the chosen people, they were the

first to receive the "invitation" to share in the kingdom

of God. But the chief priests and elders were

uninterested in accepting Jesus and his authority; thus

they didn't show up for the feast. But what about those

who did come? Something is expected of them as

well. Donning a "wedding garment" is like being

properly prepared to enter God's kingdom. Just

showing up isn't enough.

Here it's important to pay attention to the details. The

King first calls his poorly dressed guest "friend." The

approach begins with mercy and kindness. But the

man gives no defense for himself, and displays no

desire to change. It's as if he doesn't really care to be

there at all.

The question this raises for us is whether or not we are

"dressed" appropriately. We may hang around the

banquet hall--going to church, professing to be

Christian--but are we sincere guests of the King of

kings? Do we truly accept Christ's teachings and live

by them, or are we just showing up? The splendors of

the invitation Christ gives us should not be taken for

granted. We are called to share in a royal feast. May

we all be grateful guests.

Patron Against Cancer : SAINT PEREGRINE

O great St. Peregrine,

you have been called

"The Mighty," "The

Wonder-Worker,"

because of the numerous

miracles which you have

obtained from God for

those who have had recourse to you.

For so many years you bore in your

own flesh this cancerous disease that

who had recourse to the source of all

grace when the power of man could do

no more. You were favored with the

vision of Jesus coming down from His

Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of

God and Our Lady, the cure of the sick

whom we entrust to you. (Pause here

and silently recall the names of the sick

for whom you are praying) Aided in

this way by your powerful intercession,

we shall sing to God, now and for all

eternity, a song of gratitude for His

great goodness and mercy. Amen

If you wish to have your loved one put on the sick

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY

MOMENTS

Art Buchwald, the longtime humorist

for the “Washington Post” who died in

2007 is credited with saying, "The best

things in life aren't things." As

Christians, we know this statement to

be true. Certainly the best things in our

lives are not those items that money

can buy or things we can create in the

material world. Faith, hope, and love

are more precious than anything we

can see with our eyes. Yet, as humans

we often find ourselves longing for the

very things that we claim are not nearly

as valuable. We lose sight of what is

real and true.

Paul wrote in the fourth chapter of his

Letter to the Philippians that he has

experienced both living with

abundance and then with very little.

Regardless of what we have in terms of

worldly goods, Paul reminds us that

God provides for all our needs. God

may not provide for our wants, but he

does give us what we need.

The flesh seeks what it wants, but the

spirit seeks what it needs. In a

stewardship way of life, we must

always remind ourselves that true

wealth never comes from material

possessions and money. True wealth

comes from the love we share, the faith

we develop, and the hope we bring to

others. The best things in life aren't free,

though. They require work,

commitment, and fortitude. We need to

cultivate these things daily. If we are

serious about living life in this way, we

will find that when our days on this

earth are through, we really had it all.

WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC

TRADITIONS EXPLAINED

Question: Who is Ignatius of Antioch and what example does he

offer us in Christian living as we celebrate his feast day

on October 17?

Answer:

As Bishop of Antioch (the modern day city of

Antakya, Turkey), Ignatius witnessed to the faith

during the reign of Emperor Trajan, who ruled from 98

-117. Persecution of the Christians broke out in

Antioch, and Ignatius was captured and taken to Rome

for martyrdom in the arena.

On his journey to Rome over land and sea, Ignatius

writes seven letters to various churches. These letters

give powerful glimpses into the theology and practice

of the early church, along with insights into the role of

a bishop as pastoral leader. Ignatius is the first to use

the term "Catholic Church" to refer to the various

Christian communities of the Roman Empire. The best

known of his letters is the one he wrote to the Romans.

Ignatius addresses influential Christians who might be

tempted to intercede on his behalf, thus sparing him

from martyrdom. As Christ willingly offered himself

as witness to God's total love, Ignatius, too, desired to

be "food for the wild beasts," so that he could become

"the pure bread of Christ." Eucharistic living was so

crucial to Ignatius that he was willing to die in order to

model himself on the Lord who willingly offered all.

Sharing the Gospel

Imagine how it would feel to be invited by a king to come to his palace for a party! Well, you have been invited! God wants you to come. People who ignore God will not go to heaven. Don't

ignore God. Say "yes" to his invitation. Go to God's party in

heaven!

Prayer Thank you for inviting me to heaven, God. I

want to go!

Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself at a party in heaven

with God.

Mission for the Week As a family, plan a special party. Let each person make their favorite foods and play their favorite

music. Heaven will be even better!
