Reno-Tahoe This Week: New eateries – from sushi to 'twisted farm' May 15, 2011

Three new restaurants have opened in Reno-Tahoe casinos.

The Eldorado unveiled Sushi Sake in the patio area near Bistro Roxy and the Fountain of Fortune. The

restaurant features exotic types of sake, plus all-you-can-eat sushi ($19.95 lunch, $26.95 dinner).

The menu for a la carte dining is extensive, with appetizers such as miso soup, Kumamoto oysters,

agedashe and tomago and caviar. There are 23 nigiri choices, including tuna, salmon, king crab and sweet

shrimp, and more than 20 rolls with specialties such as the Maine lobster roll and the caviar roll.

(Given radiation problems in Japan, some diners worry about where seafood is sourced. An Eldorado

spokeswoman said that Sushi Sake's seafood comes from Northern California.)

In a sign of the times: Instead of stand-up card displays promoting other attractions in the hotel- casino,

the bar is equipped with iPads with the Eldorado's new app.

Also at the Eldorado is Pho Mein, an Asian noodle and stir-fry kitchen on the main casino floor near the

entrance at Fourth and Sierra streets. Specialties there include Chinese five-spice duck, house chow fun

and papaya salad. Pad Thai, 17 pho choices and sushi are also featured.

And Harrah's Reno is most pleased with the immediate reception of Hash House A Go Go, a replacement

for its Napa Coffee Shop. Coffee shops are ubiquitous in casinos and certainly serve their purpose, but

Hash House offers a menu not to be found elsewhere, calling it "twisted farm food," and the plates are

plentiful. Harrah's has long needed a destination dining spot, other than its legendary Steak House.

• Harrah's Reno has also opened "Piano Men: a Tribute to the Songs of Billy Joel and Elton John," playing

in Sammy's Showroom through June 26 at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays; 219 N. Center St.; $25,

$29; (800) 427-7247 or harrahsreno.com.

• In other dining news, the Ciera Steak + Chophouse, at the MontBleu Lake Tahoe, has been designated a

AAA Four Diamond Restaurant for the fourth year running, and this year the only Lake Tahoe

establishment so honored.

Spotted-wing grasshoppers and other insects may be strange encounters in an art museum, but not if the

work of Donald Farnsworth is being featured.

Nature, after all, provides some of the most spectacular art of all. It is on display with "Specimens," which

has opened at the Nevada Museum of Art for exhibition through Aug. 28.

Farnsworth is a contemporary printmaker and collector of strange and beautiful insects. He is also a

digital- technology enthusiast and creates digital software to bring shadow and depth to his work.

That work uses specimens from his own collection, along with some from the California Academy of

Sciences in San Francisco, to create images he then overlays on printed pages of Charles Darwin's "On the

Origin of Species."

The result is designed to help argue that careful observation leads to major theories, such as that of

evolution.

(10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays, to 8 p.m. Thursdays at 160 West Liberty St.; $10 adults, $8

seniors/students; 775-320-3333.)

• Those who have always wanted to get behind the fence and past the gatehouse at Ranchharrah, the

longtime residence of casino founder William Harrah, have a rare chance Saturday, but it's pricy.

"Life Inspired" is a day of dining and fashion to benefit the Obesity Prevention Foundation. There's a

daylong schedule with multicourse meals from area chefs (including Truckee's Mike Estee), a tour of the

property, a fashion show and a speech by NBC's "Biggest Loser" winner Michelle Aguilar.

The full deal is $145 to $185; fashion show only, $15; obesitypreventionfoundation.org.

Life Inspired Event May 11, 2011

A year and a half ago, Melissa Huelsman was 180 pounds overweight. She wasn't heavy as a child, but started to gain weight in college. While working toward her PhD, things got out of control. She could no longer ride her horse. Her blood pressure was elevated. Her knees hurt so badly, she couldn't take the stairs. "And now everything is perfect so I couldn't be happier."

Melissa went to the Western Bariatric Institute and got the lap band procedure. A band restricts the amount of food allowed into her stomach. It helped her lose 150 pounds in a year and a half. "It's been amazing. I just feel so happy now. I love to go workout. I work out 5 times a week now I just love to wake up and go to school."

She's part of the Life Inspired event on May 21st at Rancharrah put on by the Obesity Prevention Foundation. Erin Wallace is with the organization. "Obesity Prevention Foundation is to bring awareness to childhood obesity and with families as a whole to educate them and teach them about healthy life changes."

VIP guests will get to tour the Harrah's mansion. While outside, celebrity chefs from Reno and Tahoe will prepare organic, sustainable and local farm foods on the golf course. And this is just the first half of the event. "During the day you can have a silent auction and some food and then at night you can party with the Romantics and see a fashion show done by the Western Bariatric models."

Models, like Melissa, who have not only changed their lives but have saved their lives by losing weight.

At Rancharrah, local food stars in fundraiser to fight childhood obesity May. 10, 2011

Restaurants have long been tricky territory for folks trying to eat healthier. Refills flow, butter finishes sauces and portions amply occupy the plate. But with Americans increasingly concerned about what they eat, not just at home but beyond, some restaurant chefs have become healthier eating allies. "We're more interested as a nation in health issues in the last 10 years, so it makes sense, in our restaurants, that we pay attention to the food choices people are making in their homes," said chef Mark Estee of Moody's Bistro & Lounge in Truckee and the new Campo scheduled to open in August in downtown Reno. As part of this commitment, Estee, chef Colin Smith of Roundabout Catering, and 10 other area chefs are

donating time, staff and ingredients to create healthier, three-course, local-ingredient menus for Life Inspired. The debut event is a fundraising lunch for the Obesity Prevention Foundation taking place May 21 on the great lawn at Rancharrah, the 147-acre Harrah family spread in south Reno. "We really wanted to take things into a richer meaning," said Erin Wallace of OPF, founded by Dr. Kent Sasse of Western Bariatric Institute to highlight and help slow the growing problem of childhood obesity. Having restaurant chefs make lunch using local, sustainable ingredients, Wallace said, "sends the message that you can still go out, stay within your food principles and have a great meal." Of course, part of the appeal of the lunch, Wallace acknowledged, is simply its setting. "Rancharrah brings that excitement -- the excitement of seeing the ranch, the beautiful property. What is inside those gates?"

Child scholarships

John and Holly Harrah, owners of the ranch, donated its use for the event. Diners will take to tables arranged on the great

lawn between 25,000-square-foot Harrah House to the west and ponds and stone outbuildings to the east. A ranch tour

precedes the meal; a talk by Michelle Aguilar, winner of season six of NBC's "The Biggest Loser," follows. Lunch proceeds

fund OPF's wellness scholarship for children 12 to 18.

New espresso bar, gelateria opensClose your eyes and imagine a delightful and diminutiveshop where locals and visitors mingle while imbibing onflavorful Italian homemade gelatos and coffee drinks. This is the dream that Elizabeth Fontaine has brought tolife with Where We Met Gelateria and Espresso Bar,Tahoma’s newest gathering place. While studying art inItaly, Fontaine fell in love with the country’s vibrantculture. After graduating from Westmont College, she

decided to team up with her grandparents and open Where We Met near the Tahoma post office andWestside Pizza.“Traveling invites acquaintances and friendships,” Fontaine explains. “You meet people everywhere yougo and relationships are formed. Where We Met is a place for people to create new friendships, as Idid while abroad.”And, admittedly a dish of luscious gelato and a shot of espresso can help fuel friendships quickly. Tothat end, each day Fontaine creates a selection of gelatos that range from chili chocolate and Tiramisuto pink grapefruit and Stracciatella. Fontaine helps out with the tricky flavor decision process byoffering lots of samples.“The gelato is special because it is made daily and the base is imported from Italy,” she says. “Theespresso in the shop is also imported from Italy. My aim is to try to make the shop as authentic aspossible.”For more information on the flavors of the day and specials, Like Where We Met on Facebook or call(530) 525-1731. Truckee-Tahoe chefs volunteer for obesity prevention

Moody's Mark Estee and North Tahoe Catering's Chris Banovich among group of chefs highlighting local, healthy food Special to the Sun Monday, April 25, 2011

RENO, Nev. — One part luxurious luncheon, one part chef‐led cooking demonstration and one part charitable fundraiser — the

recipe for the Obesity Prevention Foundation's “Life Inspired” event brings together some of the top chefs in the region to

showcase local food for a good cause.

The May 21 fundraiser at Rancharrah, the exclusive and storied Harrah estate, is the Reno‐based Obesity Prevention Foundation's

largest source of funding. The foundation fights childhood obesity through education and promotes healthy eating and exercise.

True to the foundation's mission, the “Life Inspired” luncheon will

promote healthy local, seasonal and fresh foods. Local farmers will

display their seasonal produce for guests to browse before the chefs

turn the farm‐fresh items into a three‐course meal served on the

grounds of the Bill Harrah's 147‐acre Reno estate. As the chefs cook

they will demonstrate the connection between local ingredients and

their fresh, healthy culinary creations.

Farmers from Nevada Grown, a Nevada farmers' cooperative, and

Whole Foods will provide the fresh ingredients for the luncheon.

Truckee-Tahoe chefs volunteer for obesity prevention Moody's Mark Estee and North Tahoe Catering's Chris Banovich among group of chefs highlighting local, healthy food Special to the Sun Monday, April 25, 2011

RENO, Nev. — One part luxurious luncheon, one part chef-led cooking demonstration and one part charitable fundraiser — the recipe for the Obesity Prevention Foundation's “Life Inspired” event brings together some of the top chefs in the region to showcase local food for a good cause. The May 21 fundraiser at Rancharrah, the exclusive and storied Harrah estate, is the Reno-based Obesity Prevention Foundation's largest source of funding. The foundation fights childhood obesity through education and promotes healthy eating and exercise. True to the foundation's mission, the “Life Inspired” luncheon will promote healthy local, seasonal and fresh foods. Local farmers will display their seasonal produce for guests to browse before the chefs turn the farm-fresh items into a three-course meal served on

the grounds of the Bill Harrah's 147-acre Reno estate. As the chefs cook they will demonstrate the connection between local ingredients and their fresh, healthy culinary creations. Farmers from Nevada Grown, a Nevada farmers' cooperative, and Whole Foods will provide the fresh ingredients for the luncheon. “The idea we are trying to reinforce is that local equals healthy,” said Mark Estee, owner of Moody's Bistro and Lounge in Truckee and the soon-to-be-opened Campo restaurant in downtown Reno, Nev. Some of the region's most respected and successful chefs will join Estee, including: Colin Smith, Roundabout Catering; Chris Christenson, Sup; Nancy Horn, Dish; Jose Adaimo, The Grill; Barbra Mills, Back of the House; Josh Polan, Men Weilding Fire; Jacob Gordon, Grill at Quail Corner; Scott Allen, Bistro 7; Clayton Slieff and Adam Jordon, Atlantis; Ciami, Wine and Cheeseboard; Chris Banovich, North Tahoe Catering Company. “Guests are going to be able to interact with the farmers and the chefs and learn the relationship between local food and local restaurants,” said Estee. Obesity Prevention Foundation promoting healthy eating Posted by admin in Food & Wine on April 22nd, 2011 | one response

One part luxurious luncheon, one part chef-led cooking demonstration, and one part charitable fundraiser — the recipe for the Obesity Prevention Foundation’s “Life Inspired” event brings together some of the top chefs in the region to showcase local food for a good cause.

The May 21 fundraiser at Rancharrah, the exclusive and storied Harrah estate, is the Reno-based Obesity Prevention Foundation’s largest source of funding. The foundation fights childhood obesity through education and promotes healthy eating and exercise.

True to the foundation’s mission, the “Life Inspired” luncheon will promote healthy local, seasonal and fresh foods. Farmers from Nevada Grown, a Nevada farmers’ cooperative, and Whole Foods will provide the fresh ingredients for the luncheon.

Harrah estate hosts benefit for Obesity Prevention Foundation April 5, 2011

By ThisIsReno

Worldclass culinary, speech by NBC’s Biggest Loser winner and live music all part of foundation fundraiser at Reno’s Rancharrah on Saturday, May 21

RENO, NEV. (March 25, 2011) — “Life Inspired,” an event of fine dining and elegant fashion hosted at one of the Reno’s most exclusive and storied estates on Saturday, May 21, will help the Obesity Prevention Foundation continue its mission to educate Northern Nevada children on battling the obesity epidemic from inactivity and poor eating habits.

Held at Reno’s legendary 150-acre Harrah estate, Rancharrah, the day-long schedule of events includes multi-course meals crafted by some of the region’s top chefs, a VIP tour of the property, a fashion show showcasing Western Bariatric Institute patients who have overcome obesity through weight-loss surgery, and an inspirational speech by NBC’s Biggest Loser winner Michelle Aguilar. Culinary demonstrations from regional chefs, VIP reception, farm and garden tours and live music will round at the “Life Inspired” event.

“We are proud to celebrate the successes of the Obesity Prevention Foundation — which are embodied in the life-transforming weight loss of some of our “Life Inspired” models — and build support toward the goal of a healthy future for Northern Nevada children,” said Dr. Kent Sasse, founder of the foundation. “We are honored that John Harrah opened up Rancharrah’s exclusive grounds for the event, and immensely pleased to have some of the region’s most celebrated chefs showcase nutritious, local foods at “Life Inspired.”

Mark Estee of Moody’s Bistro and Lounge, Executive Chef Reylon of Manzanita at The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, Barbara Mills of Back of the House Cooking School, and Jennifer Bushman of Culinary Media Group – to name a few – will all prepare delicious meals, perform cooking demonstrations and lead attendees on a tour of the estate’s garden and farm. The meals and cooking demonstrations will highlight local ingredients and meals that build healthy diets, which is a large component of the Obesity Prevention Foundation’s mission to combat obesity and weight gain.

The fundraiser is the single largest source of support for the Obesity Prevention Foundation, which advocates healthy living by adopting nourishing food choices and exercise for Northern Nevada youth.

Proceeds from “Life Inspired” will support Urban Roots Garden Classroom, whose kitchen cutting gardens will be used by the region’s schools to promote healthy local eating choices. The fundraiser will also support a foundation-sponsored Wellness Scholarship Program, a 12-week, medically supervised weight loss journey for a local child between the ages of 12 and 18. The scholarship winner will become the 2011 Youth Ambassador for the foundation, and will be introduced at future events.

Following the luncheon and speech by NBC’s Biggest Loser winner, Michelle Aguilar, attendees will be treated to a fashion show to celebrate models whose dedication and willpower has led to life-transforming weight loss. The show will also feature celebrity models, a VIP reception and live entertainment. Wendy Damonte of KTVN Channel 2 will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

The luncheon event begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21. The fashion show begins at 3 p.m. Tickets to the luncheon include admission to the fashion show. Fashion show only tickets are also available. To register click here.

iMetabolic  March 12, 2011 by Theresa Gould

We are on a health and nutrition kick again today. I know, nothing wrong with that. iMetabolic is a new meal replacement shake. The powder is gluten free, lactose free, soy free and made with natural sweeteners. It is low in calories as provides you with half your days vitamins in one shake. It also comes in a variety of different flavors. We received three small sample packs of iMetabolic in three different flavors: vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. 1 scoop equaled a meal replacement portion and a half scoop is considered a snack portion.

Sorry forgot to take a picture of the shakes when they were mixed up. They just look like cream, brown and pink colored water. If you do not stir it well it will clump. I just stirred the shakes with a straw. I am sure the blender would have eliminated clumps of powder but did not want to dirty a blender just for one itty bitty shake. It is recommended that you use ice cubes in the shakes, I only did this once, but found they did taste better chilled. However, they were not bad at all without ice cubes. Their flavor is very appealing and tasty, similar to a shake, but not the same by any means. A shake is thick and creamy, these are a watered down version and probably healthier for us.

Page 34: iMetabolic Media Placements

Do they really curb appetite or make up for a full meal? I don’t know about that. I cannot really vouch for that since I was not able to test them for a longer period of time. Nor can I claim they will help you lose weight. You just never know.

iMetabolic.com is offering a free sample pack of their five different flavors, same size as I received if you have an interest in trying this new weight loss tool. Here’s to your health and nutrition! (for the second time this week because I think I said that already in another post…)

Visit http://imetabolic.com/ for more information about their product line.
