Premier Inn game graphicsThe brief
Provide a background for a game to launch a promotion for Premier Inn. Keep the visual style sold into the client.
The challenge
Creation of a common look and feel from disparate source elements (mostly grabbed from the internet as examples by the creative responsible for the overall game).
The solution
Using blends, gradients and custom brushes, the background was created in the client's brand colours and was easily tweaked to respond to feedback.
The results
The game was so successful it crashed several servers. This was not ideal, but it did prove that our idea was intriguing to its target audience.

Dunlop tyre illustrationsThe brief
Create illustrations that can be used in online, offline and in sizes varying from thumbnail to poster.
The challenge
There was little reference material available, and the source given was low resolution and gave minimal detail.
The results
In essence, this was a lengthy tracing job! Learning about masking, gradient masks and blends allowed me to complete this with most of my sanity intact! It was a lesson in patience, saving regularly and naming layers sensibly. A style had to be created and adhered to.

Volvo stackable chairThe brief
The exemplar of a five-minute job created as a positional that was approved and ended up being used in the printed project.
The challenge
Minimal art direction and next to no time.
The solution
Quick internet search for sources > trace and modify to suit Volvo > gradients to add 3D.
The results
To my surprise this was approved on the first pass. Never underestimate the power of quick and dirty!.

alRoaring Twenties poster recreationThe brief
Learn how to recreate various stippling effects, and study how to create Twenties look.
The results
Successfully recreated look and feel; learned more about Illustrator and how to make it do what I want rather than what it wants! Quite apart from extending my skill set, it also made me appreciate that sometimes it is quicker to use traditional media to get traditional results!

alSkillshare course illustrationThe brief
As part of a course on Skillshare the end project was to create a geometric animal illustration.
The results
As horses are one of my favourite animals, I thought it would be interesting to see how I would reinterpret them according to this brief. The blue is a result of my internet research, where I stumbled across Bitossi, who were famous for their particular blue… And they once produced horses in this blue.
Taking my lead from the course meant reducing my initial sketches from their initial (automatic) complexity to the simplest shapes possible.
Once this was achieved I went into full play mode with the decoration!

alLearn how to use gradient meshThe brief
When Illustrator first introduced Gradient Mesh it was a source of wonder and awe. So I decided to learn about it as much as possible.
The results
It was a process of intense frustration as I failed repeatedly, but finally, after a lot of practise, I was happy that I understood and could use this capability.

alExtreme angles and cloudsThe brief
I wanted to see if I could quasi-realistically mimic the various textures such as clouds, water, metal and plastic.
The results
A;though I was pleased with the more realistic version, it was evident that a simplified version could have its place, were this a commercial project.
I'd love to take credit for the sea in the top version, but it was all auto-trace: another time-saver learned!
