The brand new Bowden Information and Sales Centre was opened to the public for the first time on Saturday, 24 March. Despite the early threat of rain clouds, the sun shone as brightly as the happy, painted faces of the children who enjoyed the celebrations.

The day was filled with exciting musical performances from local artists kiki.manic.escapade, Myles Mayo and Band, Brian Ruiz and the Adelaide Piano Busker, Peter Hacquoil.

Stunning belly dancers from the Cinnabar Red Dance Collective entertained, while the roving Cirkidz performing troupe amazed crowds with their circus skills.

Visitors also enjoyed wandering the various market stalls as local street artist, Seb Humphreys, painted an amazing mural throughout the day.

Free tasty treats were available all day, including mouth watering wood oven pizzas from the Pizza Round and authentic Italian ice cream from Gelato Bello. Cole Thomas Culinary Solutions offered a taste of things to come in advance of their new venture opening in Bowden (see opposite page).

Inside the Information and Sales Centre, visitors eagerly looked over the large scale model of the area and interacted with various exhibits on display.

Even if you missed out on the grand opening, the Information and Sales Centre is open every day from 10am – 4pm for you to discover the hidden delights of a life more interesting at Bowden.

If you were among the visitors to the grand opening of the Bowden Information and Sales Centre, you may have sampled some of the culinary delights of Cole Thomas. Soon you’ll be able to enjoy his delicious creations whenever you choose with the opening of ‘Plant 13’ in our very own Bowden.

Describing his new venture, Cole says it will be “a really relaxed place to come and enjoy a great coffee, a bite to eat or a glass of wine with friends.”

“There will be an all day menu and a restaurant menu which will combine both Australian and southern US influences, so guests can expect plenty of barbecued and smoked dishes and some truly authentic comfort food with clever touches.”

Plant 13 will be located on the corner of Park Terrace and Sixth Street adjacent to the Bowden Information and Sales Centre. With several dining areas planned, including a casual lounge and alfresco setting, you’ll be able to watch the chefs prepare meals and see the wonderful ‘living herb wall’ in use. There will also be a retail space to buy everyday items such as milk and freshly baked bread.

Plant 13 will be open from August 2012, 7am – 4pm daily and until 11pm for dinner on Thursday and Friday evenings. The evening trade will extend as Bowden grows.

An essential part of the Bowden project is to provide training and employment pathways for locals. Throughout the life of the project a range of opportunities will be made available for work experience placements, traineeships and apprenticeships under the Bowden Works Program.

In conjunction with local training organisations and agencies, the Works Program prepares candidates for industry by engaging them in work experience and offering further education opportunities. The Works Program is seeking to fill 24 work experience placements and 8 long-term employment placements within Bowden for general labourers and semi-skilled workers.

The Gibson Street Horticulture Project, in partnership with the Urban Renewal Authority, Maxima Group, Western Futures, DFEEST and the City of Charles Sturt, was a recent full-time initiative which ran for 6 weeks.

Successful participants gained a Certificate II in Horticulture – Landscaping and had the satisfaction of contributing to the beautification of their own local community.

When Adelaide artist and Director Brigid Noone first won the public tender to develop a creative hub at Bowden, she described her vision as “a dynamic, vibrant, accessible and multi-use art centre for creative individuals and the wider community.”

Brigid’s vision finally came to life with the official opening of the Fontanelle Gallery and Studios on Sunday, 1 April. The former electronics laboratory building at 26 Sixth Street, Bowden incorporates 21 artist studios and two dedicated spaces for installations and workshops, and offers fantastic support to individual local artists by providing studio, gallery space and a dark room at an affordable rate.

The evening of the official opening saw the gallery packed with guests eager to see not just the fabulous art on display, but also the creatively renovated warehouse premises. The inaugural exhibition entitled ‘Sensation Seekers’ featured work by the Fontanelle committee and studio members as well as other Adelaide-based artists.

Currently running is The Quest by Maarten Daudeij and Post Postmodernism by Jack Cross, 5 July until 3 August 2012. Bowden Bikes will be available from August

The benefits to the environment are obvious – fewer cars means less congestion and pollution.

One of the great things about Bowden’s close proximity and connectivity to the city is the ‘walkable’ nature of the new community. Yet we know there are times when a set of wheels might be useful. In keeping with Bowden’s sustainable ideals there are plans to introduce two new transport initiatives for residents: GoGet car share and Bowden Bikes.

GoGet would give Bowden residents access to economical, well-maintained vehicles without the hassles of owning a car. An easy ‘book when you need’ system is an ideal scheme for people who only need a car occasionally and it reduces the pressure on parking spaces in the area.

Bowden Bikes is a scheme run by Bowden with the assistance of Bike SA which offers FREE unlimited bike hire during the day. Helmets are provided as well as locks for more flexibility when you’re riding around. Cycling is a more interesting way to travel – it’s a ‘green’ and healthy alternative to driving and a hire point will be a great asset to the Bowden community (available from August).

First Release Developers ANNOUNCEDAnticipation was high as the very first parcels of land were made available to teams of builders and developers on 26 March, drawing a huge amount of interest from the industry.

The First Release includes four parcels of land on Sixth and Seventh Streets to be developed for 3-storey terraces and 3-storey apartments.

Renowned Sydney architect, Keith Cottier AM, Chairman of the DRP along with five top South Australian architects, helped select purchasers who could meet the high architectural standards of the Urban Design Guidelines as well as achieve a minimum 5 Star Green Star Design rating.

The response was fantastic, with a large number of quality proposals received and assessed by the Urban Renewal Authority and Bowden Design Review Panel (DRP).

Earlier in the day, students from Brompton Primary School participated in the junior version of `Spaceshaper’. Their input was later included as a case study at the Child and Youth Friendly Cities Forum held in partnership between the Urban Renewal Authority, the Council for the Care of Children, Department for Education and Child Development and the Integrated Design Commission.

The Gibson Street Reserve, located opposite the project site on Seventh Street, has received a $100,000 in commitment for redevelopment from the Bowden Project in partnership with the City of Charles Sturt.

There was a hive of activity when local students, residents, developers and design professionals joined in two workshops discussing the future of the Gibson Street Reserve.

The workshops supported by the City of Charles Sturt, engaged the community in trialling a tool called ‘Spaceshaper’. Developed in the UK, workshops are held to bring together those that use the reserve, developers and design professionals in the redevelopment of public spaces.

About 20 local residents including members of the Bowden Development Reference Group took part in the evening workshop. They were able to compare views and discuss use, access, safety and what’s important to the community as well as explore new ideas for improvement.

FA METhe writing was quite literally ‘on the wall’ at this year’s Fringe Festival when visitors were invited to interact with Bowden’s blackboard installation in the Garden of Unearthly Delights.

The six metre wide wall which asked people to write what they thought would make life more interesting, took on a life of its own as more and more people added their comments and playful chalk drawings.

It attracted people of all ages (even the ones too young to write actual words) and created quite a buzz at the festival.

The wall made its second public appearance at the opening of the Bowden Information and Sales Centre, where yet more bright ideas were chalked up.

Construction is well underway with Bowden’s first public park, located between Fifth and Sixth Streets behind the Information and Sales Centre.

It is one of many family friendly open spaces planned for Bowden and features a unique steel arbour as a focal point.

Edged by crepe myrtle trees, an open grassed area will feature in the space with BBQ facilities as well as table tennis tables. The park will be complete and open for you to enjoy by the end of July 2012.

Fifth Street will be the first of Bowden’s new shared streets showcasing the innovation and high quality that can be expected throughout the entire project’s streetscapes.

Shared streets embrace the concept of ‘community’ with residents sharing the way with vehicles and cyclists.

Flowering pear trees will be planted to complement the established peppercorn trees, enhancing the natural beauty along the streets.

The next stage of civil works to begin will include the large scale rollout of Sixth and Seventh Streets and the connecting section of Gibson Street.
