NंMD ATM 2020

INVITATION

About the INDIAN INSTITUTE OF METALS (IIM)

It is a great honour for The Indian Institute of Metals Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Dolvi and Goa Chapters together with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to organize the composite event consisting of the 58th National Metallurgists' Day (NMD) and the 74th Annual Technical Meeting (ATM) of IIM at IIT Bombay, Mumbai, Maharashtra from November 21 to 23, 2020. NMD-ATM is the annual mega event of IIM where metallurgists, and materials scientists and engineers from all over the world, across the Industry, Academia & Research spectrum, participate to share their knowledge and findings. An Introductory workshop on Statistical Machine Learning will be held on November 20th, 2020. We, the Organizing Committee, cordially invite you to join us at IIT Bombay, Mumbai for a unique learning, sharing andnetworking experience.

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) was formed in 1946 and has grown to have more than 55 chapters and 10,000 members from industry, R&D, academia and the Government across the country. The Insti-tute publishes Transactions of IIM with Springer Nature Publishers with an impact factor more than 1 and authorship spanning across various countries. The monthly house magazine IIM Metal News covers interesting articles on metallurgy, news from the chapters and reports on the trends in the busi-ness of metals and alloys. Professional develop-ment courses on metallurgy and materials engi-neering are planned to be offered in the near future.

The Brahma Prakash Memorial Quiz is conducted for high school children each year with heavy turnout. The Institute publishes technical books under its IIM Springer Nature Technical Books Series bringing the latest research and technical information from authors across the world. Various Chapters hold events of common interest and courses for the benefit of working professionals. The Ministry of Steel as well as the Institute have created a large number of awards recognising outstanding contributions in ferrous metallurgy, non-ferrous metallurgy, metal sciencesand environmental issues.

Introductory workshop on

Statistical Machine Learning.World economic forum estimates that due to techno-economic reasons, half of the Indian workforce would need re-skilling by 2022. The key technologies where the current and future talent demands are growing include machine learn-ing, artificial intelligence and the internet of everything. The last decade saw unprecedented advancements in the area of machine learning with deep learning algorithms. Applications of machine learning are now not just limited to the engineering sector but have touched every walk of life including linguistics, arts, social science, behav-ioral science, economics, legal science, political science, and medical science. Advent of advanced machine learning algorithms is arguably as big as the control of fire by early humans. In view of the changing technologies, a one-day introductory

workshop on Statistical Machine Learning has been organized. The workshop will provide a general overview of the current advances in the area of artificial intelligence and specific tutorial to apply someof the machine learning techniques using open-source libraries. Application of AI toMetal Processing, Manufacturing Process, Smart Metallurgical factory, Microstructure Modelling, etc. will be covered. At the end of the workshop, the participants are expected to have a general appreciation for the underlying technologies which make machine learning and basic skills to solve prob-lems of regression and classification using open source libraies.
