An imort ant lessonlearned on te us

Conventional wisdom has it that M BTA bus drivers are surly and in-competent, Lind that the buses themselves have all the ambience and at-mosphere of at hospital emergency room. Not surprisingly, conven-tional wisdom has it wrong.

Since I live off-campus ind am often at The Tech until late ait night,I've become a regulatr rider of the 1: I OaIm Number 64 Oak Square bus. There fire seven regulars who take the bus all1 the time, although you oc-calsionallv Find one or two randoms sittings in the back. It's . close-knitlittle conmmunitv in some ways. Everyone seems to know everyone else. Before pulling out, Al the driver will look around to see ifall theregulars fire on boatrd, someone almost always knows if one of thegrolp is just latte or won't be coming ait all.

For the first coup~le of' creeks. I'd get on, flash my palss and take thelast seat on the left just in front of the rear door. Thi~s put me .at thepterimieter of' the group: I didn't want to sit isolated in the back, and I

didn't really feel c~omfortable sitting with everyone else als I felt .Is if Iw Isn't Li palrt.

About three weeks ago, I left late to catch the bus. I ran to CentrallSqualre, but knew there was no Wily I wats going to make it. But ins I gotthere, I salw the bus. '"We were *waiting for you. ' Al e~xplulined ats I step-ped in.

Thilt did it: i * as accepted. I stit with everyone else in the front fourrows of seat s find Joined in the chatting. I know very little about the

foilks in the group, but there are a couple of things about some of themthat stick out in my mind:

-Milry is a strange old bird. I often see her waiting for the bus hud-dled in the corner of the bus stand munching on a whole Gino's pizza.I'm not sure if she does anything besides ride buses at night.

-Tony is ;a dock worker. Although he's about 60, his biceps are asbig around as my neck. When the season comes grounds he's goin~g to1111 I') (LIt CCIII Co 10 SOM C 01'i 1z I(MI -1 )'v , I Li C\lt

-I don't know what Mr. C does. I don't even know his name. Everynight he sits down, opens the papfer to the TV listings, and complainsabout the poor choice of late-night offerings. He then folds up thep-iper'l ;1}illk trul 'l;( Ig} i M] OL 1,.1-11IC's "O. \o\LIkl ()\\-

for two twenty-fives."Every once in it while, as I walk home from the bus stop, I feel as if

I'm livin~g in .1 column written by Globe writer Mike Barnicle. I havepralctically nothing in common with these people- they're all more01,111 t\I\ i ' r, old (1 1 ,% I a1ll. 'n ; 110iIL('l' 1];I,' ".Id t'\ '1)1 I,,HI12 . 0111C2C

course-I doubt if we'd say hello to each other in the street. Yet, forthat brief I 5-minute bus ride, we're all1 friends.

I did feel awkward, however. when I told them I went to school. Isort of evaded the question when asked where, pointing down Muss.,Xve. aind mumbling ''Oh, just down the street there.'' I don't know\vhv. but I ftelt embsarralssed about it.

But none of the group really cared. Mr. C nodded and went baick tohis TV listings, Malry just Said "thait's nice.'' I wanted to grab theirshoulders, shake themn. aind yell, "Hey. I go to MIT. Thalt makees me.sineirt. I'm different from you!"'

I'ml not sure where this attitude comes from. It has its roots in thesubtle ;lrrogalnce fostered by the environment of the Institute. "%/e arethe sillartest of the engineers- we can make anything work.'' Malny ofLIS Lat the IIIStitilte halve led sheltered lives, from the crearn of our highschools. to MIT, to the heist jobs. we're alwaslx surrounded by people of''our calliber."''

11' there's one ma' or gap in my educaltio~n it's been filled by whalt Ilealrned h\e ridino the Number 64 bus: people of' "our calliber'' alnyt theonly folkos uroulld.
