Like them, we, too, have known Jesus as the center of our lives, as our Lord, our teacher and our friend, and the thought of his going away from us leaves us paralyzed with fear. Like the disciples after the Lord’s ascension, we, too, have felt alone and confused in the face of the challenges of our lives and the evils of the world, and we have been tempted to lock ourselves away behind the closed doors of family or church. Like the disciples, we have been slow to believe all that Jesus has told us, especially that he would be with us until the end of the world, and that the Spirit whom he sends would strengthen us for every good work. Let us make of this last week of Easter our own novena for peace in the world. Although the days will be seven, not nine, we know that it is our devotion that pleases God, not the number of our prayers. Let us pray with all the disciples—even if we happen to find ourselves alone or apart. And let us pray not in fear and trembling, but in trusting hope. Dear friends in the Risen Lord,

Although it was a little easier to discern when the Lord’s Ascen-

sion was celebrated on Thursday, the nine days from Ascension to

Pentecost are the Church’s original novena (from the Latin for nine) and

the template for all subsequent novenas—nine days of prayer character-

ized by fervent perseverance, trust in Christ’s promises, and solidarity

with the whole community of faith.

The story of the disciples locked in the upper room is really our

story. Like them, we, too, have known Jesus as the center of our lives, as

our Lord, our teacher and our friend, and the thought of his going away

from us leaves us paralyzed with fear. Like the disciples after the Lord’s

ascension, we, too, have felt alone and confused in the face of the

challenges of our lives and the evils of the world, and we have been

tempted to lock ourselves away behind the closed doors of family or

church. Like the disciples, we have been slow to believe all that Jesus has

told us, especially that he would be with us until the end of the world, and that

the Spirit whom he sends would strengthen us for every good work.

Let us make of this last week of Easter our own novena for peace in the

world. Although the days will be seven, not nine, we know that it is our

devotion that pleases God, not the number of our prayers. Let us pray with all

the disciples—even if we happen to find ourselves alone or apart. And let us

pray not in fear and trembling, but in trusting hope. The Spirit, after all, has

already been given to us!

This weekend’s second collection is the

monthly appeal for our parish St. Vincent

de Paul Society.

Next weekend’s second collection will go

to our IHM Debt Reduction Fund.

Most of the people seeking help from St. Vincent DePaul need help in a hurry. In

many cases they have tried various ways to find the money to pay their bills, but des-

peration leads them to call for help, many times just days before an eviction or utility

cut off.

A recent situation with a single Mother in Decatur is a good example.

The lady has always been employed as a medical assistant, paying her bills and rais-

ing her daughter who will go to college next year. However, she lost her job about 5

weeks earlier due to a re-structuring at her place of employment. Since then, she has

been actively seeking a new job.

With her rent due in days, and notice of the beginning of eviction processing, she

turned to St. Vincent DePaul for help. Our two Vincentian case workers visited her in

her home. They learned all about her situation, listed out her income and expenses,

and said some prayers for her support.

Quick action was needed, as the landlord was two days from adding on late fees and

eviction processing fees totaling $300 more over and above her normal rent. Such

aggressive tactics by landlords are quite common.

Due to the urgency, the Vincentians decided to make a request above our normal

guidelines so this family can remain in their home without fear of eviction.

Thanks to our generous IHM parishioners, St. Vincent DePaul was able to keep the

family safely in their home.

If a parishioner needs help, they can call 678-892-6163.

Attention all new parishioners!

You are invited to the Newcomers Welcome

Reception on Saturday, May 21, 2016, in the

lower level of the church after the 4:00 p.m.

Vigil Mass. Please RSVP no later than

Wednesday, May 18!

registered with the parish, you will be receiv-

ing an evite. If you did not, or if you prefer not to RSVP electronically, please call

CONSECRATION TO JESUS THROUGH MARY May 2-June 3 Do you have a special devotion to Mary?

As we are called to turn towards Jesus Christ and enter into a deeper relation-

ship with Him, consider consecrating yourself to Jesus Christ through Mary.

The Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary by St. Louis-Marie de Monfort

involves a 33-day preparation period, which consists of daily readings and

prayers, and culminates with a prayer of consecration on a Marian feast day.

Both the preparation and the prayer of consecration can be done

individually. Here at IHM, a group of parishioners will begin the 33-day

devotion individually on May 2 and will get together as a group to do the prayer

of consecration on the feast day of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on June 4

after the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Come and join us!

If you have any questions regarding this devotion or if you would like to receive

a copy of the complete packet of readings and prayers, please contact Fr. Bill at

[email protected] or call 404-636-1418, ext. 242.

will be parked in the upper church parking lot

and Vincentians will be at the truck before

and after each mass accepting your donations.

IHM School is celebrating Screen-Free Week May 2-8, 2016.

This is an annual celebration when students read, play,

think, create, get active, and spend more time with family

and friends instead of watching TV, surfing the web, or

playing with apps and video games. It’s about taking a

break from digital entertainment. You can participate, and

still use devices for work or school. If screens of any kind

interfere with family time, you may want to rethink how and when you’re using them.

More information can be found at www.screenfree.org. Please join IHM School in having a great
