    FOREWORDDearParentsandStudents,Whileithasalwaysbeentheaimoftheschooltoprovidestudentswithanenvironmentinwhichtheycanlearneffectivelyandenthusiastically,wealsoencouragethemtochallengethemselvessothattheycancopewithasuitableamountofpressureandcompetitiveness.OurYear8studentsarenowapproachingtheendoftheirKeyStage3education.TopreparefortheirKey stage 4, students have to embark on a two-year course known as the International GeneralCertificateofSecondaryEducation (IGCSE), at theendofwhich theywill sit a seriesofexaminations.Throughoutthenexttwoyears,theyalsohavetocompleteanumberofcourseworkcomponents.Tobesuccessfulinthiscourse,theyhavetoworkconsistentlyhardthroughout.WeadoptCambridgeAssessmentInternationalEducationasourexaminationboard,whichisthelargestand the most established IGCSE provider in the world. In addition, the IGCSE is a subject-specificcurriculum. Thismeans that studentshave tochooseanumberof subjects to study indepth for thenext two years. The types and number of subjects offered are based on the rationale that studentsshould follow a fairly wide and balanced curriculum. This philosophy also ties in with the DiplomaProgrammeoftheInternationalBaccalaureate,whichstudentswillfollowafterthecompletionoftheirIGCSEcourse.This booklet serves to outline the subjects offered by the school and provide an overview of theexamination requirements.We hope that youwill find this booklet informative and, if you have anyqueries,pleasecontactoursubjectteachersortheschooladministrators.DrLAUSiu-LingHeadPrincipalPoLeungKukChoiKaiYauSchool

    INTRODUCTIONEachstudent’sIGCSEselectionwillcompriseanumberofcompulsorysubjects,andarangeofelectives(Optionalsubjects).Thereisalsoan“ExtraOption”availableinEnglishLiterature,however,thiswillonlybeofferedtothosepupilswhohaveshownoutstandingabilityinthesubjectandapassionforreading.Chinese, English, InternationalMathematics andGlobal Perspectiveswill beoffered as part of a coreprogrammeandarenotoptional.However,pupilswillbeenteredforeitherFirstLanguageorSecondLanguage English and Chinese based on their level of language proficiency. In addition, pupils mustchooseaminimumofatleastoneSciencesubjectandonefromtheIndividuals&Societiesfaculty.OptionalSubjectsIn addition to English, Chinese, Maths and Global Perspectives, which must be taken by all pupils,students must indicate their preferred optional subjects in each block of subject choices. Whenchoosingoptionsstudentsareremindedtoobservethefollowingrules:

    1. Wherepossible,studentswillbeentered for the6subjects theychooseonthereplyslip. Ifasubjectprovestobeunavailablethenthestudentwillautomaticallybeenteredfortheirback-upoption.

    2. StudentsmustchooseatleastoneSciencefromBiology,ChemistryandPhysics.3. Studentsmustchooseat least one subject fromBusinessStudies,Economics,Geographyand

    History.4. Forlinguisticallyablestudents,theymaybeofferedEnglishLiterature.Studentscannotchoose

    to take this options; however, they should indicate whether they would accept it if it wereoffered.

    5. Parents and students should note that the final choice of the subjects has tomeetwith theapproval of the school.Wherepossible, students should achieve at least anMgrade in theiroverall academic achievement in each subject they have chosen. When making the finaldecision,theschoolwilltakeintoconsiderationthestudent’sabilityandattitude.

    6. Subjectsmaynotruniftheyonlyattractasmallnumberofstudents,inwhichcasewewilltakethestudents’back-upchoice.

    ChangingSubjectsIt is normal for students to be unsure about some subjects, particularly those they have not studiedbefore. As such, it is possible to request a change to your subject choices after the form has beensubmitted.Anyrequestmust take the formofa letteroutlining thereasons for theproposedchangesignedby the parent/guardian. This should be handed to the IGCSECoordinator as soon as possible.However,pleasebearinmindthatsomesubjectsmaybecomefull,andchangingintoaclassmaynotbepossible.AftertheendofSeptemberstudentswillnolongerbeabletochangeintoasubject,however,ifa student is really strugglingwitha subject therewillbeopportunities todropsubjects later in thecourse.ExaminationFeesThe total costof a student’s IGCSEexaminationswill varydependingon thenumberof subjects theytakeandtheexchangerateatthetimeofpayment.

    IGCSE&IBDPAfter completing their IGCSEs studentswill complete the final stageof their educationwithCKY; theInternationalBaccalaureateDiplomaProgram(IBDP).ForthosewishingtogoontotertiaryeducationinHongKongorabroad,itisimportanttheymaketherightchoicesfortheirIBDP.AtIBDPstudentsareaskedtotakesixsubjects:threeatHigherLevel(HL)andthreeatStandardLevel(SL).ForprogressiontoIBDiploma,studentsareexpectedtoattainaminimumof3Bsand3CsintheirIGCSEswithadditionalrequirementsstatedbelow:

    i. a minimum of grade B in Cambridge IGCSE for all Higher Level subjects, exceptMathematics;

    ii. aminimumofGradeAinCambridgeIGCSEMathematicsforHigherLevelMathematics.iii. aminimumofgradeCinCambridgeIGCSEforallStandardLevelsubjects,exceptab

    initio;

    Studentswhodonotmeettheabovecourseselectionrequirementbutachievedaminimumof6CsfortheirchosenIBDPsubjectsintheirrespectiveCambridgeIGCSEgradesareadvisedtoopttofortheIBCertificates.Studentsmustchooseonesubjectfromeachofthefollowinggroups,exceptforGroup6,whichmaybereplacedwithanadditionalcoursefromgroups1to4.Studentsmayalsochoosetwolanguagesfromgroup1 insteadofchoosingone languagefromgroup1andone languagefromgroup2.Thesubjectsweexpect toofferare listedbelow,however,pleasenote thatour IBprogram is constantlygrowing,andbythetimeourcurrentY8studentsreachY11wehopetobeabletoofferanevengreaterrangeofsubjects.(1) Studies in Language & Literature English A Literature

    FIRSTLANGUAGEENGLISH(0500)AlthoughEnglishisacompulsorysubjectatCKY,therearedifferencesinthecoursesoffered,dependingoneachpupil’s competency inEnglish.Studentswillbeentered intoeitherCambridgeFirstLanguageEnglishIGCSE(Syllabuscode0500)orCambridgeEnglishAsASecondLanguageIGCSE(0510),basedontheirprogressinthesubjectthroughoutyears6-8.ThosestudentswhoareconfidentintheiruseoftheEnglish languagewill be entered for First Language andmay also be offered the option to enter forEnglishLiteratureIGCSE(seepage11).AllotherpupilswillbeenteredfortheSecondLanguageexam.BothFirstandSecondLanguagestudentswillalsocompleteaSpeakingandListeningcomponent,whichisseparatelyendorsed.If you would like to knowwhich IGCSE you are likely to be entered for, please consult your Englishteacher.FirstLanguageEnglishIGCSE(0500)TheFirstLanguageSyllabusisassessedonthreecomponents:

    StudentsselectedfortheEnglishFirstLanguageIGCSEareexpectedtoshowconsistentcompetencyintheiruseofEnglishineachofthethreemaincomponents.TheSyllabuswilldevelopstudents’ability tocommunicateaccurately,appropriatelyandeffectively inspeech and writing. Students will be encouraged to use relevant vocabulary, to employ correctgrammar,spellingandpunctuation,andtodisplayasenseofstyleandaudience.In addition, it will complement their other studies by developing general skills such as the ability toanalyse,synthesise,makeinferences,orderfactsandpresentopinions.Assessment:FirstLanguageEnglishisassessedthroughbothexaminationandcoursework.Examination LengthofExam WeightingReadingandWriting(unseen) 2hours 50%Coursework–threeessaysofbetween500and800wordseach 50%

    ENGLISHLITERATURE(0475)AtCKYEnglishLiteratureisanon-optionalcourseofferedtoYear8studentswhoachieveanSgradeinbothreadingandwritingintheirfinalEnglishreport.ThechosenpupilswillthenhavetheopportunitytostudybothEnglishLiteratureandEnglishFirstLanguagesimultaneously.StudentsarefreetoacceptorpassontheopportunitytotakepartinEnglishLiterature,butitisstronglyencouragedthatstudentstakethischancetoworkwithhighattainmentpupilsandamultitudeoftexts. Assessment:TheEnglishLiteraturecourseculminatesinthreeexaminations,onethatfocusesonproseand poetry studied in class (50%), one that focuses on a play covered in class (25%) and finally anunseenpassagepaper (25%).Studentswillbeprovidedwiththeproseelementsof thecoursebeforethesummerholidaysbutitisimportanttonotethatstayingfamiliarwitheachnewtextisvital.

    How difficult is it? The usual concern about the English Literature class is that there is more work,harder tasks or that it is taught at a quicker pace. None of these things are true. Almost withoutexception, studentswhoarechosen for theEnglishLiteratureclass scoreanAorA* for theirEnglishLiteraturegradeandatleastaBgradefortheirEnglishFirstLanguage,withthevastmajorityscoringanAorabove.Moreimportantly,LiteraturestudentsareconsistentlymorepreparedforthechallengeofEnglishAatIBLevel,whereasthosewhoelecttoonlytakeFirstLanguagefacealongerperiodoftimetoadapt.Waystoprepare:Aspreviouslystated,theshortstorieswillbemadeavailabletoallstudentsbeforethesummerand they areencouraged to read thesebefore their course getsunderway. In addition, theoverallabilitytocomprehendawidevarietyofliteratureismadefareasierifstudentshaveahabitofreadingforpleasureduringtheirtimeawayfromclass.Therethousandsofnovelsavailable insidethelibrary as well as their form room that will no doubt capture their interest and help enhance theirvocabularyandreadinglevel. If youhavebeenselectedbutarenot sureaboutwhetheryoushould take theLiteraturecoursefindsomeonefromtheEnglishDepartmentandwewilldoourbesttoansweryourquestions.

    INTERNATIONALMATHEMATICS(0607)ThisyearwefollowtheCambridgeIGCSEInternationalMathematicsSyllabus(0607).

    TheintroductionofCambridgeIGCSEInternationalMathematicsoffersschoolsevenmorechoicewhenitcomestoselectingamathematicscoursethatisrightfortheirstudents. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics has been designed forinternational schools that want their mathematics teaching to focus more oninvestigations andmodeling, andwhichbetter utilizes thepowerful technologyofgraphical calculators. The course integrateswellwith the approach to teaching ofmathematics in IBschools.Thecourse isdivided intoacore tier,andanextendedtier. The syllabus also introduces students to the history of mathematics and itsculturalsignificance.

    BIOLOGY(0610)Content: At CKY we offer our students a choice of Science curricula from Biology (0610), Chemistry(0620)andPhysics(0625).Sciencehaslongbeenviewedasanintegralpartofthecurriculumineducation,soeverystudentmusttakeatleastoneSciencesubjectatIGCSE.Inaddition,theywillbeabletoselectfromanycombinationof twoof the three subjects, or all three. For pupils that arenot surewhich Science theyprefer,wewouldencouragethemtotakeallthree.Those students considering continuing their study of Biology at IB Diploma level are stronglyrecommended to take IGCSE Biology and Chemistry to ensure that they have sufficient backgroundknowledgefortheadvancedstudyofMolecularBiology.Cambridge IGCSE Biology is accepted by universities and employers as proof of real ability andknowledge.Aswellasasubjectfocus,thebiologysyllabusenablesstudentsto:
