    2016 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

In 1946, in the wake of World War II, Max and Bee Krone had a vision for an organization that would come to be known as Idyllwild Arts: a place where art would bring diverse people together to make an impact on society. For over seventy

years now, Idyllwild Arts has served thousands of artists through our flagship Academy and Summer Programs.

We are so grateful to all of our wonderful volunteers and donors who help keep Idyllwild Arts thriving through donations of time, talent, and treasure. We truly couldn’t do all that we are able to do without the selflessness of each and every one of you.

This year brought the 23rd Annual Jazz in the Pines to the Idyllwild Arts Foundation. The whole town seemed to be strumming along for the weekend-long festival. Together with our massive group of over 300 volunteers made possible by the Associates of Idyllwild Arts, we brought jazz and artistry to over 1,000 music-lovers and raised over $60,000 for Idyllwild Arts.

The 70th Anniversary Celebration Student Showcase was truly one to remember. The entire Idyllwild Arts Academy student body was in attendance on April 16, 2016 for performances at the NOVO at LA Live. With over 900 guests in attendance, we grossed over $570,000 in support of our mission.

During this 70th year, Idyllwild Arts also saw the completion of the William M. Lowman Concert Hall. This stunning new structure truly provides a space for the students that is worthy of their talents. In conjunction with Alumni Weekend, the Grand Opening was held September 24, 2016 and brought together alumni, faculty, and current students to play an orchestral concert that I believe all attendees will remember for years to come. More on the concert hall can be found on page 10 of this report.

In the 2016-2017 school year we continue to explore the impact of creativity, spearhead the movement of 21st century learning, and bring every aspect of Idyllwild Arts Foundation together as we work to change lives through the transformative power of art.

Thank you for your partnership and support of the students who attend our Academy and Summer Programs. We look forward to another successful year and a future that knows no boundaries for our bright, curious, and talented young citizen artists.

2016 MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

For Idyllwild Arts Foundation, this past year was a celebration of our past with a keen focus on our future. This year marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of Idyllwild Arts and we celebrated with events throughout Southern

California designed to remind old friends and introduce new friends to the magic that takes place on the hill. These activities, however, were also an opportunity to shine a light on our future.

This year, under the leadership of our President, the Board of Governors approved a strategic plan for the Idyllwild Arts Foundation which includes our updated Mission Statement and Vision Statement. This process began in early 2015 which included an Internal Audit of faculty, staff, and members of both the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. This was followed by an External Audit of more than 100 community influencers, college and conservatory admissions directors, prospective families, and summer program participants. Finally, we heard from over 300 alumni who provided us valuable insight into their experience at Idyllwild Arts through a detailed questionnaire. Throughout the process, we learned how others view our strengths and opportunities for growth.

Using these comprehensive audits, we held a 3-day strategic planning retreat with 40 attendees representing members of the Board of Governors and Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty, staff, parents, and students. During this retreat, participants developed strategic goals for Idyllwild

Arts in various areas and brainstormed on the strategies and tactics that might help us achieve these goals.

In spring, the Board of Governors approved our Strategic Plan and its goals in six major areas:

    • Education Program• Governance• Revenue • Enrollment Management• Facilities and Plant• Marketing

With the Strategic Plan in place, the focus of our President and her Leadership Team is further developing and implementing the tactics and strategies that help us achieve our Vision Statement:

We recognize art as an essential solution to global challenges. Idyllwild Arts will be a thriving leader in 21st Century education, with a global network of support, providing access for a diverse population of artists. We will maintain a sustainable environment worthy of our mission, and an intellectual space worthy of our students.

On behalf of the Board of Governors of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation, we are proud of our 70-year history and excited about the future as we work together to…

    Jeff DvorakChair, Board of Governors

    WILLIAM M. LOWMAN CONCERT HALL

In March 2016, the William M. Lowman Concert Hall held its soft opening in the form of an Alumni Jazz Concert honoring Marshall Hawkins. Saturday, September 24, 2016 marked the Grand Opening of the space with nearly 300 in attendance and a completely packed house as alumni, faculty, and students came together to play a concert of classical music.

This new facility is transformative for our campus and our students by creating a campus center that bustles with music and activities. This new hall, with its world-class acoustics and performance stage 60% larger than any other campus venue, opens up exciting new opportunities for our students. This new space makes our campus worthy of the incredible talent of our students and faculty.

We are enormously grateful to our many loyal donors who made this hall possible. Your generosity turned our collective dream into a reality. We have long looked forward to this celebration of our amazing new Concert Hall, which propels us into our next 70 years and helps us change lives through the transformative power of art.
