The stated goals of the RESTOR-Hydro EU project (www.restor-hydro.eu),

financed by EACI, IEE, is to develop and set-up a database and the support to

use it. The aim of this work is to map the location and characteristics of historical

watermills, weirs and all kind of anthropic water obstacles that are currently

inoperative.

This paper describes the management of the underlying data and purposes

behind the RESTOR Hydro Mills Map Module.

The criteria are designed as an aide for the evaluation of historical sites: to

estimate decentralized power generation potential, relevancy for environmental

sites and an initial attempt to quantify the underutilized potential that currently

exists.

Approach for Romania

The purpose of the Mills Map is to upload over 1500 data points.

According to data provided by the “Romanian Waters” National

Administration was analysed the small accumulations lists for each water

catchment area of Romania.

The required minimum

data elements per site are:

GPS Coordinates

Historical Use

Restorable Condition

Power Availability

Methodology

To identify and mapping sites was used the method Internet Mapping,

Google Earth application and ArcGis topographic map.

The stream of the river can be easily located, by name, and explore up or

down a river and tributaries by clicking and dragging to pan through the map.

To estimate the Power Availability, the following formula is used:

P = 7 ˑ Q ˑ H [kW]

For the purposes of restoring a potential hydropower can be used:

Archimedes screw, very low head turbine and done using the classical

approach: with Vertical Kaplan turbines , Bulbs units or the siphon turbines.

All necessary disclaimers about data certainty and the actual availability of

power from a site should be included in any documentation.

Potential use is dependent on field measurements.

Set-up a database and the support to use and facilitating project

development.

Using the geographical coordinates of the sites, it was possible to map them

for quick visualization.

Repowering abandoned sites results in the generation of hydroelectric power

for local use and for injection to the electrical grid, increasing electricity

production from renewable sources.

Authors opinion about the project that this is the only really sustainable way

to further develop the hydropower potential – using the thousands of historic

sites of water use, as: water wheels, linen mills, sawmills, weirs.
