ICT in teachers’ work
Research co-operation between City of Tampere, Hypermedia Laboratory of University of Tampere, and
Microsoft
Project manager Heljä Franssila
ICT in Educating Cities – IAEC Thematic Network Meeting in Tampere 19.-20.5.2005
Research partnership• ternary, co-operative research efforts to
support and develop ICT practices in the schools in Tampere—university, technology providers and City
• funding from City, Microsoft and the Finnish Work Environment Fund
Recent research projects in Tampere• ”Teachers’ ICT usage and practices” -case study in
2004— teachers of eleven schools (primary, secondary and upper
secondary schools) under study
• research questions—what is current status of teachers’ ICT usage both in
personal use and pedagogical use?—which factors promote and hinder teachers’ ICT
utilisation?
• research methods— interviews and survey of teaching staff in eleven schools
Teachers’ ICT usage and practices –research results 2004• overall quality and quantity of both personal and pedagogical ICT
use rather moderate, but attitudes towards ICT rather positive— ICT not an everyday tool in the classroom and in every subject
teaching— limited personal experiences - limited personal use -> limited
classroom use— need for better availability of computers and information sources both
in the classrooms and home
• experienced support needs — concrete hands-on models, recipies and hints how to apply ICT in
particular subjects— colleagues most important source for ”good practices” – lack of time
and space for in-school collegial ICT practice development is a problem
What is Sampo –project?• in autumn 2004 two upper secondary schools
and Tampere service centre for the distance education move into a new school building -> Sampo central upper secondary school—excellent possibility to seed and cultivate new,
comprehensive ICT supported school practices and culture
• Sampo action research project - a response for planning and support needs related to the ICT change process in Sampo
• an action research project with a goal to —develop usable ICT working environment and —implement an ICT supported operations model
• operations model captures agreed and well-thought ways to use ICT in everyday work in school— internal and external communications— everyday information management and logistics— classroom and home-school interaction— group work and individual work
What is Sampo –project?
What is Sampo –project? continue…
• piloting of MS Learning Gateway and Share Point technologies as part of model—building of web-based, single sign-on school portal
integrating different ICT services and tools
• follow-up study of the development of school organisations’ ICT capabilities
• adapting participatory, user-centered IS development methods —new kind ternary co-operation between users,
technology providers and researchers – researchers as interpreters and intermediaries
Working methods of Sampo-project• grounding the development work - interviews with
different school actors • participatory scenario-building workshops with different
groups of school actors, researchers and technology providers— evaluating current work and teaching practices – finding
pros and cons— studying possibilities of affordable and relevant ICT tools— modelling and evaluating new ICT supported action flows
and expressing them as use cases— selecting, tailoring and integrating ICT tools into whole,
which implements use cases
Working methods of Sampo-project continue…
• building demo portal system and executing usability and acceptance tests with school staff
• survival training for the use of the system for every user in two stages
• after initial usage experiences in the real school settings starts subject-spesific ICT practice modelling
• wrapping and documenting the process into change model and ICT-supported operations model
Experiences about ternary research co-operation• requires commitment, time and effort from all
parties – not always easy to realise• finding shared concepts and language to speak
about technology affordances is a challenge • lots of communication and coordination
between research, technology provider and school needed – but also mutual learning all the time
Benefits for different stakeholders• schools and City:
—research provides think-tank and extra support for strategising and planning ICT issues
—building reproducable change and operations model for wider use
• technology provider: —learning new methods and practices to carry out
system development projects in educational sector
• university:—excellent possibility to develop and test new user
centred, comprehensive system development methods in real application settings
