Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s 2017 Maidstone conference, an event that I hope will inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT across the school curriculum.
Today’s conference will be led by Mikes Berry, ICT education expert and principal lecturer of computing education at the University of Roehampton.
Miles will be joined by primary and secondary practitioners working on ICT programmes, and by a leading executive from Apps for Good who will discuss how best to prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s workplace.
Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom. If you’ve seen Andy at conference before, don’t leave the room, his presentation today is full of new ideas.
If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put suppliers to the test and give you real insight into their product capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall, where you can explore products and services to support teaching and learning at your school.

Now computing is firmly established as a subject in many schools, there is a great opportunity for pupils to apply their newly acquired programming skills in the context of some of the other subjects they study. Ranging from Monte Carlo methods for estimating π, to composing music with Sonic Pi, Miles will present a quick tour of a few ways pupils can practice programming in meaningful contexts and deepen their knowledge and understanding of other disciplines.

Pobble makes writing ridiculously exciting! Teachers use the Pobble platform to find the best teaching resources, give pupils an audience for their work, and to assess writing. For pupils, the platform offers a unique opportunity to engage with their peers, and for parents, it provides a unique way to connect with their child’s learning journey.
The literacy platform was started in 2013, by a group teachers based in North Yorkshire, England. A true grassroots initiative, the founders aimed to inspire pupils by giving them an audience for their writing and to save teachers’ time preparing and assessing writing lessons. Before long, they were travelling throughout the UK visiting their partner schools and delivering Pobble into the classroom.
