ICSSR Sponsored National-Level Workshop On

Research Methodology and Data Analysis (June 12-21, 2017)

The ICSSR-Sponsored National-Level Workshop was organized during June 12-21, 2017 at the

Department. This is our 2nd ICSSR sponsored workshop in this Department and third in the

entire span of 15 years. We had collaborative programmes with EDII, SPSS South Asia and TIES

in past 15 years. We have received tremendous support from University officials and that is why

we have been able to successfully organize these training programmes. We are receiving good

support from research scholars, faculty and resource persons from different institutes.

This workshop was exclusively for those students who are pursuing their doctoral research. PhD

scholars from Mumbai University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Central University of Karnataka,

Central University of Hyderabad, Dr Harisinh Gour University, Bharathiar University, Mumbai

University and University of Rajasthan, over and above Kachchh University, Gujarat Vidyapeeth,

Ganpat University and Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. These scholars are pursuing their

doctoral studies in HRD, Management, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Goeography and

Population Studies.

In this one-week programme, the participants were given exposure to Indian Epistemology,

Writing a research proposal, doing review of literature, developing a questionnaire, issues in

quantitative research, introduction to qualitative research, case study research,

phenomenological research, content analysis (conceptual as well as using software). The

participants were given exposure to SPSS and R software packages. However, in order to use

SPSS, R or any other package, it is important to have strong foundations of statistical analysis.

Therefore, sessions on hypothesis testing, correlation and regression analysis, binary logistic

regression, cox-proportional regression, factor analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis

and structural equations modelling were also scheduled.

We received as many as 160 applications, online as well as offline from various Universities

across India, out of which 40 participants were shortlisted by a committee comprising of senior

faculty members. Thirty participants attended the programme.

Experts include: Dr Shubhda Joshi from Mumbai University, she explained the basic tenets of

Indian Epistemology and its relevance in social science research, Dr Kiran Desai from CSS took

sessions on writing a research proposal and doing case study research, Dr Kiran Pandya, our

course director, on doing Review of Literature, Dr Satyakam Joshi from CSS on Qualitative

approach to research and Dr Mahendra Chotalia from S P University and Dr N Nakkeeran from

Babasaheb Ambedkar University, Delhi on Content Analysis. Dr Vivek Belhekar from Mumbai

University and Dr Ashok Shahnubhogue and Dr Dharmesh Raykundaliya from S P University



dealt with advance topics in statistical analysis like Structural Equations Modelling, Cluster

Analysis, Discriminant Analysis, Cox-Regression Model etc. Dr Jignasu Yagnik from the

Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India discussed correlation and regression analysis;

and Dr Gagan Bihari Sahu from CSS took sessions on t-tests and ANOVA. Dr Prashant Joshi from

Uka Tarsadia University took sessions on statistical analysis and time-series analysis using R.

Our in-house resource persons, include: Dr Smruti Bulsari, Dr Jayesh Desai, Dr Gaurang Rami

and Dr Madhusudan Raj.

Reading NSSO data is a task. Understanding it, is a bigger task and then analyzing it is still a

bigger task. Dr Anjali Dash from Centre for Social Studies explained the use of NSSO data and

showed the process of extracting the NSSO data. ICSSR has made a data repository and is giving

access to do good quality research work. Dr Divyakant Vaghela from INFLIBNET took sessions on

access and use of ICSSR data repository.

The participants were given exercises on various topics of statistical analysis and they were

asked to solve those problems using SPSS. The participants were given exercises using Edmodo

– an online networking platform. The participants were given exposure to Edmodo even before

they arrived for the workshop. They were sent a registration request to join the Edmodo group

“ICSSR Workshop 2017” and all correspondence pertaining to the workshop was made on that.

Even after the workshop was over, the reference material shared by resource persons and the

photographs were shared on Edmodo.
