Configuration management is the specification of allowable as-designed asset assemblies (models) and as-maintained physical builds. It ensures that the actual physical build of an asset meets the requirements of an allowable configuration.
You use the IBM Maximo Asset Configuration Manager to manage the builds of such high-value, complex, and regulated assets as aircraft, submarines, missiles, and so on. IBM Maximo Asset Configuration Manager is a rules-based configuration management system. It is based on MIL-STD-1388-2B, a United States military standard that uses the Logistics Support Analysis Record (LSAR).
The Build Data Interpreter The Build Data Interpreter (BDI) is the centerpiece of the Asset Configuration Manager. The BDI provides comprehensive status derivation for aircraft and other configuration-managed assets. For example, the BDI checks the actual aircraft, position-by-position, to verify that its configuration rules are in compliance with its nominated configuration. The BDI reports the status of non-compliance assets through a dialog box in the Assets (CM) application. It also alerts users to problem assets through color-coded data in various applications.
As Of Dates Another major feature of the Asset Configuration Manager is its ability to display the structure of an asset as of a past date. This feature is in the Assets (CM) application. That application also displays maintenance, meter, installation, and removal history as of a past date.
Asset Configuration Manager Applications
The Asset Configuration Manager contains five new applications that are designed specifically for asset configuration management. Five additional enhanced, or cloned, Maximo applications include configuration manager-specific fields, features, and actions. The unmodified standard version of these applications remains in the product.
The following table provides a brief overview of the configuration-manager functions that you can perform in the new and cloned applications.

! Configuration Subtab
You use the Configuration subtab to enable and disable configuration rules for a build position in a variation. A hierarchy tree on the subtab displays all variations for which the build position is valid.
By default all the variations are selected, which means that the corresponding configuration rules are enabled for all variations. To disable the rules for a variation, you clear the check box that corresponds to that variation.
Depending on the type of configuration rule, this subtab might display CM items and serial numbers to which the rule applies. In that case, you can enable and disable rules at the CM item and serial number level.
Advanced Tab
You use the Advanced tab to define secondary configuration rules that depend on primary rules. A primary rule is a rule that you enable or disable on the subtabs of the Position Rules tab in the Models (CM) application.
